  1. As you add more WiFi devices you will get more collisions and degradation of the network. that and it's way harder to troubleshoot a wireless network than a wired one.

Plus, given the large size of media files, wired connections will always be noticeably much faster and fewer headaches.

Best to hard wire everything you can (TVs, Desktop computers, etc) to minimize the load on the wireless. Your network will thank you later :sjcool:

  3. HAHAHAHAHA! Now that is funny! My friends and I were doing our best to photobomb as many of the GoPros we could! (Sorry!) I've emailed that pic to a couple of them. I just won GoProBombing.

Also, I think you were maybe on the ridge left of bowl 1 behind us at one point, when I was trying to coax my wife off the cornice? Or maybe that was someone else. If it was you, sorry for holding you up!

Bombs away! And I remember that cornice run, you three dropping in - no worries - - I was waiting for you to go so I could knock the cornices off with someone below to appreciate the effect :omg:

    Killer day!

  4. Any Beta info on Niseko for Friday and Saturday? From the looks of the isobars on that approaching storm, it'll be hecka windy..

I'm taking a bus from Sapporo, arriving Niseko welcome center 11amish Friday. and riding Saturday, too.

Anyone interested in meeting up in Niseko Friday Noonish? I'm traveling with (intermediate) girlfriend and her (beginner) friend, but if the snow is too perfect, I want to be tempted to blast off for something steeper and deeper. Any suggestions for which lift / runs to head to?

And should I bring the skins and avy gear or will the Sidecountry be all closed off Fri and Sat after the big, windy mess blows in?

Anyone want to meet up for some deep runs in the trees, please PM me or post here..

    Cheers,

    -z

Ditch the chicks and get off the bus at Rusutsu and meet them in Hirafu that night. Repeat Saturday. :) :) :)

Actually, Pete is onto it, except they might like the groomers at Rusutsu too.

Yeah I reckon Friday could be pretty unpleasant with the wind, and associated lift closures and queues. Should improve from Saturday.

I might be hitting Teine on Monday, if you're going to be back in Sapporo by then.

Thanks for the replies. Been to Rusutsu and it was great. Teine on Monday sounds cool, too. For sure, NOT Niseko is good advise. and fortunately, the chicks are inter-sufficient, so ditchable, but only at the same resort..

However, I've already committed to the bus/Niseko, so looking for particular info on what part of the mountain to head to if, for example, the top is on wind-hold. And which gates are good and accessible in that case? Or tree areas inbounds that satisfy.. Lifts? Runs?, etc.

And what's the chances of my Chuo bus getting stuck/canceled? It's dumping in Sapporo now, and 18 more hours of this will do a number on the travel conditions..

  6. might be worth looking into getting amateur radio licenses. there are several Japanese manufacturers of amateur 2m and 440mhz radios that are cheap and would work reasonably well for BC and resort.

not sure how hard it is to get a jp license. sometimes it's easier to get it abroad and get a permit for use in a different country.

I have my US ham license and have used it for reciprocity when traveling overseas (once upon a time..)

  7. I second that radios are an amazing safety tool - especially on powder days.

in areas where lift accessible tree-wells are a hazard, first one down to the bottom of the lift gives a radio yell to the partner. often on a big, deep day, they are stuck somewhere and working their way out.

then the call is to wait or make another run instead of waiting. and if there's no answer, hop up the lift and retrace tracks down to look for them. super efficient way to crush max pow while looking out for your buds.

it's possible to have friends on a pow day - and much easier if you have radios, too ;)

  8. Thanks. I was on the edge of a roped area, very steep the other side. Taking a pic and bending over. Silly me, camera case was unzipped open and my 70-200mm lens falls out and rolls down under the roped area. I saw my expensive lens rolling down the cliff in slow motion. Lost my own balance in a bit of a panic. Very luckily it stopped and I managed to get back some balance. I was just about able to rescue it with my ski. But it was very close, I thought it was gone, and later I realised I could have been following it. Obviously nothing like what some people are discussing here, but I found myself in real panic mode and it took me a while to compose myself. I suppose it just remined me that I need to be more careful.

Could have used a bit of rope ;)

  9. The best rope for a rescue is the one you have -- versus the one you left at home/car, because it was to heavy/bulky to bother with 'today'.

I think I'd be interested most in something between paracord and 6mm climbing line.

