Well, yesterday turned out to be a fine day out there - and quite a fair bit of fresh snowfall up there on the resort slopes as well. 10cm, and no doubt double that in places.... snow down to village level. It was like, is it really 3rd May?! Sorry for repeating myself but what a great bonus to be given. I don't think I'd advise people to plan their ski trip for May, but for those of us who are here...!
Anyway this morning slightly less cold, and it's mostly cloudy conditions to start the day off. Earlier fog seems to be causing less problems now. It doesn't look like we will be seeing much of the sun this Golden Week, with clearer skies forecast from Tuesday onwards.

It's sunnier today (the sun was pretty elusive yesterday; it was sunny all day at Lake Nojiri, just to the southeast, but typically gloomy in Akakura).
It's still cold - though good for the snow, not really what you want for a Golden Week.
Looks like the temps will continue to rise from tomorrow, though, so everyone who is enjoying a vacation through Monday has something to look forward to.

Fine, some cloud
After a chilly overnight here in Hakuba, it has warmed up quite quickly and was just over 10C as of 9am. Are temperatures finally going to start getting back to something like normal for the season? Well, the forecast has us down for a high of around 14 degrees today, so still not very warm -- but on an upwards trend perhaps. We can expect more of the sun in the coming days now into next week, so there should be no rain to worry about for the 'rest of the season'!
Cloud around the mountains again this morning but lots of blue sky as well. Should be a fine few days, expect lots of other fellow skiers and snowboarders out there enjoying their last few slides.

Similar conditions are on the forecast for the last two days of the season as well.

We've had such an unusually cold and snowy Spring this year that the mountain is still in excellent condition this deep into May. Furano Ski Resort has announced that they are extending the ski season to include next weekend! Normally the mountain shuts down after Golden Week, but this year they will close as scheduled for the 7th-10th and then open up the lifts for the last runs of the season on Saturday and Sunday (May 11th, 12th.)
There's still 120cm of snow on the slopes (60cm at the foot of the mountain), and it snowed all the way down in the village Thursday night. It's not exactly the high quality powder for which Furano is famous, but it is still very skiable. More snow is in the forecast for the higher elevations for today and tomorrow as well, as Winter slowly gives over to Spring. It's currently 7 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. It should stay cloudy and cool until tomorrow evening, when we get a chance for some precipitation. It will most likely be snow on the mountain, rain in the village. Read more ...
