Myoko Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 6:47am
Weather conditions: snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The clouds are rolling in with slight snows ready to fall starting this morning. Good fluffy powder toppings for the afternoon in most areas. The temps are staying low, so the powder levels in the higher reaches of Suginohara and Seki Onsen remain high and dry.

Today's pick is Suginohara; it'll only take a few hours to pile the powder on at the top, and the bottom's still in good condition with good viz as well.

Your Myoko area levels for today:
280cm (Akakura Kanko);
285cm (Akakura Onsen);
230cm (Ikenotaira);
355cm at the top, 175cm bottom (Suginohara);
275cm (Kumado Snowboard Park);
170cm (Pine Valley);
360cm (Seki Onsen);
180cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
180cm (Madarao Sympathique);
185cm (Madarao Kogen);
170cm (Cupid Valley);
275cm (Myoko Ski Park);
145cm (Togakushi);
170cm (Kurohime);
135cm (Iizuna);
150cm (Iizuna Kogen)

Furano Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 8:08am
Weather conditions: sunny brisk morning. Upper mountain is covered in cloud.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another excellent day on the mountain yesterday with fresh snow for all. The pick of the fresh snow runs was Challenge, but also Kuma Otoshi for those 2 runs per day was worth the wait.

The groomers are excellent, but be aware that the fresh snow on the runs means that by around midday the groomers are choppy with lots of loose fresh snow being pushed around.

Overnight it continued to keep snowing with a total of 25cm in the last 24 hours, and it is still falling. Today is going to be a fun snow day. Again Challenge, Panorama and Kuma are the powder pics for the day.

Minakami Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 8:18am
Weather conditions: snowing 3cm/hour
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A warmer day yesterday enabled some settling of the snow pack and some melt at the valley level.

The snow has hit again this morning with 10cm of fresh currently at the valley level and the snow falling at 3cm/hour. The snow is predicted to last until midnight and should bring a total of 40cm to the valley.

There is no wind at present at the valley level and only a light breeze in the upper mountains. Visibility will be average in the upper mountains but good at lower areas.

There is more snow forecast for tomorrow with patches of cloud. Tuesday is forecast for sun with the remainder of the week looking like snow. This means lots of fresh for the long weekend!

Backcountry
Sluffs and small slab avalanches highly probable in the backcountry at present as the new snow is not bonding with the older layers. Extreme caution is advised for this weekend.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Extreme
Tree Line: Considerable

Niseko Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 8:43am
Weather conditions: Overcast, snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow levels weren't quite as generous yesterday but the snow was extremely light. Early runs under the Ace 4 were the best in Hirafu but the best riding was again in Annupuri. Apperently larger numbers of riders meant that you had to be an early riser to get the best snow, but even later in the day the forrest areas were holding some hidden secrets. The official numbers don't show any new snowfall but the avalanche report notes 10cm of fresh snow down low, which confirms what everyone is seeing in the villlage.

There are two low pressure cells nearby, one to our east and one to our north. They will meet up tomorrow to our northeast and it looks like they will continue to work against the large continental high to our west which is still dragging down cold air. So long as the boundary between the two systems is over us and the sea of japan we should continue to get regular, moderate snowfalls. The next couple of days look good in this regard.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 10:52am
Weather conditions: White sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The dawn started with a flurry of snow today - a bit of a surprise considering the stars where out and swinging across the sky in full force last night - the bare heavens chilling the temperature right down beyond the -5 degrees zone.

Another warmish -2 degrees Celsius in the morning, a good day for wearing the orange or red tinted goggles, that is to say that we have flat light up here - a white-grey sky with high cloud, conditions that allow sneaky bumps to approach us without us seeing them. A lot of sorry heads on the mountain this morning... meandering their way down the hill wondering why they sipped on that extra thimble of hot sake.

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 11:02am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun did appear for a short time yesterday but it ended up being a rather grey - but often bright - day and overcast/cloudy.

Snow is falling higher up on the mountains but down in the town at the moment despite the forecast for snow it is holding off for now. Just a few cm of snow in the region since yesterday.

It is just over 0 degrees at the moment and the forecast for the day is actually for snow throughout today and into tomorrow but at present it doesn't look like we can expect much to fall today. Visibility higher up though might be fairly poor as the mountains are covered with cloud.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 11:08am
Weather conditions: Cloud, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was generally a fine day, though not as sunny as people with cameras might have wanted! This morning though the snow clouds are back and while it is not heavy snow by any means, there is fairly poor visibility out there in places but not much of a wind to blow it about.

So it's generally a rather grey day. We are down for snow throughout the day and maybe it setting in more later on and into tomorrow, when snow is also forecast.

Milder temperatures this morning but those are forecast to dip for tomorrow.

Night operations planned at the following resort areas today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 15:22pm
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been snowing quite steadily in Nozawa since early this morning. It is not particularly cold and the flakes are falling quite quickly. A little bit of pow up there today but nothing to write home about, hopefully the snow that is forecast to fall tonight will bring freshies for tomorrow.

We are expecting snow pretty much all week with temperatures dropping slightly tomorrow and the next day.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 3rd February 2008, 19:34pm
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow started falling around 2am this morning and has been coming down steadily at around 2cm an hour today, with maybe 15-20cm of fresh snow at the base and 30cm higher up. There have been light winds from the south and also relatively mild temperatures of -1 at the base and about -4 at the top lifts.

The snow today has been really light, and lots of happy skiers and boarders sliding around nicely out there!

Continued high avalanche danger today.   Read more ...
