Furano Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 7:13am
Weather conditions: snowing. cloudy. cold.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Weather patterns for the last week have seen blue bird days followed by snow from early afternoon into the evening. Todays report is no exception with yesterdays perfect morning followed by around 15 cm overnight and still falling.

The mounatin is fully operational. Kuma is excellent, although its only open a few times a day those runs are certainly memorable.

The forecast is for this storm to continue today, (sorry, no blue sky this morning) and for the next few days it should snow.

Saturday night Cultural Evenings have now started at the Furano Hiroba. Its a great place to experience traditional dances, Furano Belly Dancing and a rotating schedule of other performers. Check out the schedule at the Tourist Association Office.

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 8:10am
Weather conditions: Cloudy & Snowy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been snowing since the early hours of the morning and the snow levels in the village have definitely increased since yesterday with maybe 20cm or so of fresh snow on the ground this morning in the lower village.

Last night was quite windy so there is likely to be some nice deep areas higher up the mountain where the wind has accumulated wind blown snow.

The official Hirafu numbers haven't reported snow levels increasing higher up, but that seems strange considering how much snow has fallen lower down.

All lifts excepted Holiday 3 are expected to run today.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 9:16am
Weather conditions: Blue-Grey skies, sunny spells
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature seems to have dropped a little more this morning, we're below zero on the temperature gauge.

A cloudy start with spotlights of sun lighting up the lower belly of the Naeba mountain, whilst the peak has an appearance of being smudged out by its artist. The air is still, there is a slight frosting on the ground with no new snow.

Here's sitting waiting for a powder morning in Kagura tomorrow - hopefully!   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The warm weather continues in Minakami with another warm day expected today. Currently it is mostly clear skies and 3 deg C, with an expected hihg of 7 deg C. The temperature is forecast to drop later this evening with snow on the radar from late this evening.

Another warm day forecast for tomorrow as a high pressure system passes over Japan followed closely by a low pressure system which is expected to bring snow for three days from Saturday.

Oana ski area is now closed due to lack of snow and the other low lying ski areas are struggling to stay open. The higher ski areas; Tenjin, Houdaigi, Minakami Kogen still have good coverage with all lifts and runs operating.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 9:40am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday turned out to be another mild one and eventually quite grey and overcast. Unfortunately we got some more rainfall last night as well... and no new snow to report, even up at Kagura.

That has cleared up now though and although it was once again overcast just a bit earlier, it has brightened up in the last hour or so and the sun is out at the moment. To the north there's a fair bit of blue sky and it is looking like it will be another fine day. Once again a high of around 5 is forecast, and once again, it feels mild.

Everyone is hoping this mild period will come to an end soon as the slopes are in need of a refresh. Snow conditions currently vary, with the best as expected higher up.

Snow is forecast for tonight but then cloud again for tomorrow, after that it looks like it will be the weekend before we can expect any change of decent snowfall. Fingers crossed.

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 9:40am
Weather conditions: cloudy, gradually snowing more as the day progresses
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Temperatures are falling as the snow clouds roll in. Heavy snows are expected in the evening, so the snow plow covers are coming off in the village. Presently, the icing on the slopes is heinous, but snow will be falling after lunch to smooth things out a bit before the big stuff comes tonight.

Today's pick would have to be the upper reaches of Suginohara as it will receive the brunt of the snow, but watch out for high winds as it gets closer to closing time.

Here are your Myoko area levels for today:
150cm (Akakura Kanko);
145cm (Akakura Onsen);
115cm (Ikenotaira);
230cm at the top, 90cm bottom (Suginohara);
140cm (Kumado Snowboard Park);
90cm (Pine Valley);
240cm (Seki Onsen);
105cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 13:48pm
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Fine weather in Nozawa village today but there was a very nice surprise up the top of the mountain. A light dusting on Yamabiko reminded us all what new snow feels like under the board. The rest of the mountain was quite hard and groomed, and stayed that way longer than what it has done, due to lower temperatures.

We are expecting more significant snow tonight, so it would be a good idea to get to bed early and make the most of it before the crowds hit on Saturday.

There is another heavy fall expected over the weekend.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 14:10pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning was very fine with clear skies and fine views early on, and while there is still a fair amount of blue skies around there is more cloud now but the snow that was forecast to maybe appear later in the day hasn't shown up yet. Still fine. It is also colder than it has been over the last few days, but still not mid-winter cold.

The New Year is well and truly over now and as is often the case the resort is not at all crowded at the moment - in fact, almost the opposite. Always like this just after new year and it is a good time to visit. Some fresh toppings of snow would add to that attraction and hopefully we might be in for some of that overnight tonight and into tomorrow.

More snow is forecast for towards the weekend as well, and we'll bring you more on that.

Nighta for today is planned at the following resort areas:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...
