Niseko Now!

Monday 30th November 2015, 7:55am
Weather conditions: Lovely morning just some early morning cloud hanging on
New snowfall: 20cm
Snow depth: 10cm
1pm update:

A special update here with the news that Niseko Grand Hirafu plan to open from tomorrow, Tuesday 1st December.

Hurray!

The plan is for the Ace Number 3 pair lift to be servicing the Center Course which is higher up on the resort, with the Ace Number 2 Center Four lift taking people up to that area. 5 hour lift ticket is 2000 yen for adults and 1000 yen for children and seniors. The Center Four lift should get moving at 8:30am. That's the news I have for the moment, there may be more by the time I post my next report tomorrow morning.

Photos refreshed as well with this update other information remaining the same.

Earlier on...

Good morning from a sunny Niseko region. Yes, the sun is out and it's a beautiful morning.

The snow that we have had since my report yesterday - another 20cm after continuing through the day and until last night - is giving us that feeling of a real need to strap the boots on and get out to enjoy it. But not quite yet... maybe. Oh, the uncertainty of early season!

No word yet from Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri, who are as keen to get started as we are, and I need to get myself over to Sapporo today so posting quite early. It shouldn't be far off now though.

Forecast says there might be more snow on the way later on in the day today and then look to the end of the week for more after that.

---

Planned opening dates for the Niseko resorts:

Niseko Grand Hirafu: as soon as there's enough snow
Niseko Annupuri: as soon as there's enough snow
Niseko Village: Tuesday 1st December
Niseko HANAZONO: Saturday 5th December

'Nighta' should be starting on Saturday 12th December   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 30th November 2015, 8:11am
Weather conditions: Early morning cloud, blue skies above
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
As forecast it looks like today is going to be a fine and sunny one - first half of it anyway. There's lots of early morning low cloud around the region this morning but blue skies above it and probably very quickly we will all be able to enjoy that. It's going to be a mild day with temperatures rising above 10 degrees later on.

Yesterday of course the lower part of the main run at Kagura opened for the first time this season. Not a huge amount of snow up there, certainly by Kagura standards, but enough to keep going hopefully until the next snowfall and an increase in base. There are some snow making machines up there as well helping out. That next snow is looking likely to be with us by the end of the week.

Down here at town level we're going to get something falling this week. There's a good chance of rain but borderline chance of snow to fall as well around Friday. All eyes on those temperatures.

Tomorrow we enter December. If you didn't experience December here last year, do take a look at the archive reports and see how we were treated to 5.5m of snowfall here at town level in that one month. Last December the snowfall was at times a bit crazy, even for us. It will certainly be interesting to see how this year will shape up. Until now of course it has been relatively mild and the longer term forecast for the prefecture tells us that December should be around average or slightly warmer than average. This particular region of the prefecture doesn't always play by the rules though - and hopefully not this year!

Hakuba Now!

Monday 30th November 2015, 8:30am
Weather conditions: Some cloud around, lots of blue sky
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 20cm
It's going to be a fine day today with blue skies and sunshine from early in the morning.

A few things to remind us that we don't really actually have much snow yet...

Hakuba 47 are saying that they plan to close Line E tomorrow (Tuesday) and on 4th December (Friday) due to lower temperatures expected on that day and so a chance to get the snow-making machines going. Apparently it's not possible to have the machines going as well as the lifts moving - some electricity consumption issue. Hopefully nature will help us all out and just give us a good old dump that will kick everything into action.

Happo-one are opening their Panorama course again today, but also mentioning that plans beyond today are not fixed. Perhaps this is mindful of the forecast milder and sunny conditions for today.

The forecast is still looking promising for later in the week and definitely for higher elevations.

Furano Now!

Monday 30th November 2015, 11:46am
Weather conditions: Beautiful day to day. Need suncream.
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 60cm
Furano off to a lovely bluebird day

This morning was about -4 at Kitanomine Village, at the base of the resort definitely on the 'wrong' side, as skiing has started on the other side. But it does look lovely in Kitanomine today.

No wind this morning. About one millimetre of fresh dry snow which I did see falling off and on yesterday, but am not sure if it came from the sky or off trees and roofs. Nice to see, regardless. Exceedlingly dry snow.

Photo 1 is the resort in Kitanomine Zone around 7.30 this moring.
Photo 2 is a flag not fluttering (no wind) facing back towards Furano town.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Monday 30th November 2015, 13:32pm
Weather conditions: Clear earlier clouding over now
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
The day started off with lots of clear blue skies and the sun shining down on us. Some impressive looking lower clouds over Yamagata city as well making for wonderful scenery.

It has since clouded over more and it's more grey than blue at the moment early afternoon.

Looks like we are going to have to wait a few days before seeing the chance of more snow - or anything significant - but looking to Friday and we can see what could possibly be the answer to our waiting... heavy snow and strong winds is on the forecast. A good blizzard would be enough to get things started (once it clears up a bit perhaps).

Next report later in the week with the latest (or if there is any news in the meantime).
