Myoko Kogen Travel Guide - By public transport

Myoko by public transport

Myoko Kogen is the mountainous part of Myoko City with a number of resorts on the side of the beautiful Mt Myoko.

Myoko is in the southern region of Niigata Prefecture, surrounded on three sides by the border with Nagano Prefecture.

The region gets famously huge amounts of snowfall each season, but Myoko is a popular onsen and nature resort all year round as well.

What is Myoko?

The word 'Myoko' is used a lot and can be a source of confusion, so in an effort to make it as clear as possible:

Mt Myoko is the name of the beautiful mountain in the above photograph.
Myoko Kogen
was the name of a town that existed until 2005.
Myoko-mura was the name of a village that existed until 2005.
In 2005, Myoko Kogen and Myoko-mura, along with Arai City, were brought together to form the new Myoko-shi (Myoko City).
Most people now refer to the ski resort area as 'Myoko Kogen', or just simply 'Myoko'.

Most people travelling to the resorts in Myoko by train take the Hokuriku Shinkansen (formerly known as the Nagano Shinkansen) to Nagano Station and then transfer to the Kita Shinano-sen line and get off at Myoko Kogen Station.

Shuttle Buses around Myoko

In winter, fairly regular local public buses (charged) operate from Myoko Kogen station via Shin Akakura to Akakura Onsen, as well as to Suginohara via Ikenotaira. There is also a taxi rank - but sometimes somewhat of a shortage of actual taxis!

If you are staying in Myoko, your hotel/accommodation may well be able to arrange to pick you up from the station and so it is recommended that you enquire about that.

Specific details for the 2015-2016 season will be added as they become available.

Note: There is actually a new station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train line called Joetsu Myoko Station but it is located about 25km north of the ski resorts in Myoko. Especially for those travelling from the south, the Nagano-Myoko Kogen route remains the most convenient way to get to Myoko by train.

If you are travelling from Narita Airport, expect the entire journey by train bus to take around 4.5 hours.
