Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 18th March 2018

A good first day for Tenjin yesterday. As predicted the early blue skies clouded over and by mid-morning the snow was falling.
It is a cold one today but some of yesterday's snow still around for those that are heading up the hill. The clouds are due in again later and it looks as if we are in for some grey skies for the rest of the week to come. That should mean more snow is on the way.
Okutone Snow Park are planning to open up on Friday 21st December.

An early report this morning and the news is of the snowy kind... well yesterday was anyway. There's some cloud hanging around upper elevations this morning bit it does look likely that it will be a fine day in the region once they clear up. Lower down in the town area of Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma the sun is peeping out from behind some of the clouds with a lot of clear sky as well especially to the north.
Lets go back a bit to yesterday and in the evening Kagura were saying that they were expecting 20-30cm of frew snow. Turns out that they apparently got 20-25cm and have increased the snow depth up top to 130cm this morning. Nice. Conditions should be good up there. It's a very cold morning with -8C at Kagura, but I doubt that will be an issue for the people getting up there. If the sun does make an appearance we can expect it to warm up a bit.
Clearer conditions likely tomorrow and next snowfall around Tuesday.
Official resort snow depth: Kagura - 130cm
Planned opening dates: Kagura (Tashiro) on December 8th Naeba on December 8th Read more ...

Cloudy but clearing up
All change early on this morning in Yuzawa.
Some cloud over Yuzawa still but just to the north in Minamiuonuma clear skies have started to open up after the snowfall of yesterday and the sun is shining down. Everywhere is looking nice and white as well around town. Snow is still thin on the ground at town level but this morning we have the most we have had so far. There was the usual mad rush for changing tyres to snow tyres at the gasoline stands around town yesterday.
This morning Kagura are reporting 20-25cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday and so people will definitely be able to enjoy their time up there this morning.
We're probably not going to see it last though with decent conditions today and sun and warmer temperatures forecast for tomorrow along with some rain around Tuesday. It's looking good for some consistent snowfall higher up from Tuesday.
Daily updates from the Kagura and Naeba area of Yuzawa:
It is a beautiful morning here in Hakuba - bright and clear with thin layers of cloud, but the blue sky is dominating proceedings today. Today is a blue bird day!
It is also a cold start to the day, early on about -4C degrees and in the afternoon it should be the warmest at around 2C degrees. There is no wind around either, so it should be a pleasant day out.
You want to know about snow? We had some decent snow coming down yesterday and while Goryu are officially reporting 5cm on their website, more like 15cm higher up. Goryu have 45cm as their snow depth (that almost seems too low to me), with Happo reporting 60cm. With the top-up yesteday though conditions should be certainly improved this morning for those lucky enough to be able to get out there. It does not look like any more runs or lifts are opening up though just quite yet.
The forecast is still telling us to expect warmer conditions tomorrow along with more sun. Things start to look interesting from early Tuesday onwards though with snow lined up into next weekend and a real drop in temperatures once again.
This morning Niseko Grand Hirafu hits 2m of snow and with another 20-25cm of snow in the village falling overnight the fine start to the season seems to be continuing.
It has been snowing early on but as I write this there are even some signs of blue sky peaking through to the east and even some cheeky short glimpses of sunlight shining down. Light snow is still falling on the mountain though, so we'll just have to see which way it goes. The forecasts seem to be for the light snow to ease off and for it to be a generally cloudy day in the Niseko region.
It is another really cold start to the day and still down at around -5 degrees and it probably won't rise much either staying easily below zero.
Not much going on weather-wise tomorrow and rain is still looking possible around Tuesday along with a warm up - to start off with at least - but after that there is some very encouraging days of potential heavy snow lined up as temperatures dip right back down again.
There is a bit of a change with lifts at Niseko Village this morning where the Niseko Gondola and the Community Chair lifts will be operating today and tomorrow, and then they will be adding the Banzai Chair again from Tuesday.
With the Niseko Village Gondola opening up, this means of course that there's the connection to the Grand Hirafu resort area.

A big start to December: snow all through the day Saturday, for a total of 61cm at base level. Today it's an absolutely perfect blue sky, very little wind--too bad we don't have a little more snowpack, because it would be a perfect day for skiing.
The official opening date is the 15th for the Akakura resorts. If it keeps up like this, hopefully we'll have all the lifts going soon. Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Sunday 2nd December 2012, 9:00am
Cloud low down, clearer up top
Nozawa opened yesterday of course and it was a cold and snowy day out there. So snowy in fact that the resort this morning is telling us that they saw 40cm of fresh snow up on Yamabiko since yesterday. Couldn't ask for much more than that. With that new snowfall Yamabiko is now on 100cm.
This morning there is some low cloud covering things down by the village but a look at the webcams shows that up at Yamabiko it is lovely and clear with lots of clear sky and the sun shining down on the snowy runs. Looks very inviting, to say the least!
Weather-wise, it's probably more of the same tomorrow as well, a bit warmer than today but still keeping fairly cold and then Tuesday onwards we can expect more snow to be falling up top. Looks like it will be rain down in the village but Yamabiko should be receiving fresh top-ups.

Amazing what a bit of snow can do. Yesterday, the first lift of the season started moving! There's not that much snow out there (30cm according to the resort) and not much course area open, but the Chuo Number 1 pair lift is operating and part of the Chuo area at Zao Onsen is open.
I'll bring you more details on on Tuesday, when we will get the Zao Now reports into 'daily mode'.
It's been flurrying off and on all day long, but we haven't seen any of the substantial accumulations we've gotten used to seeing over the past several days. While the two or three centimeters of fresh powder on top of the snowpack might make for some comfy turns on the slopes, the flakes flying at the moment don't look like they'll be bringing the buckets of snow we'd all really like to see at the moment.
On the temperature side of things, it was a cold one today, and it looks like it will be cold again tomorrow. Temps bottomed out at -12 last night, definitely the coldest air we've seen all season. Winds are light to calm at the moment. Tomorrow looks like it's going to be a frosty start, so for all you early risers out there looking to hit the slopes first thing Monday morning, be sure to bundle up before heading out.
