Let's Grandeco!
My previous Fukushima ski-jo experience was an enjoyable daytrip to Inawashiro in 2013 [http://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resort-reviews/detail/2013], so assisted by the new-for-2016 Grandeco Daily Reports, I decided to head further up the road to the Ura Bandai area where Grandeco ski resort is situated. Despite safety concerns (following a fatal crash in Nagano), I took an overnight ski bus leaving from Tokyo, and costing 8,400Yen including lift pass. Thankfully the journey from Shinjuku was drama-free and in exactly the reverse order from my

A family oriented resort in Fukushima.
Courtesy of a SnowJapan ticket giveaway (thankyou very much SJ) it's been a while since Grandeco has been reviewed, so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring.

A mate and I ventured there on a Tuesday early in February and coming off the back end of a three day dump, we were rewarded with excellent snow conditions. Being of a slightly higher elevation to the other resorts in the Bandai area (with the exception of Minowa) the snow

Was not impressed from the very beginning.

Parking was 1,000Y. Only 2 lifts at the base, a quad chair lift that stays at the lower runs and a gondola lift that goes to the upper runs. Lower runs are "ok" but very short. The time spent riding the chair doubles the time it takes to get down. Wait for the gondola to the upper runs was never shorter than 30 minutes.

Upper runs were "ok" and more lifts opened more

Went skiing with the kid, and had a blast.

Great weather both days helped. When the kid gets past beginner-intermediate we may want a more difficult course selection, but for now the range was good enough to both amuse me and challenge the kid. The "attractions" (parks, jumps, banked turns) were great fun for both of us. I particularly appreciated the long tree runs. The kid liked the jumps. No lift lines, mellow atmosphere.

I loved this place. We got the night bus up and so we were the first ones on the lifts and there were zero crowds until lunchtime.

This resort is a little small, but when you have it to yourself you don't mind so much. I think this would be good for famillies as all the runs come together at the bottom ensuring that no one gets lost. The snow here was great, it was snowing all night as we

Just went with a buddy and 4 kids between us. We bought the family ticket which paid for 2 adults and 2 elementary kids (12,000yen.) Our other kids are pre-school so they ride for free.

That ticket also gave us 2,000yen in restaurant vouchers. Great deal!

The snow is better here than anywhere else in Fukushima or Niigata this year.

We were pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

Beautiful weather and stunning views of the area certainly helped our mood

Was very lucky and copped two great powder days at Grandeco. The 29th was insane, must have snowed 50cm during the day. The runs up the top weren't crowded and we stuck to them most of the day. Lots of annoying beginners down the bottom runs.

Nothing too steep here, and the occasional flat parts can be overcome if you pay attention.

Food at the restaurant in the top gondola house was great and quite resonable.

The road to Grandeco is pretty

Grandeco was good for me, as I was only learning how to snowboard. In that respect, it was great for a beginner.

Wasnt too crowded, on a Saturday, and the lineups for lifts weren't long at all.

One downside though - too many flat parts where it's hard to keep your speed up. Other than that, was great and I reccommend it.

Will be going back

Grandeco had really great snow the two days I was there. It was not crowded, in fact, I think the longest I ever waited for a lift, was about 30 seconds: even on Sunday.

It's a great drive up the mountian, but I wouldn't want to do it without studless tires: having 4WD also helped. Mind you, I'm known to do just a little over the speed limit.

I guess Gran Deco is best suited to beginers or familys. There's not little

Catches a lot of the foul weather around Bandai so if you don't mind skiing or riding in white out conditions, you're laughin'. One of the best things about this hill: limited access keeps the big crowds out, even on the weekends.

Not big but has a few steeps here and there...relaxed atmosphere...good place if you hate crowds, don't mind a medium-sized hill, and have a ride that suits the road leading up to the base of the hill.

You'll be

Grandeko had a bit of snow, and lots of grass and plants sticking out of it. It made me wonder if they glade at all, or just let the snow cover it.

The gondola is small and little funky. You have to take your snowboards in, and there isn't much room if your deck is more than 160.

There wasn't a park and all the open runs were beginner/intermediate. I had fun working on my flatland tricks, and teaching the crew some

Well, what ski area on Honshu wasn't having snow problems around the new year?

Still, that aside, the lack of snow making machines really surprised me. For the price, Gran Deco is not bad. Even for such a busy time as Jan. 2, there were only three people at the ticket counter, and the line snaked its way out the door all the way to the parking lot tunnel.

The lifts were somewhat convenient at the base, but better on the
