Minakami Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 4:50am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 75cm
Spent the day on the mountain and all the open pistes have plenty of snow on them. Should only need a little more for the steep run off the top lift as it looks pretty good to go with plenty of tracks down it.

A clear day earlier has given way to light snow up top, light rain at the base and temps up top have been quite cold all day. Hopefully the snow falling now up there gets a lot heavier.

Forecast wise, things are now looking quite promising. At the mid level of Tenjindaira its supposed to be temps below zero and snow or cloud from here through the next 6 days. Could this be the dawn of Winter 2016?

All snow resorts in Minakami are now at least part open:

Minakami Hodaigi

Kiroro Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 7:57am
Weather conditions: Thick clouds
New snowfall: 14cm
Snow depth: 147cm
There is a bit more snow this morning at Kiroro. The official measurement is 14cm at the base and 17cm at the peak. However the strong winds have been moving snow around, filling in sheltered spots (hence why the photo shows 18cm). It is currently snowing reasonably hard so that total will continue to rise throughout the day.

Temperatures have dropped again, with a low of -14°C reported at the peak. 54km/h WNW winds add some considerable wind chill to that, so wrap up warm.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 10cm
Snow depth: 110cm
Greetings from Niseko and this morning I have 10cm of fresh snow to report from my base here in Hirafu.

I have been talking about 'lots of snowfall on the forecast over the next week' for a few days now I recall, but so far over the last few days it has been somewhat modest deliveries rather than blizzard snowstorms depositing huge amounts of deep. Still, we'll happily take it.

The updated forecast still has regular snowfall on it right through until at least the end of the weekend. Just how much snow actually falls I suppose we will have to just wait and see. As well as regular snowfall, it's also very likely to keep cold and maybe some stronger winds at times.

Oh yes, talking about those strong winds. They're here this morning and stopping some lifts from moving - the situation at the time of writing has been added below. Fingers crossed the affected lifts will be able to start during the day. Wind is expected to get less later on but still might cause problems. Check with the resorts.

Other than that, it is continuing to snow lightly again this morning and mostly rather grey and cloudy, current temperature of -5C.

---

For those who didn't see the news in my report yesterday --- one lucky person plus two friends is going to be winning and enjoying a very nice full day private tour here in Niseko. For more information and how you can enter, please check out the SnowJapan Facebook page here. Good luck!

---

And congratulations to SnowJapan for starting up two new daily report sections as well. When I am not writing Niseko Now, every day I read through the other reports even if I am not going to those places (well, not just now anyway). It's always interesting to see how the season is shaping up in different areas of Japan, although it makes for some difficult reading just at the moment with the snow not arriving in expected quantities in some areas.

So, welcome to the 'Appi Kogen Now' and 'Grandeco Now' reports. You can of course find all of the SnowJapan 'Now' reports here:

Appi Kogen Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 9:03am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy with some sun breaking through
New snowfall: 5cm
Snow depth: 40cm
What should have been a mostly sunny day yesterday pleasantly turned in to a steady light snowfall day with 5cm of accumulation during the day and overnight.

With the temperatures now dropping steadily we’re hoping for a continued steady accumulation the rest of the week and with the forecast of heavy snowfall on Wednesday Appi may decide to open more runs this coming weekend, fingers crossed!

Blustery conditions on the mountain are making for awfully cold -20 wind-chill temperatures but the wind should die down later in the week making the mountain a little more welcoming. Today we’re expecting intermittent snowfall with mostly cloudy and gusty wind conditions, temperatures ranging from a high of -5 to a low of -10.

Still only 8 of 21 runs in operation with the gusty conditions affecting the only sailor run in operation because of the start/stop nature of the gondola. Hopefully the rest of the week will see decreasing winds and a steady rise in snowfall.

Currently operating lifts:

- Appi Gondola
- Central Number 1 quad
- Number 2 lift A
- Number 2 lift B
- Number 3 lift B
- Number 4 lift

Grandeco Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 9:05am
Weather conditions: Cloudy skies
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 120cm
Just a slight dusting of snow to report. Very fine snow started falling from early morning and we are expecting (and very much hoping) for snow to be falling through the day today.

This morning it has started getting colder and temperatures are forecast to drop further tonight and then some decent snowfall is expected tomorrow. A return to winter?

