Cloudy, light snow high up soon perhaps
We have snow this morning! Well, a bit anyway with Kagura reporting 2cm of fresh snow up top. They are also saying 'snow' as the weather conditions but the webcams don't seem to be saying the same so perhaps they are referring to the forecast which is for cloud/light snow during the day today. Right now further down from the top it is just grey and cloudy. It may well rain at lower elevations as well but whether that will happen at any part of Kagura or Mitsumata remains to be seen.
Tomorrow is looking like it will be clear, sunny and warm. Down in Yuzawa town main it might get up into double digit temperatures and even at Kagura probably in the positives. After a bit more cloud on Saturday, generally clear conditions are lined up through into Tuesday.
Operations at Naeba and Kagura are as follows (31st March):
Naeba: - No 3 quad lift - No 5 quad lift
This means that the lower courses on the mountain are open (all upper areas closed).
We are greeted to the morning with a sprinkling of fresh snow in Shiga Kogen. A couple of cm I would say. It's not mad cold but cold enough for it to be snow but it's of the fairly wet variety. But hey, we are right at the end of March! Very light snow falling in some areas now, and in others just dull and cloudy. I would expect the day to end up being a mix of cloud and that light snow falling.
Tomorrow we will be back to real spring weather with temperatures into the positives and sunny clear skies on the forecast.

Cloud, light snow
And snow fall it did. Not a huge amount and the roads are generally clear but enough to make windscreens on the cars white so I would hope the chance of maybe more high on the mountains. Goryu isn't actually reporting any new snow though in terms of cm, so not sure about that. Why not get up there and check it out! ;) Lower mountains are visible but upper slopes shrouded in cloud early on.
Taking a look at the forecast, weather conditions from tomorrow through until around Tuesday are looking likely to be sunny with clear skies. Tomorrow in particular will be a warm one and it may well rise to about 10 degrees in the village.
For now though it is around 1 degrees.

It's a generally cloudy morning here in Yuzawa with a temperature of 2 degrees now and some sleet (best word to describe it) trying to fall slightly at the moment. Higher up Kagura are actually reporting fresh snow today, a whopping 2cm of the stuff, but I find it unlikely that we will get anything more than a small sprinkling beyond that today.
In fact conditions do seem most likely to clear up later on before the sun makes a starring appearance tomorrow heating things up to maybe around 12 degrees in Yuzawa.
Anyway here is the latest updated info on the planned closing dates for ski resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region of Niigata:
Part open until 3rd April: - Naeba - Yuzawa Park - Iwappara - NASPA Ski Garden - Ipponsugi - Joetsu Kokusai
Part open until 10th April: - Kandatsu Kogen - Nakazato Snow Wood
Mostly open until 22nd May: - Kagura (+ Mitsumata)*
All other resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma area are now closed for the season.
Official snow depths @ Thursday 31st March 2011 AM

Kandatsu Kogen: 250cm
NASPA Ski Garden: 210cm
Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm

The warmer weather seems to be settling in slowly and will stay warm through to Friday, and cool down a little on the weekend. At high elevation there is a chance of some fresh snow although it will probably be a dusting. Temperatures have been above zero since early morning. Pistes are spring conditions and weather is near perfect. Operating lifts will be open from 9am - 4pm. Read more ...

Partly cloudy and hazy
Nothing really new to report. The fine and mild weather continues. The nights are still cool though, Kutchan got down to -5 last night. Today has been partly cloudy and hazy with temps getting up to 8 degrees down low. Overall it's been another good March with Kutchan just cracking 2m's of snowfall for the month. This is above the long term average and only 13cm less than what we received last March (which was pretty epic). We don't normally expect to see much snow in April but this coming weekend we are expecting some reasonable falls. Last year we recorded 25cm in April and the most ever recorded was in 1987 when Kutchan received 88cm. Will be interesting to see how much we get this weekend. Currently there is still a complete snow cover throughout the region even on the plains surrounding the mountains. The farmers though have started spreading ash on the snow covered fields to hasten the melt. They also plough up the snow to increase the surface area and cause more melting. Pretty sure they won't be happy if it snows much this weekend! Some of us will be though!!
Current Official Snow Depths:
Grand Hirafu: Top - 390 Bottom - 180
Niseko Village: Top - 380 Bottom - 170
Annupuri: Top - 400 Bottom - 170
This season's Niseko Avalanche Information is finished
Cloud and light snow higher up today in Nozawa with a high of around just 3 degrees - so it has been a chilly day. Not enough snow to register in the cm though, so very much a light dusting. It is still very cloudy but overnight conditions should change and looking at the forecast we can expect some fine weather conditions tomorrow.... sun and a high approaching double digit temperatures in the afternoon.
Just a note of explanation for those interested in why the Nozawa resort page on our site says "340cm" as the snow depth --- that was the official snow depth up at Yamabiko this morning, but as those runs are closed now we are not reporting that number any more on these reports. The data shown on the resort pages are provided to us automatically (and ultimately via the resort themselves) and so we can't simply adjust that. It seems that the one default reading that they provide is set for Yamabiko numbers. As you can probably gather, things aren't quite 'normal' at the moment with all that is going on in Japan, so I think we can forgive the system for that! Hope that explains that point.
The following lifts on the upper areas of the resort are not operating: Uenotaira quad, Yamabiko No2 Four, Yamabiko Four, Nagasaka Gondola upper station. The upper part of the mountain will be closed for the rest of the season.
It is recommended that you contact your accommodation or the resort to confirm any details before travelling. Read more ...
