Great Winter Vacation for Family
We are from Malaysia. With 5 years experience living in Japan last 10 years ago, I'm looking the best winter vacation for my family on this trip back to Japan which is near to Tokyo. Found it here in Naeba Prince Resort.

Great family winter vacation if you are looking for fun in snow from kids to adult. Almost what you wanted is here. The base is at the door step. You can take a rest to the room for

Awesome
The friendly staff was very helpful and patient. The room was clean and had a view of mountain, which was great because as soon as the lift started moving I was out the room. There is WiFi in the room only, plenty of restaurants of different types of food from 5 course meals to an indoor picnic where everyone shares picnic tables. Oh and select lifts continue into the night until 9pm.

There are shops that

The atmosphere of this resort was great.

The only thing I didn't like was how short the runs were.

It's perfect for the beginner skier/snowboarder but not for the intermediate/advanced skier. I only bought a lift ticket to ski the Naeba side since I've been to Kagura before.

Next time I will be sure to ski both resorts since it offers more variety when it comes to the runs.

Naeba: It's pretty big!
Naeba, like I said in the title, is big.

The bottom of the resort is very open and the runs are big. The Prince Hotel is reallllly big. There are many restaurants and shops. There are two gondolas not counting the longest gondola in Japan the "Dragondola" which connects Naeba with neighboring Kagura. It has that big ski resort feel.

I think Naeba is a great place to bring a family; they have daycare, there is a kids room they

Past it's peak
Naeba is of course famous for being famous.

Lots of runs down by the base, getting narrower at the top. Location for a famous ski movie in the 80's (I think). Yuumin concerts. (Fuji Rock Festival, in the summer of course).

The hulking Naeba Prince Hotel at the base is huge. It also feels like it is remaining from some long gone era when the ski boom was on. A real 80's feel, and not particularly in

Long live the Queen
Naeba had long been on my list of places to check out, and the free tickets for kids helped seal the deal over competing destinations. Getting up extra early, and after ritually sacrificing a canned coffee to the gods of the Kan-Etsu for their favor, we embarked on our journey to the Land of the Erstwhile Bubble.

Kita-Kanto Expressway to the Kan-Etsu, then off at Tsukiyono. Grind it out over the Mikuni toge, until emerging onto the Niigata side, at which

The wife and I made a plan Thursday night to head up to Naeba. We reserved a rental room (weekends Y10000) because we have a 10 month old. I took the morning shift on the mountain, she had her first lesson in the afternoon.

The rental room had a shower, bed, tv...almost like a small cheap hotel room. (In the future we will just reserve a hotel). Just what we needed though, having a 10 month old w/us. No complaints with

Visited Naeba my only other time about 17 yrs ago. It had been snowing off and on for the past couple of weeks w/ a forecast calling for clear and sunny on the 2nd so signed up for a JR Ski Ski 1-day package (shinkansen RT, bus 1-way, all-day lift ticket) out of Ueno on the 1st train out, 2 days before.

Was on the hill a little before 10. Sunny w/ very little wind, the morning was crisp w/

Very nice day today and most of it was open. What wasn't open was easily accessible, though. Ski patrol didn't seem to care about off piste or getting creative on closed runs. They just kind of laughed it off. I spent about 6 hours on the mountain and didn't see everything so it's a good size. It was really icy at the bottom especially later in the day so that's something for beginners to keep in mind.

Even with all the

From my understanding, the mighty Naeba is a flagship of the 'bubble era' resorts. Arriving here at night with heavy snow falling is quite surreal, steep mountains partially lit by the reflected light of the mini-city wedged into the narrow valley floor below, high above march rows of giant high voltage power lines giving the whole scene a strange science fiction feel.

We opted to stay at Naeba, with night skiing (for what it's worth) & more accom options, while riding

Ive only ever snowboarded in NZ where I lived. (currently here on working holiday visa) so I hadnt seen any powder or done powder boarding before. The day I was there the weather was actually a bit of a nightmare, we couldnt see a thing really and it was really cold and windy.. But it was snowing harder than anything I had ever seen in NZ making for some absolutely incredible snow.

If you stick to the sides of the runs

This was my second time to visit Naeba and it did not disappoint.

A good 20-30cm of snow had accumulated, the wind had ceased, and the whole mountain was open. It was one of those blue bird days with panoramic views of the entire region from the top. Not being too familiar with the mountain I took my time once off the gondola and figured out how the lifts and runs connected to each other.
