Good snow, bigger than I thought it would be
I had read a few things about Kawaba - some people had noted how it was larger than they imagined, and for some reason I kind of ended up feeling that too.
Nice long lifts and if you keep to the quads, fast too.
It's a bit out of the way - well, 25 mins from Numata IC - but still pretty popular.
And I can see why.
Being high up, the snow quality was really good and... well, that's enough for

Really good for "playing in the snow"
Not my first choice personally but I was quite pleased with Norn.
It's a fairly small ski hill and I had a good few hours on the uncrowded slopes.
The folks that I went with were really there for the "playing in the snow" gig... and Norn has a really big area for that kind of activity and seems to be popular for it.
Recommended for that.
It's also really easy to get to just 5 minutes from Minakami IC on the Kanetsu Expressway

The sum of all my reviews
Kusatsu is an Onsen town that has a ski field nearby. Last season on my first visit to Kusatsu I asked a number of people why they were there. Why did I ask this, well on my first visit to Kusatsu last season the snow conditions weren't very good, the base level was low, and the snow was so icy I really needed ice skates instead of skis, and yet just up the road in Yuzawa, which as the crow

White World Oze Iwakura

Definitely worth a visit!
Last year my buddy and I both won tickets to visit White World, and this year thanks to another SJ Giveaway we were lucky enough to snaffle some more...

This place is a gem.

It's like how Hakuba Cortina used to be before the word got out. Great out-of-bounds terrain, easily accessed, straight forward exits back to piste. Nobody else going anywhere near the trees... Coming from riding in Nagano & Niigata, this is completely unheard of.

So, yeah, the off-piste is a

Worth the extra drive time.
White World Oze Iwakura is a nice sized resort in Katshina Village, Gunma Prefecture. They have a nice variety of runs for both intermediate and advanced riders. There are also a few runs for beginners at the bottom, but I think the hill is more geared toward intermediate riders.

Though it is a little harder to get to from Tokyo than some of the other hills in Gunma and Yuzawa, I think that people who make the trip will not be

Ungroomed Powder Fun!
Overview

White Valley is a small, local hill in Tanigawa Onsen (hot spring) in Minakami. It is known by many of the locals as “Little Tenjin” in reference to the larger and more famous Tanigawa Tenjindaira located just above White Valley. Besides it’s location, White Valley and Tenjin have a number of other similarities. Both get a lot of fresh powder and both have nice ungroomed walls. In fact the majority of White Valley is ungroomed which is their major selling

Good place
Minakami is good. This was only the second place I've been to in Japan, so I can't really compare it to much, but despite looking pretty small, there are quite a few long runs here.

As other said, there are lots of runs for different skill levels, however I had one problem. I'm not a great skier, but I got bored on the beginner hills, and then found the "intermediate" runs much too hard. There was a HUGE gap in necessary

YES!
Sooooo happy I discovered Iwakura this year... my own fault for ignoring the signs on the way to Marunuma.

I've already been twice this season and am planning to go again soon.

I live in Tokyo, but I've come to like this place so much that I'd probably consider getting a season pass... but alas, I tend to cheat on my favorite ski-jo's.

All you really need to know is Gondola + Milky Way. Best combo ever

Let's Marunuma!
I came here by car from Yuzawa, which had noticeably different (and worse) weather - maybe worth remembering if you're in the area searching for the best conditions. The previous review by foofighter1981 gives some great practical info which, unlike me, you should try to follow as I ended up snowboarding down the skiers-only "Blue run" and paying separately for lunch!

On this occasion, unseasonally warm temperatures had affected the condition of the snow, particularly off-piste, so I stayed on-piste for

Awesome Off-Piste / Back Country Oporunities 90 Minutes from Tokyo
Decided at the last minute to do an "out-and-in" for the day to the nearest resort to Tokyo we could find even though the weather report said it would be warm and sunny (as it had been for days).

Instead of choosing trusty old Kagura (Niigata Yuzawa exit from Kanetsu only two hours from Tokyo), or Oze, we picked Kawaba.

While Kawaba only has 3 big intermediate courses, and a few Advanced with Moguls (booo), the Back Country Opportunities

Houdaigi Dai Suki!
For a relatively small resort Houdaigi has lots to offer in terms of terrain, length of runs and snow quality. The majority of the mountain is geared towards beginners and intermediates with some nice long runs by Japan standards. That said, there are some steeps up top with very fun tree and off-piste sections.

The views from the top of Lift 9 are amazing on a bluebird day which I had the pleasure of experiencing.

A nice hill off the beaten path.
Overview

Houdaigi is a ski hill in the north of Minakami just under 20 km from Minakami IC (highway exit). It offers some nice courses for riders of all levels and due to it’s location it consistently gets good powder snow during the winter months. It is located on the northwestern slopes of Gunma’s Mt. Hotaka and due to this orientation the snow is less effected by sun than other hills in the area. I would consider Houdaigi
