Not the biggest area, but loads to do!
Sugadaira is one of my local resorts and so I usually get in at least 10 days here a season. Like I mentioned in the title, it's not the biggest area, and I personally wouldn't make a day of riding there, but for a morning or afternoon I can have a ton of fun!

The resorts themselves are small (compared to Hakuba sized resorts), but they do interconnect so the one pass is good for at least 20 pistes. It's

Great family resort!
Having won one of the Snow Japan draws, I was eagerly waiting for a decent day to head on up to Sugadaira. The forecast for Saturday was for mixed sun/cloud and a bit of wind, so....packed both Shore-lets in the car, and off we went. After a 30 minute detour caused by a snow-closed road ( who thought too much snow could be a bad thing?) we arrived at Sugadaira, and were greeted by bluebird skies, and lighter winds

The best snow I have experienced
I have been to a number of places in Japan including Nozawa, Hakuba and Myoko... but the best snow that I have experienced was at Sugadaira.

They don't seem to get as much as the other places I mentioned, but it was just incredible quality the two days we were there.

Sugadaira isn't about steeps. The place is spread out over a large area, in effect it's a bit like Shiga Kogen in that it's a number

Spring snow
First of all, Sugadaira isn't a resort per se but more of a resort area. The area is a cluster of small resorts that are hardly even physically connected (Only Pine Beak 1 & 2 and Taro & Davos). If you try to hit all the areas you'll end up frustrated and wasting a bunch of time. It's definitely best to stay in one or two of the areas and roam around than trying to navigate the roads if you

Sugadaira was quite good for us.

I prefer Sugadaira to Hakuba and Shiga anyway.

The views are really good, very close to Tokyo, hotels are not so expensive, and the meals were great!

Although Japan has many good ski resorts, Sugadaira is the most exceptional, trust me

Hmm...not cheap and reminded me of Australia which is not a good thing for snow.

Snow was ulta-hard packed and the resort is way too spread out to be convenient.

And they lied outrageously about snow depth - no way there was 110cm

A lot of people mention that Sugadaira is a bit small, but there are a VERY large number of runs, and there is always some fun to be found up the sides or cutting a few corners off. I have just started teaching my daughter to board, and the longest lift at Davos is excellent for this. Three slightly different slopes to the bottom, managable for beginner but it is also possible to cut off one corner through a vast

Had a rad time, it was a little flat but there were some pretty cool spots under lifts and other things, the first time boarders liked the intro that this mountain offered, lots of terrain was covered kids dodged and fun had!

But then isn't anytime in the mountains gonna be cool as all hell!!

I came here for a 4 day trip after about a 2 year break from skiing. It was a good place to get back on the skis.

There are 3 mountains joined together - but far apart, if you don't have a car, it could be boring.

I only went to Pine Beak and White Davos. Pine Beak was less crowded but I dont have the skill to ski the 'challenge course' and the forest trail was flat/inclined in places so then

Ok.

So if I knew anything that I know now then I wouldn't have bothered. But this was the first trip I booked in Japan and was recommended by the travel agent.

The place was rabid with snakes of schoolkids. No park. No fun through the trees. Probably the worst hotel I've ever had the misfortune to look at. Short runs, and boring for the snowboarder.

Forget it. Go somewhere good instead

I go to Oomatsu which is basically the 1st mountain on the left. There are a few different runs from the top, but they are fairly similar, some small natural jumps (the snow isn't too forgiving) it's cheap - you get a thousand back, no real crowds, no real show-ponies. For what you pay for, its a very good mountain.

The top can be daunting and icy but it flattens out fairly quickly. Beginner- intermediate. Beginners shouldn't waste too

A poorer cousin to larger resorts nearby (Shiga Kogen, Nozawa, Myoko a bit further), but this place does benefit from the fact that not many people go there - when I have been anyway.

A pretty non-descript resort split into a few parts, ok for maybe a day but no more