The rain yesterday did no favours to the snow conditions so a little hard this morning.

The roads around the area are icy and slippery this morning - take careful!

Just some information on nearby resorts:

The three ski resorts in Ura Bandai (Grandeco, Nekoma, Ura Bandai) are all open. The areas to the south of Mt Bandai (Inawashiro and Bantai town) are not having it as good... Inawashiro & Minero ski areas will be closed between 4-8 Jan and Inawashiro Resort ski area closed from today. Alts Bandai ski remains open but there is just 10cm snow depth at the base and you need to take lifts to get up to No.4 lift.

This is not what we all expect for the time of the year, and everyone is hoping for a big change soon.

The forecast is good for snow over the coming week. Fingers crossed.

Lifts operating:

Gondola
Number 1 quad
Number 2 quad
Number 3 quad

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 9:05am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy, bit of sun
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 35cm
Good morning from Hakuba.

(Snow news coming soon -- promise!!)

This morning it is generally cloudy, though there is some blue sky in places and the sun breaking through. Hakuba 47 were a bit earlier reporting light snow falling higher up on the mountain though I expect that will have cleared now. Feels kind of hazy in places.

There's still a bit of spring-like southerly wind gusting about and some lifts at Hakuba Goryu and 47 are operating but maybe slower than usual. It is good to see Happo-one able to open from early on this morning as well.

Resorts still having to deal with insufficient snowfall especially on lower areas. Unfortunately Hakuba Cortina this morning are stopping their Number 1 and Number 6 pair lifts (which were open) due to the snow situation. For Hakuba Cortina to be lacking snow is saying something - they are usually enjoying being dumped on in style. (Very hopefully that will be happening before long). Tsugaike have a few lifts resting as well now from this morning on lower slope areas.

Having to talk about 'scaling down' open areas at resorts feels more like late season April than early January.

Sorry, I really don't want to have to say these things. I truly love Hakuba and I want to see it enjoying the snow it deserves and expects and for the people visiting to be able to enjoy that.

So when are going to get some relief? Well, the good news is that relief does seem to be on the way. For a start it should be gradually getting colder over the next few days which is a good start. We may get a bit of snow overnight tonight, though wouldn't expect too much, and from Thursday onwards we can expect more, particular as we enter the weekend.

Let us pray!

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 45cm
Morning from Yuzawa.

It was another fine spring like day yesterday with at time hazy skies, sunshine and a high of just over 11 degrees in Yuzawa town. (!)

Clouds started forming in the late afternoon and later on it was raining. Just how much I am not sure and perhaps I don't want to know!

This morning it was raining early on, but that has now eased off. There is more cloud around today and the sun is making an appearance as well. As of 9am it is 3C degrees. Rain is actually on the local forecast at times during the day but for the moment it looks like those clouds are tracking to the north of the valley here and we can expect more sun than rain.

There is a chance of some light snowfall overnight tonight and for tomorrow during the day generally cloudy conditions are forecast.

The most interesting part of the forecast is later in the week - decent snowfall as we enter the weekend? Let's hope so. Snow is due as well as a return to something more like normal winter temperatures as well.

As I said yesterday: with the lack of fresh snow, warm temperatures and rain... all of that is affecting the snow that we do have on the ground. It depends on where you are of course, but generally lower areas are now increasingly 'patchy' with ground visible in some places and things still sticking up out of the snow. These things should really be buried in deep snow by now.

Unfortunately, some resorts are having to scale back with more courses closing due to the snow conditions. It's a situation that is changing during a day even and so almost impossible to keep a track of with every resort, so if you are planning on being in the area I suggest you check with the official websites of the resorts for the latest.

Hopefully of course that will soon not be a concern. For now though, higher resort areas have more snow and are enjoying the better snow cover.

---

Resort official snow depths (Tuesday 5th January 2016) and any specific news:

All resorts in the area are now generally open for the season, though please note that some areas and courses are not open. Generally steeper slopes that need more snow are still closed. The lack of fresh snow and warm conditions over the last few days also means that some lower areas are getting increasingly patchy.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 9:14am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 35cm
Milder conditions remain here for the moment. The resort has reported 1cm of snow on the upper runs but it was wetter down here in the village. Still we are dry now and perhaps it'll be a generally cloudy day. There are some signs of breaks in the cloud so it might even get clearer. For right now though the webcam images from the top runs show very limited visibility. Not sure if that is just cloud or fog...

