Minakami Now!

Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
And the snow keeps falling. Not as much as yesterday but a good few centimetres down in the valley this morning and it is really light and dry.

Yesterday was a great day up in the resorts. A few centimetres of fresh snow lying on the groomed trails which made for super-smooth runs and then boot deep, light powder everywhere else. The quality of the snow is fantastic for March and is up there with some of the best of the season.

The snow is supposed to continue all day today and then clear up a bit tomorrow. There is the possibility of the snow continuing after the weekend too.   Read more ...

Madarao Now!

Friday 4th March 2011, 8:16am
Weather conditions: Heavy snowfall
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a full day of heavy and continual snowfall yesterday, today's powder conditions will top yesterday's! Overnight the resort received a fresh top up of 30cm to it's already fantastic coverage, while around 10cm more is expected throughout the course of today.

Visibility conditions are quite poor as continual snowfall is predicted, with strong winds expected across the mountain. At current the temperature is sitting at -8.0 C and is to remain in the late minuses for the day.

Overall an awesome day ahead for all riders as the powder is not scarcen now; an extra layer and a good pair of goggles will help see you through the day comfortably.

Clearer conditions and maybe even the sun making an appearance are forecast for the weekend along with milder temperatures and so it should be a good one with these renewed quality snow conditions.

This Sunday is the first day of the Madarao Speed Challenge event, held on the 6th, 13th and 20th of this month.

More great news this morning as the snow continues.

About another 20-30cm again since yesterday evening down in town and up at Kagura they are reporting 40-50cm. (Even though Kagura has pretty much reported 1m of snow in the last 48 hours, the official snow depth for the resort has not changed!)

Stronger winds again high up are affecting Kagura resort with limited lift operations (more on the Naeba Now page soon) but other resorts around town seem to be open as normal this morning.

The snow looks likely to continue all day today but clear up just in time for people arriving for the weekend, so it should be excellent conditions pretty much everywhere again this weekend.

I'll update the page again this evening with the latest for the weekend.

Late update:

It has been snowing for pretty much all the day, heavier at times and a few periods when it seemed like it was going to clear up - but the snow came back.

At the moment small flakes are coming down pretty quickly and the latest evening forecast for tonights weather is another 10-20cm of snow before 9am tomorrow morning. That will be on top of the 10cm or so we have probably seen during the daytime today.

Forecast for tomorrow is for the early snow to clear up, conditions clear up and it get milder than today and then clear weather on Sunday.

Should be a good weekend with this new snow. Hope you have a great one!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

So it was 50cm of new snow in the report yesterday and this morning Kagura is reporting another 40-50cm of fresh snow, with 10-20cm or so of fresh snow at village level. So in the last two days Kagura has seen close on one metre of fresh snow. That's the kind of topup we like!

It goes without saying that conditions out there will be soft, deep, fluffy and... well, excellent.

There's still a wind out there affecting resort operations. From Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura No1 pair lift and from Tashiro Ropeway to the Tashiro No2 pair lift are open this morning. The resort is not going to open the connection between Kagura and Tashiro and will open the Kagura No1 quad, Tashiro No1 quad and Tashiro No8 pair lifts if conditions allow.

Operations are limited at Naeba as well early on and again if conditions allow expect things to open up more.

You might expect the official snow depth to see a big increase for Kagura, given that they have reported a metre of snow - but it is unchanged for some reason. Oh well, believe me the fresh snow is there!

Have a fun weekend, it should be great.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snowfall continues in Shiga Kogen this morning.

Yesterday was an awesome day on the slopes and it's always fantastic to get these conditions in March. Keep it coming please! Snow conditions couldn't really be much better with quiet slopes and tons of fresh snow for the lucky people out there to enjoy.

It is another cold, snowy morning with a moderate wind and poor visibility. Temperatures are down into the minus double digits early on in the morning.

Of course tomorrow is the weekend and so it will be much busier, but there will definitely be enough fluffy snow for everyone to play in. It looks like the conditions will be changing for the weekend as well - clearer conditions, probably the sun, and milder temperatures for the weekend crowd arriving tomorrow.

Snow will be back going into Monday and it actually seems that winter-like conditions will be continuing into next week. Sweet!

Yesterday was indeed a corker with plenty of fresh snow to play in and good weather. It has snowed again overnight leaving a fresh layer of 5cm this time around the village. The mountain has been groomed overnight and has a few centimetres of fresh snow on top of the perfectly smooth grooming underneath. It sure looks good out there at the moment. Temperatures wll stay wintery today and will drop off this evening to a low of around -18deg. There is a light breeze around the base which will increase with elevation, but this wind should reduce by afternoon.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 4th March 2011, 9:24am
Weather conditions: Some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cold weather yesterday and mixed reports; from average to deep and amazing depending on where the respective person went and their level of excitement - we even heard reports of 60cm odd of fresh in the Tsugaike BC which is more than enough for even the most powder-hungry.

