  1. ssar - already got my checklist together! Although I don’t bother carrying my boarding gear with me as my insurance and BA pay for everything I need should they loose/delay my baggage – ended up getting completely new kit (jackets, pants, crash pads, goggles, gloves, the lot!) when they lost our stuff going to Mayrhoffen last year, although we did have to hire boards, but hey ho!!!

Thursday, we’ve got 10 days boarding and 3 days in Tokyo.

Only 1 week, 3 days and 19 hours til take off, woohooo!!

I would really like for this kind of behavior to become standard in western countries aswell..Ive been in stockholm for the last 2 months visitng family over x-mas and find it utterly amazing that people can't have the respect towards eachother to refrain from talking loudly on the phone, shouting and not just taking it easy and chilling out on the trains and subways..and this isn't just in sweden..

so,in the end again..you should REALLY REALLY and i cannot stress enough REALLY in beforehand tell them the customs and ways in japan , especially the part about respecting others and being quiet on public transport...or else you will just enhance the idea of the uneducated, brashfull and ignorant gaijin in japan and then you shouldnt be surprised if your treated differently razz
not to rant or put you down..just a hint wink

I'm fine with being quiet, I also intend to stay sober for the entire journey - others in my party think I'm just being OTT and think a lot of the customs I’ve mentioned (tattoos in onsens for example) are outdated. They seem to think the Japanese way has succumbed to the ways of the West….. They’re not even taking the cash over debit/credit card thing seriously!!

I have done a lot of reading on their customs & ways but, as I said, I keep beign told these things are outdated. You guys have first hand experience of Japan so I figured asking you was the best way to find out!

Thanks for all of your help on this thumbsup

Me and a few friends were talking and laughing on a train once - not particularly loudly, and some old guy came over saying "URUSAI" and "BE SILENT", he then went and pushed one of the girls in our party - an australian-chinese - presumably because he thought she was Japanese (he must've missed the actual Japanese girl with us!), and when we carried on talking (albeit a bit quieter) he came over again saying "BE SILENT" and pushed her again!
Obviously with the tough work culture here, people just want to relax on the train home and dont want to be disturbed.
On the other hand, your front room/living room/dining room/bedroom, between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm becomes an open forum for every salesman/ motorcylce gang member/ public service announcer/ far-right wing nationalist to air his or her views via loudspeaker vans/motorcycle engines/public information announcement systems throughout Japanese cities! Enjoy!
Oh, and dont stand your chopstics in your rice - even I cringed when someone did that at work the other day...

Oh dear. I dont think they'll like my lot very much then. They're loud, the laugh (a LOT), and a few will most likey be drunk. It's safe to say there will be some noise.....
  4. Hi guys

Thank you all very much for your replies!!!

I found out from Tabi that they actually have a Japanese style bath and it is privately rented out so we can all chill together covered up!! Yeay!!!!

I will be doing A LOT of reading up on Japanese customs, do’s and don’ts etc – the last thing I’d want to do is offend anyone!

    2 weeks, 2 days, 19 hours & 40 minutes til take off!!!!

  5. Ouch, that's harsh.

We're flying Aberdeen-London-Helsinki-Toky with BA who allow you to take a board bag on in addition to your allowance at no extra cost. However, they do a code share with Finair (Helsinki-Tokyo leg) who charge you 30 euros for your board bag! BA will have checked us right through to Tokyo, so we'll probably get away with the charge on our way out, not sure what will happen on our way back though!! Sounds like you guys have had a nightmare!

I think I'll print off BA & Finair's baggage allowances to save any problems!!

  6. Hello there folks, hope you're all well??

Only 2 weeks & 3 days until we leave for Japan, woohoo!!!!!!!!

Question for you guys though. A few of our party have tattoos, one of them almost covers his whole arm & shoulder, one of them is a girl, what's the scoop with hot tubs / onsens / communal bathing / massages (specifically sports massages)etc in Hakuba? Will my friends be admitted to any of these types of facility?

Also, just out of interest, our lodge (Tabi Tabi) has a hot tub, will us girlies be allowed to chill in it with the boys or will we be separated?

  7. Hey Gary, I did mean as ID, thank you. Not planning on driving while we're there, not like being in an English speaking country where the roads & maps make sense!!!!

Air & Womb have both been mentioned before, everyone going is really into their techno so that's our aim - find a decent Techno club!! I'll take your advice on the map thing, cheers for the heads up!