Let's look at the forecast again this morning. Fresh snow does look like it is on the way. Perhaps a dusting tonight, them more on Thursday and then right now Friday night into Saturday is looking particularly interesting. 'Heavy snow' sounds good, doesn't it? It's just what we need. This weekend please!

While the milder temps might persist a day or so longer, it should be getting much colder come the weekend.

This weekend has a lot to live up to!

Unfortunately the Skyline course as well as a few more have now had to close again - snow is just too thin on the ground on the lower areas of the resort. Updated details below. Better conditions and snow cover can be found on the higher areas of the resort.

Madarao Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 9:51am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun mix
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 70cm
A mix of cloud and sun early this morning making for a very pretty sight.

Not as beautiful as large amount of fresh powder of course... ;)

No new snow to report as expected but the forecast is still good for snow by the end of the week - and hopefully a lot of it. Thursday-Saturday is the all important period. It should be winter-like cold as well so you'll need more than you're t-shirt.

Some areas of the resort are looking decidedly patchy now (as you can see on the webcam photo this morning).

Myoko Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 10:04am
Weather conditions: Heavy fog
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 80cm
I'd like to have good news for you. I really don't, except that by waiting for the town ski area report (which doesn't come out until nearly 10am) the wind has turned to the north. As predicted, the freezing line is coming down the mountain, meaning colder temperatures. This also means the return of the thick fog we had earlier this morning.

There is also the possibility of some snow ahead, leading to possible heavy stuff around Saturday. We really need it; some of the reas are marking off sections where there's just too much dirt or grass showing, although most places remain largely open. Yesterday's wind and high temps really brought snow levels down here at the base....

We remain hopeful! But realistic, too - the whole country is seeing bad weather and rain today, and good snow is definitely in the future.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 10:20am
Weather conditions: Mostly clear and sunny
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 30cm
A dusting of snow overnight but no new cm to report.

Rather than keeping going we have more sunshine this morning over Shiga Kogen. Some are saying a chance of snow today, perhaps later on or tonight? For now though it feels like if anything it's going to clear up and be a fine day again.

We are definitely heading back to colder conditions though over the next run of few days with snow expected on Thursday and then really low mid-winter like temps as we get into Saturday with perhaps heavy snow as well. Who wants some of that then? ;)

For now though we are still seeing resorts somewhat struggle and try to do their best with the amount of snow we currently have. Still us being high up here we are doing better than some places lower down in the valley.

Snow Gods. Help us please!

Zao Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 10:32am
Weather conditions: Cloud and fog
New snowfall: 1cm
Snow depth: 70cm
Morning from Zao and it feels more like winter this morning, though we still have some way to go.

Snow is falling and it's generally quite poor visibility out there. It's colder too with temperatures now back down all under zero where they should be.

The forecast has more snow today - though don't expect much - and then maybe more around Thursday. A cold snowy winter storm is due at the end of the week and over the weekend.

I'm sure people who plan on visiting this weekend won't mind me hoping that they'll be experiencing heavy snow...!

Information as of Tuesday 5th January 2016 (subject to change)

Most of the lifts at Zao Onsen are now operating.

Furano Now!

Tuesday 5th January 2016, 15:33pm
Weather conditions: Snow clouds all day. Did get bright and bluish a few times but never cleared of snowclouds.
New snowfall: 30cm
Snow depth: 235cm
Had great skiing today with a little person and found excellent powder on every run. On me (a tall person) it was thigh deep to knee deep, on my pint sized companion it was waist deep. Twice she lost her skis in it which made for some digging adventures but we found them. She loves side country!

It snowed all day and possibly all last night. Even where it was groomed overnight there was between 10cm and 30ish cm on top at 9.30am.

No wind today although we did experience one gust - it lasted less than a minute, we just stopped and let it go by.

It was -7C in Kitanomine this morning, now around -5C.

This snow last night and today is light and dry. I think we are back on track with normal Furano dry snow and it's good and cold.

When I left this morning my neighbour was clearing about 15cm or so of fresh snow from the driveway. When I got home this afternoon, you almost couldn't even tell he'd done it.

Photo is a little person on the piste this morning. You can see how one might lose one's skis,   Read more ...
