Niseko Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 8:24am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Over the past 24 hours it has been snowing on and off, leaving a nice layer of white everywhwere. As temperatures continue to remain below zero, the snow conditions are going to be great on and off-piste.

As weather patterns look to return to their normal status of bringing the colder weather from Siberia, we can expect snowfalls over the next week, with some clear weather in between dumps.

Recommendations include heading out to Hanazano, Higashi-yama and up to the peak when it opens up.

Furano Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 8:34am
Weather conditions: Overcast, snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It started snowing again around 9pm yesterday and hasn't stopped yet. We have 10cm or more of dry, light powder on the ground here in town so it should be a perfect day up on the mountain. The temperature is only -4 this morning but it's not predicted to get above 0 today. Yesterday got much too warm with the sunshine but hopefully today will stay overcast and this snow will keep on coming.

Should be a great day to hit the ungroomed areas or even just along the side of the groomed slopes, the groomed runs here are very wide and it seems most people prefer going down the middle so the sides usually keep some good powder stashes through the day.

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 9:40am
Weather conditions: grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A lot of cars were rolling down the hill into the Naeba village today, I kind of expected to see a few leaving this morning, but it seems a lot of people have taken more time off for the holiday. Reports coming back from Kagura and Naeba yesterday were of uncrowded conditions which was surprising really.

The mountain from the top of gondola No 2 is shrouded in cloud this morning and the temperature is 0 degrees at village level. The rest of the sky is overcast with light grey cloud. No chance of the sun this morning and it looks like there will be some light snow. In fact I've just seen a couple of snow flakes flutter by the window.

Both gondolas appear to be about to open. :-)   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 10:09am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow to report this morning and it is a generally cloudy start to the day with temperatures around +2 at the moment and probably rising to around +5 later in the afternoon.

It looks like there is a chance of snow falling later on tonight and tomorrow morning, although for forecast doesn't seem to have temperatures falling that much overnight so it is probably not going to be a significant fall if it comes... we'll have to wait longer for that!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is a lot of cloud around this morning in the region. No new snow to report, though we may be in for some snowfall later on in the day and into tomorrow.

Whilst the big part of Shiga Kogen is now open and conditions are decent, the snow depth numbers are still looking very low for the region. (Same in other regions as well this year, of course). If you take a look through the archives of the Shiga Kogen reports - links at the bottom of this page - you'll notice just how different the snow levels are this season compared to last year. Here's an example:

LAST YEAR
January 2nd 2006:
230cm at Yokoteyama
250cm at Okushiga Kogen.

TODAY
January 2nd 2007:
80cm at Yokoteyama
85cm at Okushiga Kogen.

Quite a difference in those numbers. Of course, as long as there is decent snow cover you can't actually tell much of a difference, but we want and expect a long season and so the more snow the better. Here's looking to the next dump!    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 10:39am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We are having a cloudy day after two beautiful sunny days, which is good because we don't want anymore of our precious snow to melt away! The top of the resorts still have some good snow, getting a little icy in the shaded areas though. The bottom of most resorts are open but showing some grass and rocks so you may not want to use your brand new skis that Santa brought you if you are skiing to the bottom. The temperatures are staying below zero so snow is being made by most areas to some extent. We are expecting a new storm to roll in with some more snow by possibly as early as tomorrow evening, fingers crossed!

Stay tuned for an updated avalanche report, the boys are out in the backcountry today digging through the layers to see what's been happening out there.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 11:48am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A slightly overcast start to the day today in Nozawa but the snow is great and the conditions still good. The lift lines today are the longest they have been but are still moving quickly and the maximum wait is around 15minutes at the Bottom gondolas. Once up on the mountain however, people are quite spread out and the chair lifts have little or no wait at all.

Light snow is expected to begin today and the weather looks ominous. Up at Yambiko at the moment the visibility is virtually none and it is –2C while lower at Uenotaira is surprisingly clear and currently at 0C.

The forecast still says light snow for today and Wednesday but Wednesday evening the weather will clear and Thursday should be sunny.

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 2nd January 2007, 12:15pm
Weather conditions: Overcast with light precipitation
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Clear skies this morning have given way to a dark sky and there is a hint of rain at the village level and some light snow starting to fall futher up the mountains. With a current temperature of 3 deg C it is likey that the village may also get some snow later this evening.

The forecast for tomorrow is showing snow from late afternoon, and the weekend promises to be good for 2 days of snow as well.

Houdaigi has now opened the entire field and Minakami Kogen is set to follow in the next few days. By the end of the next weekend all areas should have all lifts operating.   Read more ...
