Fine, cloud nearby
Good morning from Yuzawa.
There were a few short periods of sun and blue sky during the day yesterday but it generally remained cloudy with even a few spots of rain at times - and snow higher up. (It's also worth pointing out that yesterday Kagura were reporting 5cm on their staff message board, rather than the 2cm that they were reporting on their main homepage... also they seem to be reporting another 2cm this morning).
It was keeping relatively cold with wind probably contributing to that.
This morning there are blue skies above Yuzawa; more cloud hanging just to the north over Minamiuonuma. And the forecast appears to be a mix of cloud and fine, with the chance of some spots of rain (but hopefully not).
Early on, it's a mostly fine start to the day.
And in a few ways today is the start of the last stretch of the season. Iwappara, Maiko, Ishiuchi and Joetsu Kokusai all managed to stay open through yesterday. I was up at Maiko for a few hours and it was fun. While the snow has disappeared from much of the lower half, there was still good snow cover up at the top Okusoeji area. And not many people around for their last day of the season.
From today, we are left with Kandatsu Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Kagura open every day and Naeba planning to re-open for weekends and Golden Week.
* Kandatsu Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Kagura remain open every day. * Naeba is closed today but open on weekends and over Golden Week. * Further details below. * Yuzawa Now reports will continue to be posted daily until 6th May.

Fine, some cloud
Good morning everyone.
Ah, it's Monday once again.
And this morning there is just a dusting of snow for me to report. Not enough to award any cm to the report, even if I'm still feeling a little rock'n'roll after some fun out on the slopes yesterday. It was cool to be able to slide on some fresh in early April. I wonder if that will be the last of it. Lots of snow left on the mountain with great snow cover... still a lot of spring fun left to be had if you want some.
Fine blue skies looking over towards Mt Yotei with a bit more cloud above the resort mountains.
From today we are down to just the Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri resort areas remaining open. Four lifts remain open at Hirafu (with the Gondola now rested on weekdays) and the four lifts at Niseko Annupuri remain open. More details below and I will keep those checked every day.
And just to be clear: the Niseko Village and Niseko Hanazono areas are now closed. Otsukaresama deshita!
Mixed weather is there on the forecasts for this coming week but it should be generally fairly mild but not warming up too much. There might well be some rain involved but sunshine too and perhaps even a little snow. Let's take it one day at a time.
Monday 9th April 2018
Resort specific information (operations subject to change):
- Ace Family quad (* operating daily until 15th April) - Ace Number 2 Center Four (* operating daily until 6th May) - King Number 3 (* operating daily until 6th May) - King Number 4 (* operating daily until 6th May) - Hirafu Gondola CLOSED TODAY (* operating only on 14th, 15th, 21st, 22nd April & 28th April - 6th May)
- Most of Hirafu remains open - Lower part of Super closed - All of Hanazono area closed
(Less important but nice to see the official snow depth numbers going up as well).
Over at Goryu, the Toomi quad lift is now closed but you can still ride down to base. At Happo-one you can still ride down to base at Nakiyama South but otherwise need to get the Gondola back down to base. Anyway, details are updated below and we'll keep an eye on those every morning.
Hope you some of you can come to enjoy this.
The four ski resorts that remain open all plan to remain at least part open until Sunday 6th May.
Ski resort information on Monday 9th April 2018 (at time of writing):
- Grat quad - Alpen quad - Riesen quad - Usagidaira pair (* open only on weekends/holidays) - Nakiyama Number 3 triple - Gondola - Panorama pair - Kokusai Number 3 pair (* open only on weekends/holidays) - Kurobishi Number 2 quad - Kurobishi Number 3 pair
5cm of it at base too. A nice surprise yesterday with a mix of clearer conditions and sometimes snow yesterday and more snowfall this morning. The forecast appears to be cloud-light snow for the day today so perhaps we will get a little more.
Great to see things looking 'winter' once again and that cold feeling, however short-lived it might be!

Some sun peeking out between the clouds
We’re down to three open resorts, and we’ll just see how long the snow will hold out. All three are scheduled to stay open until early May/Golden Week, but that snow has really disappeared.
We did see some more flakes this morning, though, and there are patches of precipitation all around us (obvious sheets of snow or rain going down from the clouds).
The wind is tricky to report on; I said calm yesterday and then things started blowing like crazy. We had strong south winds earlier, and it's now calm.
Akakura Kanko: 170cm, 1°; Myokokogen Sky Cable Gondola, Hotel No. 3 lift; closing May 6
Lotte Arai Resort: 336cm, 2.5°; all lifts running; Mamushigaeshi, Exciter, Legendary, Discovery and Rindou Lower courses closed; Funaishi-zawa, Happy Place and Benzaku-zawa open in the avalanche-controlled areas open; closing May 6
Naeba is closed from today (Monday) until Friday and it will re-open at the weekend.
The image below shows what runs are scheduled to be open.
