Naeba Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 8:52am
Weather conditions: Sun, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things are looking very different this morning. The sun is out! The bottom slopes of Naeba are still mostly white though I expect that to perhaps melt off a bit today if the sun keeps up even though it is a chilly morning.

Up at Kagura it is -3 degrees and the resort are claiming "saiko" (the best) conditions. I haven't been so I can't confirm, but I am certainly wary and can imagine conditions being "better" when we get some deep dumps of snow up there. Anyhow, it is good to hear that conditions are good enough for the resort to open the Number 1 quad lift for the firsdt time this season. The course on the way down to the quad is very narrow in places, but good to see that lift moving.

Guests are still taken from the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway to the top of the Kagura Gondola by shuttle bus which is open from 8:30am until 5pm.

Tashiro is planning to open on the 12th December.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning it has started just cloudy in Yuzawa. The mountains are visible this morning and that snowline has moved ever so slightly down the hill since yesterday. It's looking sunny up at Kagura which has benefited more from the snow at higher levels yesterday. They are opening up the quad lift this morning for the firsrt time this season.

There's snow up at Gala Yuzawa now as well so that one course they have open for their "pre-open" season will be a snowy one this morning.

Looking forward, after a few days of mixed weather, the forecast for Sunday is looking the most promising right now with a chance of some "heavy snow" on the menu for then. We shall see.

As a reminded, here's when the resorts in Yuzawa plan to open - all depending on the snow of course:

12th December:
Gala Yuzawa (proper opening)
Kagura Tashiro
Yuzawa Kogen

18th December:
Nakazato Snow Wood
Kandatsu Kogen

19th December:
Kayama Captain Coast
Ludens Yuzawa
NASPA Ski Garden
Yuzawa Nakazato
Yuzawa Park

23rd December:
Ipponsugi

In neighbouring Minamiuonuma, here are the planned opening dates for the resorts:

12th December:
Joetsu Kokusai

19th December:
Ishiuchi Maruyama
Muikamachi Ski Resort (previously Minami)
Muikamachi Hakkaisan
Centleisure Maiko
Mt Grandview

23rd December:

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cloudy morning with nothing falling from the sky at the moment. The trees up at the top of the mountain are looking nice and frosted and there was probably a few cm more snow up there yesterday though it was wet down in the village.

The forecast for Sunday is looking promising and looks like we can expect snow down to the bottom of the mountain and perhaps a fair amount up top then. Fingers crossed everyone!   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 9:30am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cold morning and cloudy at the time of writing. There has been some new snowfall yesterday, perhaps just 10cm or so in places, and the mountain is looking all frosted early on. This afternoon it will perhaps clear up with sunny weather forecast. It also seems that it will become milder in the next few days before getting colder again on Saturday with a chance of snow on Sunday.

Some good news this morning. Part of the Chuo course is open from today with the Chuo Number 1 lift operating. Just a small part of the resort but good to see some movement!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 9:35am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is out this morning and there are some fine blue skies especially looking south towards Yokoteyama. It's a beautiful morning in Shiga Kogen.

The snow remains on the ground and on the roads up there and it is keeping cold which is a good thing of course.

Temperatures should remain below freezing point into next week with snow probably appearing on Thursday night and then Saturday with the most juicy prospects for snow being Sunday when it looks like we might be in for the snowfall we are all waiting for.

Meanwhile, lift operations in the region remain the same as yesterday.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Clear blue skies today here in Hakuba.

A cold night with no clouds was quite chilly and thus some of the resorts were busy blasting the snow machines. With any luck these will create a good base to build on. Most likely the first turns will be on a man-made/natural base but at this stage we are happy with any skiing at all!

As soon as more snow comes and the resorts set up their runs we will be there with the reports.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 10:42am
Weather conditions: Scattered light clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday's snow amounted to... basically nothing at base level. There was a clear band of fresh snow on the trees from about 1300 to 2000 meters, but nothing to start building up a base for sliding on. It was cold overnight, however, with the first real hard frost this season.

It is a beautiful sunny morning, if you like sun and no snow. Your forecast for Tuesday is sunny; tomorrow will be cloudy and hopefully a little colder. But there doesn't seem to be much chance of snow until later in the week.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 11:09am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow continued all yesterday and through until 8am this morning. Then the day welcomed itself with a beautiful blue sky. There has been 10cm of fresh snow since yesterday in the village and a lot more on the mountain. This snow is really high quality powder - very very light - which makes shovelling the stuff effortless. Those up on the mountain this morning were able to put down some nice freshies. Another lift opened this morning - Prince Romance lift - the bottom most lift, offering good terrain for beginners.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 8th December 2009, 11:31am
Weather conditions: overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It continued to snow throughout yesterday, adding about another 15-20cm in the village since last report. Showers are expected at times today, remaining overcast as the day wears on. The current temperature is a modest -1 at the village level.

Recently, although the Ace #2 and Hirafu Gondola have been running, the terrain below them has been inaccessible to mountain-goers. However, riders have been seen coming down the front-side all the way down to the Ace Quad. Not too sure whether they're ducking ropes or not, at this stage.

Niseko Village has opened up for the first time this season today, and according to reliable sources the case will be the same there; you will have to take the gondola back down the mountain.
