Biwako Valley review
This gets 2 stars as it is about 90min by car from Osaka and 60 from Kyoto.\r\n\r\nIt is pricey-5800 to get you an all day lift ticket plus gondola. Kids have to pay a fair bit too.\r\n\r\nOnly 4 runs were open when we were there due to lack of snow (50cm, 90% man made). Ironic, since 2 hours away in Gifu they have record amounts (over 300cm).\r\n\r\nRuns are short-2-3 minutes to get down most. But the lifts are fast (when

Hakuba Norikura Onsen review by SnowKobe
This was the first time for a January visit at Norikura for a while. Had almost 100cm fall on us over the 5 days, and the hotel Alps was virtually empty midweek.

Snow was incredible-too much at times as visibility got tough at the top. Still a nice mix of groomed and ungroomed runs and tons of powder to make tracks on.

Saw a number for foreigners with backpacks heading off-piste

Hakuba Norikura Onsen review
Our annual trip was later than usual. First day was OK with 3 lifts going and access to about 4 runs. Lift tix priced at 2000/adult, 1500/kid. Snow was OK.

Wed morning only 2 lifts/2 runs open. Tix price down to 1000/adult or kid.

Snow OK in morning, but then rain started around noon. Turned to snow though and got 15cm that night.

Went back on Saturday for morning skiing.

Hardly anyone there

Tsugaike Kogen review
Tsugaike has the most snow in Nagano now, thanks to its gondola which can take you up higher than the other resorts.

Conditions were good at top. Board park was impressive and opened at 10:30am.

More challenging black runs open than other areas at this time of year. \r\n\r\nNo waits for lifts.

Tickets 2500 adult/1500 child.

More crowded on Saturday, but they got rained on unfortunately

Hakuba Cortina review
Had 15cm dump on us on March 31st, so plenty of fresh powder on the 1st.

Cold and cloudy at top in morning, but bottom was fine. Later top cleared and was great as bottom got soft.

Lift tix only 1500/adult, 1000/kids.

Busy at bottom with beginners, but the two lifts were fast so no lines, and access to enough runs to satisfy all

Hakuba Cortina review
Cortina is a decent size resort with a higher altitude and more shaded exposure than others, so it is a bit cooler and keeps its snow longer.

Lots of novice boarders clogging up the middle, but upper slopes devoid of anyone (on Thurs and Fri). In general fewer skiers as it is the furthest north in the Hakuba range.

A couple pretty challenging slopes (for us at least) at top.

First two mornings were very nice, thanks to a dumping of 20-30cm

Hakuba Norikura Onsen
The hotel is getting older but still is a great deal for us after 10 years of going there.

Rooms have hotplates and fridges. Onsen in hotel overlooking slopes, plus small pools on a different floor (extra fee supposedly charged, but most don't pay I think).

Hotel ski lockers are 10m from slope.

Area itself is kid-friendly. Not as challenging as neighboring Cortina. Combined tix are a good way to cover a lot of ground.

Warmer (and less snow)

Tsugaike Kogen review
This was our first time there, and we were pleased to find plenty of runs our 6 yr old could do. There was also a Sun Kids sledding area the 3 year old enjoyed.

The upper mountain had great views, but not much in the way of challenging runs. It also was crowded by about 10am on Saturday morning, with waits of up to 5 minutes (not that bad, I know). Lifts at the top were poorly organized,

Oku Ibuki review by Snow Kobe
It gets 3 stars because with snow it looked like it might be fun.

Narrow runs, but a series of lifts takes you up over 1,000m in altitude. Some lifts require you to walk uphill to get to the next-didn't anyone take Resort Building 101 in school?

All the areas were lacking snow, but the 50cm advertised was actually 0-30cm in most places. Fun enough for little kids, but most areas would be closed if they had such