So the weather was cold yesterday, the fresh snow is staying in good condition, and today is also holding low temperatures - currently -5 in the valley and -11 at the top of Happo Gondola. We didn't really see any snowfall yesterday just a few flakes, enough only for Goryu to be reporting 5cm of fresh snow on top and 1cm on lower runs. Cortina is the resort reporting the most fresh snow this morning... 20cm.

Winds on the resort at 1400m are measuring as light NNE however up at 2080m winds of 20-30m/s are gusting from the WNW and carry over from this could be expected at altitude on exposed slopes. Visibility is not the best today at altitude.

The upcoming forecast continues to be good with cold temps, some sunny days, and some snow showers all forecast over the week. Tomorrow looks like it should be a fine bluebird day.

Weather conditions: Snowing, but clearing

More snow! It's looking really good out there; nice soft powder, and not the wind overnight that we had yesterday (so less wind-packed, we hope). There has been a little gusting this morning, but not much to worry about; could be more about the high-pressure cell moving in that should bring some sunny conditions the next two days.

Good day to skip work today (so why am I stuck at the desk? Time for some hooky in the afternoon).

Zao Now!

Friday 4th March 2011, 10:19am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's feeling very winter like today and crazy cold, especially for March. In fact it might even be one of the coldest mornings of the season. The thermometer outside, in the village, was showing -12 degrees earlier this morning and up top on the mountain I hear was showing -15 degrees on opening this morning. Cold!

We have another 10-15cm of fresh snow in the village as well which is great - these last few days we have seen fresh layers of snow and so conditions are back to being pretty good out there. The Ice Monsters are keeping in good condition as well which is a big contrast to how things were this time last year. What a great start to March!

This morning there is a fair big of white cloud around but also a fair bit of blue sky on display and the sun making regular appearances from behind the clouds. The clouds are moving really fast at the moment making for quickly changing conditions and some very dramatic scenery on the mountain.

Weather over the weekend? Light snow showers are possible but it looks more like we might just get sun and cloudy conditions along with milder temperatures.

After that it is looking good for more snow to be with us next week.

Should be a great weekend out there, have fun!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 4th March 2011, 11:31am
Weather conditions: Snowing moderately
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's still snowing in Nozawa Onsen.

We have had close to 1 meter fall in the last 48 Hours and was still coming down heavy this morning. The shovels are well and truly back in full swing. It will be another epic day on the Mountain today with about 40cm of fresh snow, cold temps and no crowds.

Amazing what a difference a few days can make with a very wintery feel returning.

Yesterday was nice up top and as good as some of the days we had in January with light bottomless powder on offer.

Down on the lower slopes was a bit heavy going but a magnificent day and looks like more of the same today.

The outlook is very promising indeed, after the sunshine of the weekend we have some heavy snow forecast for next week again. After a warmer February, March is looking like a good month to be in the mountains.

Courses open:

All except the following
Kandahar
Hachiman
Uenotaira Half Pipe
Karasawa Wave Park

Niseko Now!

Friday 4th March 2011, 15:29pm
Weather conditions: Snow showers
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Sorry about the late report but I was up bright and early to get some fresh tracks up on the hill. Yesterday snowed throughout the day and continued into the evening but it then mostly fined up through the night. Today snow fell on and off and the quality is excellent. There's been a lot of wind up high though and the new snow depth varies greatly depending on exposure. On sheltered slopes the snow is up around knee deep. Unfortunately all top gates in Hirafu were closed due to persisting avalanche danger. Going to be very nice when they open though.
This afternoon a bit of sun has broken through the clouds and the winds appear to be dying down so hopefully all gates will be open tomorrow. Tomorrow is expected to be mostly fine but then snow is expected to develop again on Sunday.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 405
Bottom - 200

Niseko Village:
Top - 370
Bottom - 170

Annupuri:
Top - 370
Bottom - 210

Avalanche Information:

The winter weather pattern is weakening and the new snowdrifts formed on top of Mar 1st layer is starting to stabilize. However, the development of snowdrifts has reached up to 80cm in some areas around 800m western Annupuri and the heavy load is yet to be fully stable especially in higher altitude (above1000m). Risk of 60cm surface slab avalanche from Mar 2nd layer is persisting in leeward slopes of Osawa, Backbowl and Mikaeri. The wind has calmed down late at night and a fast, crystal snow is blanketing all slopes in all elevations. It is strongly recommended not to drop into Kozan no sawa (Backbowl) 1200m sidewalls yet today. The leeward slopes, cornice slopes and knolls are still unstable especially above 1100m. Extra caution is required when riding in the backcountry, keep space between each skiers and watch each other’s back. Peak gates are scheduled to open around 11am, please listen to the ski patrol’s instructions and be conscious of the risks and responsibilities of backcountry riding before stepping out of the gates.
Annupuri peak 6am: NW14m/s, -14.1℃. Coastal data: NW9m/s, 2.3m waves. Have a nice day.
