Snow and weather reports posted on Saturday 16th December 2017

Myoko Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 8:52am
Weather conditions: Clear/high thin clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's always a good feeling (and not that common) when your predictions actually turn out to be true, but after yesterday's am report it really did start to get colder, and the rain turned to snow. At base level we're enjoying the sight of about 3 cm of snow on the ground, a very white band across the trees (that almost perfectly aligns with the lifts) and even a party clear sky.

Drivers will want to be careful in the area, though; it was mild yesterday but turned cold overnight, so it's hockey rink conditions on some of the streets this morning. If you don't have snow tires, don't bother coming (as much as we'd like to see you). If you do have snow tires, take the shallow, long approach from Toyohashi signal, rather than the straight up (and especially, straight down) from Taguchi intersection straight up to Akakura Kanko. Don't even think about going up to Seki today!

The official (planned) openings for the ski areas are:

Akakura Kanko Ski Area (Akakan): December 17
Akakura Onsen Ski Area: mid-December
Ikenotaira Ski Area: December 17
Myoko Suginohara: December 23
Madarao Kogen Ski Area: Pre-open December 10-11; full open December 16
Seki Onsen Ski Area: no official date posted for this year (December 1 last season)
Tangram Madarao: December 17

These dates are when they officially open, of course; if there's no snow, they won't be opening; if there's heavy snow, many will open earlier. We'll keep you posted!

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 9:08am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was the one of the coldest nights last night of this season, and it is a beautiful sunny morning early on today. Feeling more like winter as well when you wake up in the morning and have to scrape your windshield.

It seems like the snow line hasn't changed that much this morning, but looked a bit more white. Good news is, starting on Friday, the temperature drops down and looks like we are gonna get some snow! We'll just have to see how much it brings with it.

Resorts opening days should now be right around the corner. Get your shred stick and ski ready, check your snow tires on, and pray for snow!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 9:08am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fair
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
So we got a thin covering of snow yesterday. This morning not much more than a frost to report, and the clouds are clearing in places and it's quite bright. It might turn out to be a fine day today, but it should stay in the negative temperatures.

Snow looks to be expected on Thursday along with temperatures getting real cold around Friday into the weekend.

Lifts and runs open remain the same - very limited and not much snow at all yet, remember. Still early though. :)

One thing I haven't mentioned yet is that from this season the gate system at the ski lifts here in Shiga Kogen has changed. Where they used to be an IC Card there is now a Key Card. A 500 yen returnable deposit is still required. Amongst other things, with this new card you can login online later and see a record of your days skiing - how many lifts you got on, how far you skied or boarded etc. Pretty cool actually. This new system has also allowed Shiga Kogen to offer some new tickets this season including a 2 and 4 hour ticket. See the Shiga Kogen information in the Resort Spotlight section for more details.

Official snow depths [6th Dec 11]:
Takamagahara Mammoth - 20cm
Ichinose Family - 20cm
Kumanoyu - 25cm
Yakebitaiyama - 30cm

Resorts part open [6th Dec 11]:
Takamagahara Mammoth - one triple lift
Ichinose Family - one pair lift
Kumanoyu - two pair lifts
Yakebitaiyama - one pair lift   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Cloudy and snowing
New snowfall: 8cm
Snow depth: 90cm
The falling snow just seems to continue here in Furano. There was a lull last night but this morning it has started up again, and flakes the size of a coin are currently falling out of the sky. The good news today is more of the mountain in the Furano Zone has been opened up, meaning a greater variety of runs and simply more opportunity to ride this beautiful powder we are getting. The runs open are: Sailer, Shirakaba, Romance, Spies, Prince, Todomatsu and Ropeway.    Read more ...

Zao Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 9:21am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The good news is that the lower slopes now once again have a bit of a white covering - if not patchy. Yesterday there were a few cm of fresh snow in the village and the resort was reporting 10cm of snow... so we still of course need more for things to open up.

So the resort remains on standby and will open as soon as is possible. When that will be is anyones guess still - it looks like we might get more snow on Thursday and Friday, but as the forecast stands probably that will not be enough to get things going and we may well need to wait longer.

This morning the temperature in the village is hovering around 0 degrees and the upper parts of the mountain are covered in cloud.

Whether the resort opens or not, on this coming Saturday at 11am on the Uwanodai course area there will be a formal "Opening Ceremony". Too add to the possible confusion, the runs will open before then if there is enough snow! So it's just a formality really - but one where you might get some free food if you attend... hurray! Fingers crossed that the resort will actually be able to open then.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 9:42am
Weather conditions: heavy cloud with patches of blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Big day for the white stuff yesterday - blizzard like conditions through midday with wind severely reducing visibility and suspending lift operations.

By early evening the wind had died down and the snow remained fairly constant, falling as very dry powder.

It is a beautiful still morning today with almost no wind, a nice amount of fairly light fresh overnight snow on the cars and roofs and the cloud breaking regularly to blue skies.

No fresh snowfall as of time of writing but the forecast is for more possibly blizzard like conditions later on this afternoon.

Currently a number of lifts are suspended, see below for a detailed breakdown of each resort.

Current lift operations at time of writing (subject to change depending on conditions)

Hirafu:
Hirafu family pair running, Ace Quad, Ace Pair 3 and Hooded pair 3 on standby

Annupuri:
Gondola, jumbo pair and Annupuri Pair 3 running. Pair 2 on standby

Niseko Village:
Banzai and Community chair

Hanazono:
Hanazono plans to open on 10th December.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 9:48am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not much to report this morning really. The snow line has kept at around the same place as yesterday though reports of a few more cm on the upper slopes of the mountain. They all count at this early pre-season stage!

Today looks like it will be a fairly settled day weather wise. Cloudy but quite bright with a high of around 5 degrees in the village.

You want snow? Look to Thursday into Friday as temperatures drop again and we have a really cold snap. Enough to open on Saturday? We will only be able to tell you that on Friday. Fingers crossed.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 10:13am
Weather conditions: Cloud, bright
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a sprinkling of snow overnight, after getting up to 10cm the night before, so the runs up at Kagura are looking healthier than they were on Sunday. Still not a whole lot of snow though really even though the resort is saying they have 40cm.

The lower slopes of Naeba also have a thin white coat this morning

It's a cloudy start to the day here but cold and apparently -7 degrees up top. Brrrr.

The forecast tells me we can expect snow on Thursday and into Friday when it will get very cold - minus double figure cold.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 16:56pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bit of snow on the mountainsides around town this morning but not down that far and just a sprinkling really. Today has been generally just a cloudy day but the sun has made an appearance or two from time to time. It hasn't felt cold really and a high of around 7 degrees earlier on this afternoon.

Thursday night into Friday is looking like a good bet for some snow to fall down to town level and for it get really cold as well.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 6th December 2011, 17:48pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Grey skies in Minakami today but the cloud had lifted to show the white on the mountains. The snow from the last couple of days dropped about 20 cms up at Tenjin and left the scenery up high looking pretty impressive. It is cold right now and it looks as if these temperatures are going to be here for a while from next week.

Everywhere is still closed but Tenjin are getting close. Everywhere else needs the snow to come down a bit further.   Read more ...
