Early, early season... Still not bad.
Hakkoda isn't known for it's groomed runs, and they are pretty forgettable. Unfortunately the top of the mountain wasn't open as we don't have nearly enough snow yet, but considering there was nowhere else to go I was more than happy to ride the two runs that were open all day!

Price was good, since it was early season, we paid ¥2700 per person and rode all day... Snow conditions were, as I said, OK but not great. Lodge was nice,

Powder everyday, even on the one sunny day we had, we had stacks of pow because other off-piste runs become available a short hike from the top of the tram.

If you're new to the mountain, stay close to the orange poles. If you go off-piste try and stay close to other tracks already made as you will get lost / disoriented very quickly. Don't venture out yourself, and don't be a hero at this place as you will die. No

O.M.G.

Growing up boarding on the west coast of the USA, I have experienced similar snow but NOTHING compares to Hakkoda. Nothing.

This place was amazing. I was fortunate to go on a bright blue day (I hear it's notorious for bad weather). The place was like nothing I've seen before.

As an upper intermediate boarder (blues and blacks) I was initially nervous coming here with two beginners especially after reading the reviews. However, I was assured our group

Group of six skiers and one boarder up from Tokyo on Sat morning flight; on the mountain by 10:30. Guided by the Man, Souman san, we got in 3 gondola runs before 15:15 on Saturday.

Sunday, took off on the 09:15 gondola and came back down at 12:00 for lunch after a series of skinning sessions to get to freshies with the last run an absolute dream. After lunch, another big skinning session to get to more freshies and then

Big snow dump the previous couple days made for some deep fresh powder, so deep and unpacked that it made for some hard snowboarding. Anytime you were to fall down meant another five minutes trying to roll out and attempt to stand up. But you cant hate on deep powder, made for a glorious day at the mountain

Hakkoda lived in my head for several years. Photos showed a fascinating place and everyone told me it was awesome. So, when I went there for the first time, my expectations were extremely high.

Hakkoda was better than I could imagine. I make my living with words and I don't really know any to express the experience. It makes all the other resorts seem so insignificant in comparison.

The moment I exited the tram ropeway, cold air blasted me. Quickly, I got

This review has been 4 years in the making with this past year defining it all. Hakkoda is it when it comes to learning and elevating your boarding. All it takes is a desire to improve. If boarding to you is groomed runs, lots of amenities, parks and a fashion show then go to Appi. If you are serious about deep snow, trees, steeps and almost spirtual runs every now and then go to Hakkoda.

Your first

Many years ago I saw some snowboard videos which featured riding in Japan. The videos were 'Snowboarders in Exile' and 'Critical Condition'. It was after watching these videos that I knew one day I would have to get to Japan, to see what they said in the video was true. In the video Steve Graham said people don't ride in the trees. Well about ten years later I have finally made it to Aomori-Ken. I now call Hakkouda Ropeway my

Aomori's Mt. Hakkoda is different. A huge mountain with several ways down, most of which give you a good shot at lots of untracked snow.

With a base of more than two and a half meters for most of the season and plenty of big dumps throughout the year, Hakkoda offers an abundance of powder for those who want to go out and find it.

Be careful going out alone if you don't know the mountain, as it is unforgiving to skiers

Hakkoda san....

...is situated in central Aomori ken. It is accessible by car and by bus from Aomori city (which lies 30 minutes to the north) or from the east (Hachinohe) or west (Kuroishi) via back mountain roads.

It is reknowned as a POWDER mountain....in fact it has the best powder skiing (besides backcountry) of any place in Tohoku....surpassing Hachimantai in its sheer size and freedom to ski out-of-bounds.

The mountain is serviced by one single cable car (capacity 101) that runs every

Some SWEET CHANGES to Hakkoda this year 2001-2002.

First off....big savings. The month passes until last year included both the gondola and the lifts (2 small lifts). This year they have separated them....and the Jan OR Feb pass that was originally 16,000 yen is now only 11,500 yen for unlimited gondola rides. Ride hard and you can pay off your pass in well under 2 days!! Then the rest of the month is FREE!

The bridge at the bottom of the Forest
