Hello everyone from here in Hirafu... and I'm actually quite excited this morning.
Last night the snow started to fall once again and this morning there's 11cm of it outside my place with more snowy conditions forecast for the day today, with it easing off by early tomorrow morning.
Without giving too much away, once the new SnowJapan updates go online it will be very easy for you to compare snowfall in recent seasons. Last season it looks like it was the later part of November before we got any proper numbers, so we are enjoying a positive start this season. Let's hope it continues that way.
I have literally spent hours playing around with the new stuff that the SnowJapan guys have cooked up for this season. It is really is very interesting and I am sure Niseko Now readers will like it. I'll try not to think how important the daily "new snowfall" number is when I post my reports. Of course, you can be sure that there'll never be any over-reporting from me. Oh no! All being well, we'll get masses of snow anyway...
We are now less than 3 weeks away from the first ski lifts opening in Niseko. Below are the planned dates for the four main resorts:
Niseko Grand Hirafu: Wednesday 23rd November 2016 until Sunday 7th May 2017 Niseko Annupuri: Saturday 26th November 2016 until Sunday 7th May 2017 Niseko Hanazono: Saturday 3rd December 2016 until Sunday 2nd April 2017 Niseko Village: Thursday 1st December 2016 until Sunday 2nd April 2017
Night skiing is planned from Saturday 10th December until Monday 20th March 2017 at the Annupuri, Grand Hirafu and Village resort areas. Read more ...

Clear blue skies
Welcome back to the 'Yuzawa Now' reports on SnowJapan.
After a predictably hot summer, temperatures have really dropped over the last few weeks and it is positively chilly at times now - including early this morning, when temperatures were down to around 4C in town.
The first snow of the season has also been spotted... first up on the higher areas of Kagura a number of days ago, and yesterday we could see snow on the top areas of the Makihata and Hakkai-san mountains in Minamiuonuma. It will be a while before the snow reaches down here to town and before most ski resorts open of course, but it always great to see the first snow of the season.
Let's hope we are going to be treated to a season of heavy (but light!) and consistent snow this coming season.
This morning there are clear blue skies all around. It really is a beautiful morning.
The first ski lifts to move will of course be at the Kagura resort (via Mitsumata Ropeway), which plans to open this year on Saturday 19th November. So if all things go well, we are only two weeks from the start of the season!
Most of the resorts in Yuzawa open in the second half of December. We will bring you details on the planned opening dates soon.
Another report next week.
SnowJapan.com will be getting some major updates in the coming days. We've been working on these updates since the beginning of 2016, with both the ski resort section and the Now daily reports section getting complete overhauls. There is a lot of new information and (we hope) interesting data to enjoy. Keep an eye on the News section of the site for updates. Read more ...
