Mostly cloudy - clearing up?
Good morning from Yuzawa on this last day of the season for the Iwappara ski resort in Yuzawa and the Ishiuchi Maruyama, Maiko Snow Resort and Joetsu Kokusai resorts in neighbouring Minamiuonuma.
We were hoping that there might be a chance of some light snow this morning. So how did that go?
2cm of fresh snow is being reported by the higher Kagura resort.
And 5cm is being reported by Maiko Snow Resort.
We can probably expect somewhere around at other higher elevations around Yuzawa.
Around town, it's more like just a dusting - none in some places a more in others, but I am going to be generous and add 1cm to the report today.
As well as GALA Yuzawa, the images today (below) are from the Yuzawa IC exit of Route 17 in Yuzawa and the webcam from Route 17 between the Tashiro Ropeway and Naeba (labelled as Mikuni Route 17 on the Webcam page). You can see that dusting in town as well as more on the road on the way up to Naeba.
Rain / sleet / light snow had been falling in various parts of the area early on but I just went outside and there was nothing falling... and it looks like there is increasing blue sky appearing to the north. Perhaps we might enjoy some clearer weather as the day progresses?
It's keeping relatively cold though so if you plan to go out get wrapped up and enjoy!
From tomorrow (Monday), only Kagura, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu Kogen will remain open daily - with Naeba planning to open up on weekends.
Daily reports on Yuzawa Now will continue until Sunday 6th May and a weekly update beyond that until the lifts come to a halt at Kagura.

Geto Kogen Now!
Sunday 8th April 2018, 7:35am
Good morning from Geto.
An unsettled mix of fine weather, rain and snow yesterday in the region, though there's no new cm to add this morning.
This morning it is fine with a lot of cloud and just a gentle wind. A chance of rain later on if the forecasts are to be believed.
Those events continue today.
Official snow depths:
Top: 320cm Base: 200cm (not sure what that increased since yesterday!)
Number 1 Gondola and Number 1 pair lift are operating Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Sunday 8th April 2018, 7:48am
Cloud, blue sky
Good morning from Nozawa.
Reports of snow and indeed sightings of snow! :)
I have just come back from a walk around the base of the resort. A lovely brisk early Sunday morning walk, and fairly chilly conditions as well. Nice. I also notice the resort have uploaded a photo from the ski jump area near base - see below for that.
There's not a huge amount of snow of course, but it is always great to see fresh on the ground. Love it. The resort itself is recording 5cm at the top Yamabiko area of the resort and no other numbers, but I would be mistaken not to log at least 1cm this morning from the snow we got by base.
So, that reported 5cm up top should provide some nicely improved conditions first thing this morning and early tracks should be rewarded.
Temperatures will probably start rising once again from tomorrow.
Sunday 8th April 2018
Fresh snowfall since yesterday (as and where reported by the resort):
- Nagasaka Gondola - Yamabiko Four - Yamabiko Number 2 Four - Uenotaira Four - Paradise Four
The following courses remain open:
- Yamabiko area - Kokenashi course - Uenotaira - Paradise - Bunabayashi - Challenge - Schneider (part?) - Utopia A - Rinkan (use this course to get back down to base) - Rinkan short cut
- Get back to base via the Rinkan course or using the Gondola
General resort operations information until Sunday 6th May:
The Gondola will be open from 8:10am daily; The Number 1 car park will be free daily; There will be no village shuttle bus between 2nd April and 27th April; A resort shuttle bus may operate between Hikage and Nagasaka (Number 1 car park) depending on snow conditions; Nozawa Onsen plans to remain open until Sunday 6th May. Let's quickly get past the wind of yesterday and report -- we have decent snowfall in Hakuba this Sunday morning, folks. :)
Check this out, headlines first. This is how much snow the resorts are reporting:
Hakuba Happo-one: 25cm at Gondola top station Hakuba Goryu: 10cm (base); 30cm (top) Hakuba 47: 10cm (base); 20cm (top) - they are reporting close on 20cm in some areas near base Tsugaike Kogen: they have increased their upper official snow depth by 30cm
We are reporting 8-10cm from base areas.
There's snow along the side of the roads and everywhere is looking 'winter' once again.
Bottom line? It should be a particularly exciting April morning and people who are hear absolutely need to get their gear on and check it out.
And that is all for today. I hope you can enjoy it. I am going to.
(Fingers crossed wind isn't a factor today but it looks like it might be at Happo and Tsugaike at the start of the day. Best to check directly with the resorts if you plan to be out).
See you tomorrow!
The four ski resorts that remain open all plan to remain at least part open until Sunday 6th May
Ski resort information on Sunday 8th April 2018 (at time of writing):
- Upper areas of the resort remain open - *** Some lifts possibly affected by wind early on - You can still ride back down to Nakiyama South or Shirakaba South (Gondola) base - Other base areas are now closed
Lotte Arai Resort: 336cm, 2.5°; Zendana lift and Arai Gondola open for sure, others pending; Mamushigaeshi, Exciter, Legendary, Discovery and Rindou Lower courses closed; Funaishi-zawa, Happy Place and Benzaku-zawa open in the avalanche-controlled areas open; closing May 6
And it really is a good one, with a chunk of fresh snow to report. (Not sure chunk is a good word to use, but I'll leave it in there. Good word, chunk. Reminds me of chocolate).
Anyway it almost feels like proper winter again this morning.
It is fantastic to see a covering of snow on the ground and I will very much enjoy scooping it off the top of my car once I get this report up. I'm thinking of ice cream now.
But seriously, it actually looks pretty decent quality too and not heavy wet stuff. Hurray!
So yes a nice surprise of a morning and it will be fun to see how much snow has fallen at higher elevations up there at the top areas of the resorts. One of my secret agents with possibly reliable inside info is telling me saying 8cm or so, perhaps even a little more.
Looking ahead to the coming week there's a mix of weather on there including some clearer weather and some rain with perhaps more snow higher up. Which would be nice. (The snow bit).
Update just before report is posted - looks like the Hirafu Gondola has a technical issue and will be delayed opening.
Today is of course the last day of the season for the Niseko Hanazono and Niseko Village areas of the mountain.
But not to fear! Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri will remain open and I will be posting daily reports every day through until Sunday 6th May.
Sunday 8th April 2018
Resort specific information (operations subject to change):
- Ace Family quad - Ace Number 2 Center Four - Holiday Number 1 - Hirafu Gondola - Swinging Monkey - King Number 3 - King Number 4 - Hanazono Number 1 quad - Hanazono Number 2 quad - Hanazono Number 3 quad
Yes, things are looking mid-winter once again this morning. Official reports of 5-10cm from around places and I can vouch for 6cm of that myself. And as we approach 9am the sun is out though light snow still falls - and everything is looking beautiful and clean white once again.
It's not deep of course but certainly the slopes should be enjoying a nice refresh too and worth checking out. There seems to be a chance of light snow on and off into tomorrow too.
I'm off out to enjoy it.
The section of Route 292 between Shiga Kogen and Kusatsu is still closed with a planned re-opening at 10am on Friday 20th April.
