Once again the Snow Japan forecast was right on the mark - rain from late afternoon yesterday, solid rain falling now. Pretty gray and wet day, but hopefully it will be nice again tomorrow.

One note: Akakan has been very proudly holding to its report of a 210cm snowpack for more than a week now; there's still lots of snow but this is just not possible (well, it might be, but the measurement is not at the same place as before, if you get what I mean).

Furano Now!

Wednesday 3rd April 2013, 9:16am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 180cm
It is a very warm day today with temperatures already well above freezing to high elevations on the ski area. Light rain has settled in and will be with us throughout the day but there is the possibility of some light snow falling this evening. Disregarding the rain there is still plenty of great skiing to be had with most of the main runs open in the Furano Zone and absolutely no issue with snow coverage.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud, fog
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 490cm
[Originally posted earlier this morning - late appearance due to technical issues]

Good morning from Niseko. It's a warm one this morning. Clearer earlier on but more cloudy now with some foggy conditions meaning poor visibility on some of the upper slopes today and that actually affecting some of the lifts including the top King Number 4 at Niseko Grand Hirafu, the top Hanazono lift and the Hirafu Spring Park as of 10:30am.

It feels like it's going to warm up a fair bit more today and that's what the forecast is saying as well. A proper spring like feel to the air. The forecast sun for the day hasn't turned up but tomorrow the forecast is calling for similar sunny conditions - so perhaps it'll clear up by then. Perhaps not as warm.

Getting quieter and quieter out on the slopes now!

Temps up over 15 degrees again yesterday at base and over 10 degees on the mountain in another warm day. Glimpses of the sun in places for short periods but generally it was a very cloudy and overcast day and later on in the day rain started falling came.

Overnight temperature dipped down to around 5 degrees and now at 9am it is around +7 at village base. Unfortunately as we get up this morning it's still raining and it looks like it has been raining all night, though hopefully it will ease later on this afternoon.

We should have brighter conditions tomorrow and it's going to be warm(er still) especially around Friday and Saturday. We might even see temps hitting 20 degrees. Yikes. Well, it is April after all!

Well, it's not a very nice start to the day here! As forecast, rain and heavy rain as I write the report. All through the night too and it doesn't seem keen to give up anytime soon.... might be tomorrow morning before it stops.

So definitely a day for a soak in an onsen today or some other activity, I can't see it being much fun on the slopes, especially when the biggest chance of snow today up at Kagura isn't going to be possible due to wind closures.

Let's hope for a nicer day tomorrow - local forecast is cloudy start turning sunny.

And rain it is. A bit of a nasty morning to be honest. (Not that I'm never honest!)

Rain. To add to that. Wind. Wind that is causing lifts problems at both Naeba and Kagura where only parts of Tashiro and Mitsumata are open.

So not the best of days and it almost feels like winter is being flushed out of the system.

No doubt Kagura will be bouncing back though and tomorrow it will be not quite so warm and we might get to see Mr Sunshine later in the day.

[Originally posted earlier this morning - late appearance due to technical issues]

Lunchtime report today. I was actually kind of hoping that I would be able to report the rain stopping but for the moment I am unable to do that. Yes it has been a very wet day today and just taking a look at the webcams you can see that there's raindrops on the cam there even up at the top Yamabiko course areas.

If some weekdays this season have been very quiet, today is eerily quiet. Can't expect many people to be stoked about venturing out onto late spring conditions in the rain though I suppose - however much of a workout it might be!

Thankfully this rain should finish up by this evening and we'll have improved conditions tomorrow. Perhaps a cloudy start with sun forecast for later. It's going to warm up quite a lot as well especially on Friday and Saturday when it might be getting really toasty.

Zao Now!

Wednesday 3rd April 2013, 15:24pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 135cm
It hasn't been a particularly nice day here in Zao Onsen. Rain and strong winds as with many areas it seems today. Warm too overnight into this morning and the coldest I saw it get was +5. It hasn't got that much warmer during the day but the rain has continued. Strong winds have meant the Kurohime lift closed as well today. As you might expect, it has been particularly quiet out there.

All of a sudden, or so it seems, large parches of earth on view on lower slopes of the resort. Noticeably getting bigger by the day and probably today in particular. Still, a fair bit and very good cover still higher up on the mountain.

After today we should see sunnier conditions and into the weekend something of a warm up.

Current lift operations:

The following lifts plan to be open through until 6th May:

All the Ropeways
Chuo Number 1 Pair AB (every day)
Chuo Number 2 Pair AB (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April and 27th April until 6th May)
Katakai Triple (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April, 27th-29th April, 3rd-6th May)
Paradise Pair AB (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April and 27th April until 6th May)
The Yokokura Number 1 Pair AB will remain open as long as there's enough snow.

It would seem that lots of places around Nagano are getting rained on today. Up here, there has actually been a bit of (wet) new snow in places. Yakebitaiyama resort area are even reporting 5cm of freshies this morning on their slopes.

Other areas reporting more like sleet conditions and here in Maruike as I write this it's just cloudy and foggy with a few spots of rain (sleet). Bimyou! But there's definitely a 'wet' feel to proceedings this morning.