What time are the clubs open to? Are there all ngiht pubs?

  8. I had the same problem, I thought I'd be able to buy a Hakuba wide ticket but no! I've put 50,000 aside for passes, I’m there for 10 days but will have a day off to go see the Snow Monkeys, but I thought I’d be better to play it safe.

I actually have a document that I put together just the other day that lists prices for SANOSAKA, KASHIMAYARI, SUN ALPINA JOINT, GORYU, HAKUBA 47, HAPPO ONE and HAKUBA MINETAKA, which I can email to you if you like?

I found the sites for LAKE AOKI, IWATAKE & HAKUBA HIGHLAND SNOWPARK but they had no English info available so I couldn’t find the prices ïŒ

I also believe Otari Village is close to Hakuba Village, 10 mins by car (so they claim), this area includes TSUGAIKE KOGEN, HAKUBA NORIKURA & HAKUBA CORTINA KOKUSAI but I don’t have information on these areas yet but I plan on looking into it. Do any of you know what these areas are like??

For snow, it all depends on your gerth... I only wore my Burton AK Down jacket (20K/20mm) last year, with only a chesty bond t-shirt underneath. That was in -27 deg temps. I'm not skinny, but I wouldn't be called obese either, so having a little extra padding always helps.

In Tokyo at the time you are going the avg. temp would be about 4deg (others correct me of I'm wrong, I'm basing this on the same time last year), I wore a light/medium coat, but because we were walking around a lot, I found myself opening up the front to let some cold in.

Hey Sciclone. I'm not exactly fat, but I'm not exactly skinny either! I think all the info here has helped me decide though. I’ll take my puffa jacket (10k, 10mm) and my thinner jacket (also 10k, 10mm) and that should do. I’ll be warm and dry both in Hakuba and in Tokyo regardless of the temperature and, as you said, I can easily wear either jacket open if I get too warm.

Footwear I’m taking my snow boots for wearing in Hakuba and my Uggs for wearing in Tokyo.

Am I glad I asked?! Only going clubbing on the Friday night, would have been well scuppered if I’d gone out without ID! Ah well, passport it is, just have to make sure I don’t loose it. Cheers for the info though, much appreciated ïŠ

Photo ID??!!! I dont drive!! Wouldn't want to carry my passport with me either though - any suggestions?
  12. Hey Mamabear

Hehe, it's hard to tell what sex folks are on here huh?? Lol.

Snowjoggers are snow boots, mines are plain black, keep my feet dry and toasty smile I thought I could take my ugg's for something a little smarter but still cosy to wear but maybe I should take smater boots instead.

I'll have plenty midlayers with me, plenty. Dont like riding in my puffa at home, always end up boiling. Might be needed in Hakuba though?!

I guess I'll have to see how much I can cram into my rucksack and board bag!!

  13. Cheers TB. Might just take my puffa then. Dont want to be cold and it should all fit in my board bag so it shouldn't be too much bother. I'm not a getting dressed up kinda girl, when we're out at home it's just jeans, trainers, etc, not sure what the dress code in Tokyo will be though! I'm only plannig being out on the Friday in Tokyo though so dont really want to bring shoes etc just for that!

  14. Hey ho peeps, hope you're all well!!!!

I have a question for ya'll. I'm arriving in Japan on the 15th of Feb, travelling up to Hakuba and staying there til the 26th, then travelling back to Tokyo and staying until the 1st of March. I was wondering what to do on the jacket front? I’ve never been anywhere as cold as Japan (first time boarding out with Europe) and I need to travel as light as possible but not be cold! I’ll take my med weight board jacket to ride in, question is, do I take another med weight board jacket for nights or my heavy weight puffa jacket (which is far too hot to ride in in the UK, but it might not be so bad in when it’s minus 10?). I’m a cold chicken at the best of times. What do you guys take? Any input would be brilliant!!!

Also, I’m only taking SnowJoggers & Ugg boots – will I have any probs getting into clubs in Tokyo wearing jeans, boots & board jacket?

    Thank you!!!!

  15. Just in case anyone’s interested, Snowbombing in Mayrhofen is actually a week long music/boarding festival and it’s an absolute blast. First time I went it was glorious sunshine, some blokes were riding topless in shorts and the lasses were in bikini tops!!! Last year the weather wasn’t so great, visibility was poor at time, but man was the snow good, brilliant considering it was the first week in April actually.
