Niseko Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 8:30am
Weather conditions: over-cast, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
With the weekend came more people and although the groomers still held up really well (with the exception being on the front) and Hanazono being open down to the bottom, there were many more people on the hill. The warmer temperatures caused a bit of a melt but hopefully some of the snowfall this morning will make up for it. The hill is almost totally open even down to the gondola and now we can watch the gates to see when they open up. The ski patrol I talked to weren't to telling as to when they were going to open them.

The temperature will be slightly warmer today in the village and the winds shouldn't be too tremendous on the hills. -4/-8 and the clouds should be coming in with the wind from the west.

The local restaurants are serving up some awesome stuff and remember if you're here in Japan it is always fun to try a new culinary adventure.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 10:04am
Weather conditions: dropping humidity and increasing snow in the valleys.\r\nsolid cloud & snow up high.\r\n
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A warm night turned into a humid morning with good dumping snow above about 1200m. Light late morning winds picking up to disperse the humidity and bring the snow down into the valleys.
Descending cloud should gradually close in lower down, but cold and dumping up on the higher runs.
Expected to clear and cool as the day goes on and the wind switches to from over the range, making for a frosty and cold night.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 10:22am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It dumped last night, 10cms on the echoland base car this morning and cars packing out the Happo Gondola parks for the first time this season. Goryu is reporting a 95 cm base (up 10 cm from yesterday) but with snow since last night and snow still falling expect deep powder up top today.

Goryu/47 are doing cheap early season tickets until the 14th. Enjoy...

Today is the first day this season where avalanche risk seriously needs to be considered. There is enough snow now to produce large-scale avalanches big enough to bury a person. With recent fluctuating temperatures it's likely fresh snow will slide especially on solar aspects when it clears and heats up/if it rains/if temperatures increase. Travel with caution if going back-country/off-piste. Watch what's under the powder as the base isn't that developed and there are still a lot of protruding rocks/stumps etc.

Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Moderate

Travel Advisory:

There's enough snow now to produce large scale avalanches big enough to bury a person. Travel with caution if going back-country/off-piste. Also watch for partially buried rocks/stumps etc. under fresh powder and natural snow slides especially on solar aspects.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sleet / snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was mixed weather in different parts of the Yuzawa area - reports from up at Kagura and Tashiro tell us of generally fine weather up there with some blue skies as well as a fair bit of cloud, along with some decent conditions and not too many crowds (especially at Tashiro). Further down in the valley things were a bit more mixed but the rain held off for most of the day even though it was fairly grey most of the time.

This morning we have some rain/sleet falling at town level, with snow falling higher up on the mountains, so Kagura will be getting a bit of a refil. Naeba is reporting about 5-10cm of fresh snow overnight. Light wind at the moment but fairly moderate later on today.

The forecast is for sleet turning into snow later today and it looks like we can expect snow to fall into tomorrow as well so fingers crossed that the temperatures stay low and we get some new snowfall on the ground.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 10:41am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday there were a few spots of rain early on but it cleared up and there was a fair bit of blue skies at Naeba and over at Kagura.

Tashiro opened for the first time this season and some favourable reports are coming back from that first day which was perhaps surprisingly not too busy. Tashiro will also be open today and after that they plan to open proper for the season next weekend.

This morning we have about 5-10cm of fresh snow on the mountain side and light snow is falling at the moment down to village level, so there will be more higher up. A fair bit of low cloud as well so low visibility this morning and some fairly strong winds forecast for later on in the day. -4 degrees up at the Kagura main gelende.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 10:52am
Weather conditions: Cloud, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More snow falling this morning in Nozawa, with about 15cm of fresh snow overnight on the top Yamabiko course, 10cm on Uenotaira and 5cm on Higake - though please note that new snowfall hasn't changed the official snow depths on those runs.

Visibility is poor this morning with only the bottom part of the mountain visible from the village. The good news is that snow is forecast for today and into tomorrow, so everyone is hoping that we'll get some decent snowfall that will let the resort open up more.

With the Paradise course open this weekend, a 4200m course down from the top of the mountain is now possible.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 11:11am
Weather conditions: Cloud, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More snow to report this morning, with about 5cm or so on the top of the car but I have seen some cars that seem to have much more coming from different parts of the region. It is still snowing this morning and looks set to continue through today and into tomorrow as well. It's cold but not mid-winter cold.

A few resorts seem to be opening up more lifts as the snow depths gradually get better.

Ichinose family is running 3 lift, Kumanoyu has 4, Okushiga Kogen is running 3, and there are 4 lifts moving at the Yokoteyama/Shibutoge area... with other lifts in other resort areas. There is still little connectivity between the resort areas and we will need to see a fair bit more snowfall in order for that aspect of Shiga Kogen to open up.

It's still early though and if we get some more snow in the next few days things should be looking good.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 11:21am
Weather conditions: clouds clearing, patches of blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday's conditions were amazing. Skiing and Snowboarding was very easy on the white dry fluffy snow, and some parts of the runs had too much snow on the to actually get into the trees.

Waist deep in parts, otherwise knee deep it was amazing until early afternoon. Then it stopped snowing and temperatures rose a little and the snow quality was affected.

Last night was dangerously icy in town, with cars slipping and sliding out of control on a number of occasions. It is also dangerous for pedestrian traffic so be careful.

Halfpipe update: The World Cup will not run this year, however the FIS SNOWBOARD HALFPIPE FURANO OPEN CUP is scheduled for January 25 and 26. This means the halfpipe needs to be ready earlier than ever, with the late January event meaning to pipe should be open to the public from early February.    Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Sunday 9th December 2007, 16:17pm
Weather conditions: light snows intermittent
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Apologies for the delay in posting a report here - a few technical issues that have prevented us from reporting, but we hope things will be back to normal tomorrow.

More snow over the weekend in the Myoko region and probably another 20cm or so on the mountains. Things are calm and almost windless today with temperatures relatively mild during the day time.

Akakura kanko resort opened for the first time this season yesterday with the other resorts still planning to open next weekend.   Read more ...
