Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama

Well equipped and fairly diverse.
Yakebitaiyama is one of the larger Shiga Kogen areas and one of the better equipped. It's run by Prince so there's a bit more money behind than some of the other areas.

The resort is fairly well laid out and good for skiers and snowboarders since there wasn't all that much walking required. There aren't many lifts though. The two gondolas are the main ways of getting around the mountain and they do a good job when it isn't too busy.

Probably better midweek
This was my second time visiting Ryuoo this year and I really wanted to enjoy the place but it has too many points against it to make it worth visiting.

The basic layout of the resort is a long line, from the carpark and base center it's quite far to the middle of the resort. In the morning all of the lift lines are long with people climbing up the mountain. And if you want to go to the top you

Blizzard day at Suginohara
I visited Suginohara on the first day of February at the end of a weekend of heavy snow. The previous 3 days had gotten snow and the day I visited was no different.

The right hand side of the map is serviced by a gondola and a couple pair lifts which means doing laps can get a bit slow around late morning when many people arrive from further afield and start queuing for the gondola. Luckily the staff are pretty good

First heavy snow of the season
I visited Ryuo on one of their first weekends of the season last year. There had been heavy snow the night before but sadly there wasn't much of a base before that so many areas were still closed despite looking very tempting.

It was pretty busy with a lot of university aged people around. Most car number plates were from Tokyo and other parts of Kanto.

From the parking area it is a bit of an awkward journey to the slopes and

Late March powder day
I visited Iwatake on the last weekend of it's season. It was a busy 3 day weekend and I expect even more people were drawn to Hakuba after a late season snow storm the day before.

I spent most of the morning in the "view" area of the resort (at the top far back of the resort.) The snow here was great and there were a few nice spots between courses to pop into. By 10:30 the queue for the pair

Big but busy
I visited Yakebi (as it's affectionately known) in early to mid March. There was perhaps a very light dusting over night but some fresh left over from the day before.

Beautiful blue sky and great views. I think the views from the Ichinose area are a bit better as you can see Nagano and the massive wall of the alps but it's still pretty good.

It was very busy in the morning with very long queues for the gondolas but the staff

A fun little resort
A nice little local resort. For people in the area it is a good place for a midweek day off or families at the weekend.

Compared with nearby Asama 2000 this resort is excellent but it can't compete with the Northern Nagano giants.

It is rather small but the snow is usually fairly soft (most likely due to the high altitude and low temps rather than frequent top ups.)

At the start of the season in mid to late November the place can

Don't Bother
Eastern Nagano resorts are sadly pretty poor for snow.

Even those up at 2000m get very little, and what does fall is usually blown off by the strong winds.

This is one of my local resorts but there is little reason to visit. Local skiers come here in late Autumn for some early practice but all the snow is machine made and unpleasant to ride on.

If you REALLY need to ski/board while in the area I'd recommend Sugadaira or Yunomaru nearby
