Small but nice!
Biwako Valley is a small ski area with only 8 trails but it is actually pretty good in my opinion.

The entire ski area was open and there was a lot of snow in the trees. Yes the trails are short but if you read the mountain stats you shouldn't be surprised or disappointed. I went on a Friday so it wasn't very crowded. I'm sure the weekends would get very crowded though. There is only one annoying flat spot

This was my first time at Biwako Valley. I had very low expectations based on some of the other reviews but was pleasantly surprised. I did a bus tour from shin osaka that cost 6000 yen for the bus and the lift ticket, which I thought was a pretty good deal overall (depending on day, cost is 5000-9000 yen, and there are also pick ups from 5 spots in Kyoto and Osaka).

On the plus side, the views were

We have been to Biwako about twice a year for the past three years so thought it was time I put a recent review up.

We have loved Biwako every time. Even on the busy days, or when a lift might be closed down it has still been good to us.

This season has been the worst of the three. Every other time we have gone up the whole mountain has been open, the snow has been fantastic (we had ice

This gets 2 stars as it is about 90min by car from Osaka and 60 from Kyoto.\r\n\r\nIt is pricey-5800 to get you an all day lift ticket plus gondola. Kids have to pay a fair bit too.\r\n\r\nOnly 4 runs were open when we were there due to lack of snow (50cm, 90% man made). Ironic, since 2 hours away in Gifu they have record amounts (over 300cm).\r\n\r\nRuns are short-2-3 minutes to get down most. But the lifts are fast (when

I had a great time here it less than a hour away from Kyoto by Train (Kosei Line) and a regular bus from Shiga station to Biwako Valley (320 YEN). A day lift ticket is 4000YEN and uses a electronic swipe card. The Gondola Lift then takes you to the top (1800 YEN).

The locals were very cool and even offered to help me through the ticketing and equipment hire. Most of the signs are still in Japanese but a few

Biwako valley ski resort sits on top of the mountain looking over lake biwa and Otsu. The views are fantastic.

It's as close as you can get to Kyoto and Osaka to ski or snowboard.

If you go on a weekday after a cold spell and a fresh dump of snow it's better than you might expect for somewhere so close to the city

Got there at 11am & bought a 6 hour pass. It was cloudy but when it's clear there must be a great view of Biwako Lake. Because the lifts are open till 6pm we got to see a great sunset. The runs aren't as good as Hachi Kita, but for a short day trip you can't beat it.

Many lift ticket options is nice - I just didn't like having to pay 1,900yen for the gondola to get

OK, the mountain consists of a bunch of green runs that have been re-labeled as blue and black runs. I wasn't fooled. It was crowded as hell too. I think with a whole lot of snow it could be mediocre for a couple hours.

HOWEVER, here is the real kicker.. it costs 6000 yen!! What the hell is that? It has like 8 runs. You have to pay about 2000 yen to ride the gondola to the top, and then another

The most convenient resort for people living in Kyoto and fairly decent considering its convenience.

My advice though it to go for a more decent place that will mean travelling either up to Gifu or further on to Nagano.

Whatever, have a great time!

Well this place deserves a review because it's an hour on the train from Kyoto and you can have a good day here if the snow and wind cooperate. Check the weather before you go, because even in feb and mar this place sometimes closes half the runs.

Gets real crowded.

Also don't go on weekends unless you also enjoy riding the Osaka subways at rush hour. But on weekdays you can have the halfpipe to yourself, a couple of