Maybe paraglider line (core made of made of Dyneema/Spectra, etc.,) would be a good choice to carry? it's amazingly strong and light. 30m of that would weigh almost nothing. one drawback is it's not the best for tying in knots, since the sheath is separate from the core. some random 2.3mm Dyneema line I found is rated at 225 daN (roughly 225 kg linear tensile breaking strength from what i just read) and sells for around $1usd / meter.

maybe a 3mm dyneema/spectra high-strength line or 4mm nylon line would strike a good balance. thoughts?

and all in all, I think a longer, thinner line works out to be more useful than a shorter, thicker one. one scenario would be to take that 4mm-ish line, threading it under a victim's arms and torso and pulling them out with the other two ends held together (wrapped around the rescuer's back, etc. no knots and twice the load carrying of a single shorter length (which would also need to be knotted).

    some good info here:

Really appreciating all the useful, thoughtful sharing of info here. Thanks, all..

  10. Mag7! I need to thank you for berating me with my major failing as a human being for missing saturday. (ok, kidding) but really, it spured me on to make the run today and it was pretty amazing.

met up with some random boarders on the train/bus and they knew the way. kicked my ass, though.

fyi, dudes said it actually opened sunday at 2pm (sorry to break that news to you all) so, while it was plenty good today, 2pm yesterday was the fresh tracks time.

and now need to go to some party (no refunds!) more later - gotta go now!

    crap i'm tired!

  11. does anyone know - can i take a JR train to Teine station Monday a.m. and catch an easy shuttle bus to the Highlands?

    or hitchhike up the hill?

i might make an early run for it...

or, there is an express bus that leaves from Sapporo -- supposed to have a reservation, but what happens if i just show up at the bus stop without one? total freakout?

EDIT: looks like the train works. i'll be shooting for that!

  12. Ok, Mag- Sounds good.

And thanks for the discount tip. I'll look for someone there with a K-pass for that discount. Also realized my used Rusutsu ticket entitles a discount at Teine! -- you see that, Goziamaas?

I'm on splitboard, black pants, dark blue jacket, black helmet with GoPro on top. Give a shout!

    Happy trails!

Hey ZelZel, cool, might see you up there on Saturday. Not sure what time I'll be getting up there as the Mrs wants a lie in! There is a shuttle from Teine JR. You can get a discount on a day pass (which takes it to less than the price of a 5 hr pass) if you know someone who has a K-Pass. I would offer to help, but I already have a couple of friends lined up for our discounts this weekend, sorry! I think there is also some kind of Bus/Pass/Lunch deals floating around, but I've never used it.

I'm in a red jacket, yellow pants, fat skis. I'll PM you my cell details if you want to take a few runs together. Should be a decent group of us up there tomorrow.

If anything, Teine (Highland) is probably more exposed to the wind and elements than Kiroro and Kokusai as it's so close to the sea. The forecast is looking a little more mellow than it was, so unfortunately not as much snow is predicted, but at least the wind shouldn't be as strong.

  13. Teine is close by - how's the off-piste access there?

    -Cheers

I'm often up at Teine. (Had a great day up there last Saturday) There is alot of off piste, a series of bowls with only a little bit of walking and a traverse back into the ski area. And some fun tree runs within the ropes.

Will be up there again this weekend. (Although the weather on Saturday is looking a bit sketchy, the wind might shut down the main Summit Express chair.

Cool, thanks for the report! I'll likely check it out saturday with the girlfriend who's an intermediate boarder. please pm me with your email/phone if you want to ride together there. (my pm's not working yet..)

any discount lift tickets available? or other deals? and how to get there? is there a shuttle from the JR station? We're in Higashi right off the E-way if you're driving. :happyshades:

and between Tiene, Kiroro and Kokusai, are any of them better protected from the wind? i've only been to Kiroro and Kokusai.

    Thanks again!

    -cheers

  14. dude that sucks! f.w.i.w., i've got the blaze LT setup on my Mojo Rx.

i would think spark can help. I was going to have some things shipped from cali soon, if that helps. but that pin is so light they can probably ship it to you for nothing.

you might be able to drill out the piece you have left and re-attach the wire there. that and a rubberband like something to hold it in place.

also, checkout 2nd street used gear recycling stores. you won't find that pin, but you can at least pickup a board that will get you through until parts come.

and how the hell did that happen?? did the wire catch on something? the pins i have (fairly new - got them november), the wire is attached right at the bend, so that shouldn't happen.

is your pm working yet? send me your email addy.

Im suffering at the hands of my broken spark burner LT pin atm. I snapped it yesterday and cant get a replacement anywhere in Hokkaido.

1 hour of use and im out of business.
