Miyagi Zao Sumikawa Snow Park review by Ro
My only real valid complaint about this place is that the lifts are slow. You got to ride three lifts to get to the top and by the time you get there you're a popsicle. But don't let that discourage you.. there is more than enough fun to be had. Is there off course in Sumikawa? ...it hardly seemed like it. Ski patrols just ride around in their snow mobiles for looks I think. Top of the mountain off to the left just a touch there is so much awesome powdery wonderfulness to be had. It was still decent by midday, but I got a little bored doing the same runs part through the trees and decided to go further out. I took the long meandering course and saw what I thought to be a nice run into the valley through the trees...I decided to give it a shot.

BAD!!!BAD!!! Stupid Ro!

I should be suspended from boarding for at least a week for making this stupid move. I got stuck. I mean bad stuck. There is a drop into the valley, but it flattens out...then if you unstrap and keep going there is what could be avalanche danger. No there is no fence or sign that says don't go here or you could DIE. But I'm positing this to keep other boarders out of that area. So, I pushed on trying to find a way out...I gave up. I spent two and a half hours getting out of this valley in hip deep snow. I missed my bus back to Sendai and I was starting to worry about frost bite because snow had got into my boots. I literally had to dig my way out and make stairs to get back up the hill I came in on. I got back down the mountain after everything was closed. The staff let me into the building and I explained that I had a 'problem' on the mountain and I missed my bus. The staff then asked around and one sweet older ex-Olympic skier dude gave me a lift back to sendai. I lucked out. The staff were so nice to me, despite my being a complete idiot. I mean they could have kept drilling me for answers and threaten to ban me from their park, but instead they found a way to get me home and chatted with me as they closed up.
Date visited: From February, 2007
Snow condition on visit: Pow, chilly with light snow in the AM, sunny in the Afternoon
Things I liked: Pow, some tree riding, good fun! Great staff
Things I didn't like: Slow lifts, somewhat small, limited and aged facilities
