Sugadaira by public transport

Sugadaira Kogen is a highland area in the northern region of Nagano Prefecture, to the south east of central Nagano City.

Sugadaira is a popular destination throughout the year with many sports training grounds and open spaces for the summer seasons. 

Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort comprises of three main areas - Davos, Taro and Pine Beak - which share a lift ticket. While they are not all connected physically, a shared ticket is available as well as a shuttle bus running between them. Minenohara Kogen is a seperate resort closeby in the same highland region.

Getting to the Sugadaira area by train

  Shinkansen bullet train:  

  Hokuriku Shinkansen 北陸新幹線
  Ueda Station 上田駅
  Local trains:  
  Shinano Tetsudo-sen 信濃鉄道線
  Bessho-sen 別称線

By far the most convenient way to get to Sugadaira by train is from Ueda Station, about 23km from the resort. Buses run by the private Ueda Bus company go up to the Sugadaira area directly from Ueda Station. There are about 10 services each day during winter season and it costs 500 yen one-way. The journey from Ueda Station to Sugadaira by bus takes about 40 minutes.

A taxi from Ueda Station to Sugadaira costs around 8000 yen and takes around 40 minutes.

A highway bus service is also available running between Ueda and Ikebukuro in Tokyo.

Note: that there are no bus services from Nagano Station to Sugadaira.

From Tokyo

The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo Station directly to Ueda Station. From Ueda Station take the bus to the Sugadaira area.

This journey is around 190km and usually takes about 90 minutes.

Local train lines

As well as the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train, there are two other local lines that use Ueda Station. The Shinano Tetsudo-sen line operates between Karuizawa Station and Shinonoi Station, and from there connecting with Nagano Station using a section of the Shinetsu Honsen main line. The short Bessho line operates between Ueda and Bessho Onsen and is run by the private Ueda Dentetsu (Ueda Electric Railway) company.
