Morning all. Two more days left in March! I still have about 40 morning reports to post though...

What's this? (Wet) snow!

Yes, some rain last night I'm afraid but this morning wet snow has been falling. A curious sight of large flakes, but they're not light and fluffy. It's fairly mild, and better than rain. We'll have to see what nature decides to give us during the day today.

From tomorrow, sunny skies are forecast for the weekend and into next week.

We are into the last few days of the season for Niseko HANAZONO and for the main season at Niseko Village too, planned closing dates added below.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 30th March 2017, 8:06am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies and sunny
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Yuzawa.

Yesterday we enjoyed some fine weather and very mild conditions, and this morning the sun is out and it is going to be warmer still. There's a mix of rain and snow on some forecasts for tonight with cloud or fine conditions again expected tomorrow and not quite as warm.

There is still a fair amount of snow around town areas though it's fairly quickly melting each day now with the warmer conditions. In fact, you can see lots of locals busy trying to help the snow melt quicker on their rice fields by breaking it up with diggers - or manually with shovels!

There's also still a lot of snow on the slopes - no problems there this year!

A bunch of ski resorts in the area will be having their last day of the season this coming Sunday - info on planned closing dates below.

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Clear blue skies and sunshine
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Hakuba.

No fresh snow to report but lots of clear blue skies and sunshine this morning. A beautiful spring morning.

I have done some re-arranging of the resort-specific information below and will keep an eye on details and update as necessary.

---

Some people ask - why are some ski resorts closing when there's still so much snow left? I'm sure there are a few reasons but I guess the big one is how a ski resort manager told me at a drinking party recently... 'cost performance'.

Keeping a resort open costs money and with less people turning up, staffing issues etc, some ski hills may just think it is not worth remaining open after a certain point.

May I add that the ski resort manager was not one from Hakuba.

Thursday 30th March 2017, 9:57am
Weather conditions: Fantastic blue bird
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Naeba everybody.

Today is looking like it's going to be another sunny hot day. Things will get pretty slushy later in the day but remember we still have a massive amount of snow with an official base of 240cm so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Looking on we are expecting rain at some point this afternoon which will turn into snow during the night. Then the snow is expected to continue until Saturday when it may turn into rain again. Currently, Sunday the 2nd April which is closing day is predicted to be fantastic weather.

Fingers crossed!   Read more ...
