Overcast and snowing
Good morning from Naeba.
Good news everyone. Yesterday's forecast snow has come through and delivered 15cm of fresh snow overnight. It's still falling fairly thickly even now so get out there!
Conditions will be soft and playful potentially for most of the day.
Looking on the forecast is predicting precipitation most days. This is unfortunately predicted to be rain on Sunday and Monday, however, I am not too worried as we have a return to snow on Monday night.
It is a bit colder this morning and I am happy to report that light snow has started falling and there's a dusting of snow on my car outside.
It looks suspiciously like rain on the webcam image below, but I can attest to a more snow-like something falling outside my window. I would not expect it to be light dry powder variety though...
Light snow is what is on the forecasts on and off in the coming days as well really. It will likely be a mix of cloudy conditions and a bit of snow falling from time to time - something like that. Temperatures should be keeping on the right side of zero so that at least is a good thing.
It seems strong winds on mountain are preventing some of the top lifts to start up and a few gondolas may be operating at reduced speed too.
And that is about it really!
There's no Avalanche Report today.
Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day):
Night skiing is planned until Monday 20th March 2017 at the Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village resort areas. There is no nighta in the Hanazono area. Read more ...

Good morning from Yuzawa.
And it is good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning.
Yesterday fairly quickly became a generally 'cloudy/overcast' day with some rain starting in the afternoon. But it turning into snow overnight of course and here are the numbers being reported:
Kagura: 5-10cm Maiko Snow Resort: up to 15cm
I am posting the report from near Ishiuchi this morning and there's just about 1cm here; and 4cm at our Yuzawa measuring point. So expect a light layer on lower slopes by town and something more substantial in higher areas.
It is still snowing now and with clear skies (and warmer conditions again) expected tomorrow, we want as much as possible to fall during the day today... it's forecast to be snowing until evening.
Official snow depth information as of Friday 3rd March 2017

Just like the forecasts said, it's snowing today.
Pretty good fall, too; Niigata's official forecast was for 15cm, and I got a 23cm average after poking around outside. Nice, heavy, spring snow, and it continues to come down at a good rate.
Nice to see things clean and white again, after an afternoon of dirt and gray following the bulldozer in my parking lot (and some of the snow walls collapsing onto the road).
Sunny tomorrow, it says, meaning that's the day to get out there while the snow is still fresh (well, better today to be out in the fresh as it falls).
Light snow started falling higher up around lunch time yesterday though not amounting to much.
But this morning - fresh snow! Yes, it's always good to be able to report fresh snow and this morning while there's just a bit at lower levels, resorts are reporting up to 20cm of fresh snow in places so 'head high' would be the advice this morning.
Can't see much of the mountains at all this morning as they are covered in snow clouds and visibility looks generally rather poor out there. If it means more snow, I'm all for it. But take care if you are venturing out.
Having said that, the forecasts don't seem to be indicating that this snowfall will continue for much longer. Some even showing some sunshine for later on in the day.
Weather for the weekend? Probably sunshine and mild conditions.
Good to see snow lined up on the forecast for early week again though so the snow will be back.

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Friday 3rd March 2017, 8:49am
Morning from Nozawa and we have a fresh layer of snow this morning.
Around 5cm at base but up to 20cm of fresh snow is being reported on the upper Yamabiko and Uenotaira courses... so you know where to head this morning! The snowfall probably won't continue for much beyond lunchtime today, so let's get some more cm in!
We're expecting sunshine and mild conditions tomorrow.
Tomorrow evening there's a big event going on over on the Hikage area. It starts at 7pm with a live act (so I believe) and then there's other things going on like a ski torch lit display and then the fireworks which should begin at around 9pm. No doubt our favourite friendly green vegetable character 'Nasuki' will be making an appearance too. Which in itself will make being there be worth it. :)

It is another mild day, but at least there is some light snowfall happening. The winds are moderate and it is a rather grey looking day with overcast skies. Snow conditions are likely to be firm and frosty after yesterday's melt. The forecast is showing that winds will be at least moderate over the weekend with continuous light snow. Read more ...

It was good to get the clearer weather yesterday morning rather than rain, and then... the snow came. Nice.
This morning the resort is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall and for my report I'm measuring 17cm. It's snowing still and a bit windy at times with windy conditions forecast for the day, so it's getting blown about somewhat. Great to have that layer of fresh though.
Tomorrow clear skies and sunshine are expected across the region along with once-again milder conditions. But if we get a bit more snow before it eases off today, first lifts Saturday morning should be great.
Operating status for the day at Madarao Kogen (at time of report):
- Number 1 lift - Number 2 quad lift - Number 3A lift - Super quad lift - Number 11 lift - Number 12 lift - Number 13 lift - Number 15 lift - Moving walkway - Kids Park - Free Ride Park
Tree runs should be open
- Powder Wave I - Powder Wave II - River Line - Powder Theater - Adventure Aisle - Crystal Bowl - Ninja - Sawa - Rabbit - Kamoshika - Bear
- Nighta at Madarao Kogen is every Saturday until 25th March (and also on 19th March)
After a mild day yesterday, it's a bit colder this morning. There's just a dusting of snow overnight but it is snowing this morning and fingers crossed we might get some cm during the day today.
Tomorrow we're probably going to get some sunshine tomorrow though the forecast does tell us that snow clouds won't be too far away, even if it keeps fairly mild. And indeed as we enter early next week it's looking pretty hopeful for some decent snowfall which would be good.
Difficult to read - we'll just have to see what nature decides to give us.
All lifts apart from the following appear to be operating today:
Paradise Number 3 pair Karamatsu pair
All courses apart from Kotan should be open.
Official snow depths (as published by the resort itself): Summit - 145cm Paradise - 220cm Chuo - 220cm Utopia - 170cm Uwanodai - 130cm Yokokura - 140cm

Appi Kogen Now!

Cloudy skies with some light snow falling
Hello from Appi,
Cloudy skies today with some light snow falling and a temperature outside of -2. We can expect the same conditions most of today with around 2-4 cm of additional snow falling.
Stable temperatures over the weekend of around -5 and some light snow flurries await those venturing up here. For those staying longer than the weekend we may be in for a surprise with up to 50cm supposedly coming our way from Monday to Wednesday. Let keep our fingers crossed that it comes.
Overall the runs are in good shape with very few threadbare patches to annoy you.
Have fun up there.
