The Hanawa-sen is a JR East-operated line connecting Koma Station in Morioka (Iwate Prefecture) with Odate Station in Odata (Akita Prefecture). It is also known as the Towada-Hachimantai Shikisai Line.

The Iwate Ginga Tetsudo-sen (Iwate Galaxy Railway Line) is a privately-owned line connecting Morioka Station (Iwate Prefecture) with Metoki Station in Sannohe (Aomori Prefecture). It actually used to be part of the main Tohoku Honsen, separating from it in 2002 with the opening of the similarly routed Tohoku Shinkansen.

The route from Morioka Station to Appi Kogen Station is outlined on this page - a journey that involves both lines. All trains using the Hanawa line go through to Morioka using the Iwate Ginga Tetsudo-sen.
