Furano Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 1:28am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another mild, early-winter day in Furano has seen the snow slowly retreat from the roads, finding shelter in the fields and sidewalks of the city. Tomorrow, with a forecast high of 11, should see unseasonably high temperatures accompanied by a steady rain, heavy at times, that will not be good for the resort's planned opening day of December 4th. The rain is expected to start around daybreak, and continue through until tomorrow night, where it will taper off to a wintry mix and finally change to all snow as the cold front passes through.

The only good news to report is that next week should see a return to more seasonal temperatures, with plenty of snow in the forecast. Winter, please come quickly.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 10:15am
Weather conditions: Rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Rain falling today and with the warmish temperatures it is even rain at the very top. There is a chance that this may turn into snow tonight and tomorrow morning but it looks as if it will be another quiet weekend in Minakami.

The temperatures should stay cold tomorrow morning with a chance of some light snow up high but will probably rise again next week. The forecast does have a couple of snowmen on it for late next week but that is a long way off yet so will see if that changes before then.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Rain, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night we had some very strong winds and also rain and today the rain is continuing but it's not as windy as it was. Not particularly nice weather though and it looks like we will see more of the same into tomorrow - though colder than today. Today is actually quite warm. The heater is off at the moment and it is around 16 degrees in the town area. Having said that though there is a chance that overnight tonight Kagura might get some snowfall which would certainly be welcome up there on their open course.

We should see more fine cloudy/sunny conditions on Sunday and Monday but the good news is that after on Tuesday and Wednesday the temperature will drop and we can expect some snow - and possibly some decent snowfall especially higher up on the mountains. Fingers crossed.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 11:29am
Weather conditions: Rain, thick cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Nothing really to report in terms of snowfall I'm afraid since the last report.

Right now it is raining even high up as the temperature is too mild for snow at 6 degrees. There's a fairly strong wind blowing about at times but more than that visibility is causing a few issues up there as there is some thick cloud covering the mountain and poor visibility. The course that has been open continues to be open though.

This evening it should get colder and there is a chance of snow overnight.

Clearer weather later on in the weekend is forecast but after that things are looking pretty good for Tuesday and Wednesday when we might see the first decent snowfall of the season. More on that nearer the time.

In the meantime, Naeba still plans to open it's run at the base of the resort from tomorrow. It is 100% artificial snow on a 900m long and up to 40m wide course, serviced by the No 5 quad lift and No 4 pair lift in front of the main hotel. 8:30am tomorrow is when it all starts!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 11:36am
Weather conditions: Rain, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Nozawa, and a wet and rainy one it is too at the moment. It's really quite mild as well this morning, currently about 12 degrees, though it will cool down later on today and overnight we might see some snowfall in higher areas.

It's not going to be enough for the resort to open of course and they have now announced that they hope to open on Saturday 11th December.

The good news is that next weekend is looking much more promising as right now the forecast has snow from around Monday evening through at least into Wednesday. Wednesday is looking the most exciting with some cold temperatures and the chance of decent snowfall down to village level.

Won't be long now!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 14:20pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, precipitation has been falling from the skies. Alas at this elevation in Hakuba Village it was in the form of rain late into the night and into the morning today. Colder temperatures are expected this evening and with any luck this should fall as big fat snow flakes.

In terms of the weeks forecast, we are looking to early next week for some flurries to arrive and bring some snow our way. All we need is that low pressure front to roll across the North Japan sea, pick up some moisture and deposit it on our doorstep.

All the ski hills in Hakuba are in waiting mode, fingers crossed for the big dumps in a short time period Hakuba is renowned for!

Get those snow DVD on, get training for an epic season around the corner.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 16:13pm
Weather conditions: Rain > cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Strange weather the last 24 hours or so. It has been raining very heavily in the region today and it has been a very mild day with the thermometer showing me a high of 12 degrees. So, as you can imagine, that lot isn't doing us any favours with the snow that was on the slopes. The bottom slopes are all back to green-mode now and my guess is that the snow that was up top has taken a bit hit as well.

Things have cleared up somewhat this afternoon and we even have some snow forecast for overnight, so it's all over the place at the moment.

Tomorrow is the official opening ceremony for the resort - and that will go ahead whether you can actually ski or not. The resort is saying that it will be having it's 'Grand Opening' tomorrow. Will there be enough snow tonight to let the resort open tomorrow? Lets hope so. Personally it seems doubtful, but hopefully my saying that will turn out to be a cunning plan to will enough snow to fall from the skies and get things open, even if it is just a run or two up top.

Anyway, I will post an update tomorrow morning with the latest.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 18:11pm
Weather conditions: Heavy wind and rain; some fog through the day
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I was thinking about starting daily reports on December 1, but it was such a nice warm day, that I just couldn't get the mind on it.... Finished the last of the unending preparations for winter (all the trees and compost pot bound up against the snow, a forest of bamboo wands et up to mark where things are once the snow falls).

There is no snow on the ground, and roaring winds and rain since yesterday have even cleaned off a lot of the peaks. Looks like there might be some flurries ahead, but nothing of note (and a plug for SnowJapan's weather service: the freeze line information is invaluable all year round--check it out).

Furano Now!

Friday 3rd December 2010, 18:22pm
Weather conditions: Rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's been a rain event all day here in Furano with temperatures steady at around 8 degrees at village level, due to the storm that is rocking the majority of Hokkaido and the main island of Japan. You may be wondering where is winter? The rain is forecast to continue throughout the day tomorrow before tapering off to a wintry mix and turning to all snow come Sunday. Snow is in the forecast from next Wednesday onwards.

All that aside, the resort has renewed its resolve to open tomorrow, despite the current conditions. It isn't going to be the best day out on the slopes, but it will be your first chance to get some of that famous Furano powder. The resort is running a special in order to lift the spirits of those who buy lift tickets directly from the resort tomorrow. 1 in 100 will win a free all-day pass!   Read more ...
