Always good snow
I have been here many times, great resort and lots of stashes of pow to be had.

All the tree runs are wide open and the top part of the mountain has some great drops and hits.

It's a big mountain also which is not packed even on busy days recommend this place

Sunny spring turns!
I've ridden at Suginohara off and on for the last 13yrs, and it is one of my favourite mid-winter resorts. I've written mid-winter powder reviews of the place from a snowboarders perspective, but seeing as (as my buddy puts it,) I've gone to the dark-side during the spring, aka skiing, I'll write about my experiences with that.

First off, Suginohara is big! There are pistes everywhere so you have a huge choice of slopes from super mellow greens, to crazy steep

Great potential, just need the right conditions...
I like Akakura Kanko, but I'd like it a lot more if I could hit it with the right conditions... Being a weekend warrior, that seems to have eluded me so far... But still, it's a great resort!

Akakura Kanko is a large resort with plenty of slopes, and lots of fun terrain out in the designated 'off-piste' section. The cool thing about Kanko is that even if the conditions aren't the best (like when I went), there's plenty of

Deep and friendly!
Seki Onsen is a small resort in the Myoko area, with a very friendly feel to it and a pretty solid group of local riders. The whole resort has only 2 lifts and they turn pretty slowly, but the lifties are really funny older guys who like to joke around and make small talk.

I have visited Seki Onsen about six or seven times over the years, always during peak season and always when the place seems to have been

Great snow, good variety
Myoko is still a quaint village though it appears to be undergoing a rapid transition as visitor numbers increase. There are plenty of small, cheap restaurants to choose from though the quality is only average - as is the variety of food on offer.

There are several alternative resorts that are relatively easy to access within 30 to 40 minutes via shuttle. However if your visit is during a busy time you may find yourself waiting for infrequent services and not

Puking all day!
Akakura Kanko, Myoko, Niigata. Saturday, January 31st.

I was lucky enough to win a ticket from SnowJapan to use at any of the Myoko resorts. Thanks SJ! I received the ticket in the mail and decided to use it that coming Saturday to ride at Akakan with my buddy 'Bushiman', and another friend who was visiting from Tokyo.

I would generally take the highway to Myoko from Nagano city, but on this particular day we decided to use the back roads toward

Blizzard day at Suginohara
I visited Suginohara on the first day of February at the end of a weekend of heavy snow. The previous 3 days had gotten snow and the day I visited was no different.

The right hand side of the map is serviced by a gondola and a couple pair lifts which means doing laps can get a bit slow around late morning when many people arrive from further afield and start queuing for the gondola. Luckily the staff are pretty good

Probably the best in Myoko
Although Myoko is really a series of ski mountains, Suginohara is probably my favorite.

On this day, it was a white out which I love beacuse the snow was deep and not many people out on the slopes. 30-40 cm of fresh pow all day, our tracks pretty much covered up everytime we went up the lifts.

At the very top there are some good tree runs if your willing to duck some ropes.

It's also a good entry point

Third visit, did not disappoint!
Rained first day, then turned to snow next day. Bluebird, and a few cloudy days followed.
Unfortunately, the weather is too warm, and snow is depleting.
Skiing at Suginohara was fab, and we made the most of the goog weather when it was here.

Staying at the Alp Resort Hotel (true "skiing, ski out") we could make choices as the weather changed.
This is our third trip to Akakura, so it must be OK

Good for beginners
This is by far my least favorite in Myoko.

It's pretty small and has a lot of flat areas.

It was a pow day when I went but hard to keep momentum in the flat areas.

Overall, I would recommend this place for people who are just starting out or with children

Great day compliments of the Snowjapan giveaway!!!
This is a good place to visit for all kinds of skiers/boarders. Has a little something for everyone.

For me, the tree runs on the far left (looking up the mntn) are the best. Lots of fresh pow and pretty much just my friends and I going in.

It was a holiday weekend, so more people than usual.

Still easy enough to find freshies if you know where to look! Thanks again Snowjapan

Great All-Round Resort
Thanks again to another SJ giveaway, I was able to go with my fellow SJ lurker, Neck, to one of our favorite resorts...

Suginohara is pretty big, with some of the longest pistes in Nagano/Niigata. And surrounding these pistes are exceptional areas of slackcountry! Very easy access, very easy exits. Plus, it get's some fantastic snow!
The downer is that the whole resort faces south, so if the sun comes out for any prolonged period of time, this can seriously affect your
