Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 28th March 2013, 7:59am
Cloudy, thick fog higher up
An early report this morning from a cloudy and foggy Nozawa.
No new snow to report today as you might expect after that very warm day yesterday. It was almost t-shirt time out there, very warm indeed.
Happily this morning things have cooled down somewhat. It is around 4 degrees now at village level and I see the resort is saying that up on Yamabiko it is 2 degrees as of 7:30am.
Cloudy down here at base but up top it looks like it is thick fog conditions with the webcams just looking like a sheet of grey. Hopefully it will clear up somewhat this morning and some forecasts tell us to expect sun later on.
Tomorrow should be a sunny day in Nozawa after a fairly cold night and temps dipping to around 0 degrees overnight in the village. Again a high of around 5 or 6 degrees forecast for tomorrow. Looks like there might be a chance of rain on Sunday and so Saturday looks like it will be the pick of the weekend.

Cloud, blue sky
It's a warm morning - already +6 degrees. A fair amount of cloud up there, but a good share of blue sky too. Generally a fine morning I'd say and the sun is shining down on us.
The last few days has been particularly quiet here. Almost private ski resort style quiet. Great for those making it out for some spring ski fun.
Clouds might bring us some rain/snow later on, the former more probable.
The resort plans to be open until Sunday 31st March. Read more ...

Good morning from Hirafu and after a fine day yesterday, I have no new snowfall to report for you today.
It's a mild morning here, about 6 degrees already, and there's a fair amount of cloud around and quite windy too. So just cloudy for the moment but there looks like a good chance we will have some rain falling later on in the day. Hopefully that will keep to a minimum.
At the moment the forecast is telling us that there might be some snowfall early on next week, but I wouldn't hold out for anything significant. It is after all almost April!
The top Wonderland lift at Niseko Village is not operating at the time of writing due to the wind conditions over there. Similarly the King Number 4, King Number 3 and Swinging Monkey lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the top lift at Hanazono are stationary.
Official Resort Snow Depths
Grand Hirafu & Niseko Hanazono Top - 500cm Bottom - 240cm
Niseko Annupuri Top - 400cm Bottom - 250cm
Niseko Village Top - 440cm Bottom - 210cm
Niseko base 6am: 0C, no new snow, cloudy. Coastal data: wind S7m/s, 1.3m waves, pressure 1008hPa. Annupuri peak predicted windspeed at noon: SW20m/s.
With the approach and passing of low pressure system a southerly wind will pick up and warm air flow into the area. Above 1000m the wind will be stronger and visibility will become poor. Gates 2 & 3 will be closed today.
General avalanche risk is low. Risk of full depth avalanches around 1000m continues, avoid riding in their potential paths, like the valley bottoms. The snow in the trees is not good. The visibility is poor and it is hard to see the snow. Take care riding fast, hitting or falling into something. Beware cornices collapsing.
As the snow melts snow bridges across creeks will begin to collapse. Take care crossing creeks, water temperature is very low. Please check information posted in front of gates and listen to patrols advice when passing through gates. Do not duck ropes. Do not enter off limits areas. Have a safe day. Read more ...

Soon after I posted my report yesterday it got greyer and by lunchtime it was a cloudy and overcast day in Hakuba. Warm too with temperatures rising to 14 degrees at base, and Hakuba 47 reporting 10C on the slopes (Line C) at 3pm.
It didn't get colder than 3 degrees overnight and as we approach 9am this morning it is already 10 degrees here in the base of Happo area. A bit of rain has been falling in places too though the forecast is just for cloudy conditions today. There's just a slight warm breeze.
Some of the patches of ground on show on lower slopes have been getting bigger at an alarming rate the last few days - once the snow gets thin on the ground it dries up quicker of course and always the case. Why can't winter last all year?! I had a really fun half day out on Happo yesterday morning. Very much spring snow conditions of course, but still loads to play in up there and a good work out. My knees are feeling it this morning... must be getting old!
Official snow depths and operations @ Thursday 28th March 2013 AM:
Hakuba Goryu: No new snowfall reported by Hakuba Goryu. Official snow depths: Alps daira - 230cm; Toomi - 75cm; Iimori - 50cm
Hakuba 47: 0cm of new snowfall reported by Hakuba 47 since yesterday. Official snow depth: Upper - 150cm Lower - 65cm
Nice blue skies over Naeba at the moment with just a few stray clouds hanging on. Looks like there's more cloud over Kagura and more still as you get further north into the main part of Yuzawa town.
Not a whole lot to report this morning really. The snow is getting a bit patchy on the lower slopes of Naeba now, though still pretty decent cover and I would imagine they will be able to keep the lower slopes open until planned closing on April 7th. I've put the planned closing dates below.
Almost two more months planned for Kagura! They usually are able to do that, but with this March being relatively mild it will be interesting to see how the end of the season pans out. We'll let you know!
Official resort snow depth: Naeba - 200cm Kagura - 380cm

Kind of a nondescript day today... not exactly sunny; not completely cloudy.
It is warm, though - it's definitely going to be a spring skiing day today.
Some season-end news:
Akakura Onsen: last day 3/31 Suginohara: last day 3/31 Ikenotaira: last day 4/7 Madarao: last day 3/31 Kyukamura: last day 4/7 Myoko Ski Park: last day 4/4

Akakura Onsen 245cm, 3C
Ikenotaira 170cm, 3C
Suginohara 150cm, 5C
Seki Onsen 440cm, 0C (yesterday's report - they're filing late this week)
Right now it is 7C in town and a high of above 14C forecast for this afternoon, so it's really going to warm up today.
Some trails are now closed at Okutone, Norn and Houdaigi due to lack of snow but the resorts remain open.
For the next few days the forecast predicts continued warm weather with clear skies.

...and quite a lot warmer this morning.
More cloud than yesterday but still some blue sky to enjoy and the sun is out at times. Increasingly so actually since earlier on. No wind, all is calm.
Temperatures in the positive on all areas of the mountain this morning and right now it's already about 8 degrees. The forecast for lower down in Yamagata City goes up to 18 degrees for the day today.
Should get colder again tomorrow and for the weekend. Right now sunny clear skies forecast for Sunday.
Current lift operations:
The following lifts will run through until 31st March:
Onsen Number 4 Quad Sunrise Pair AB Nakamori Number 1 Triple Nakamori Number 2 Pair Diamond Number 1 Pair Diamond Number 2 Pair Oomori quad Yokokura Number 2 Pair Astraea Number 1 Pair Astraea Number 2 Pair Astraea Number 3 Pair
The following lifts plan to be open through until 6th May:
All the Ropeways Chuo Number 1 Pair AB (every day) Chuo Number 2 Pair AB (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April and 27th April until 6th May) Katakai Triple (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April, 27th-29th April, 3rd-6th May) Paradise Pair AB (every day until 14th April, then 20th/21st April and 27th April until 6th May)
The Yokokura Number 1 Pair AB will remain open as long as there's enough snow.
Yesterday was mild but this morning it's pretty warm. Resorts are reporting temps from 1 degrees to a whopping 15 degrees (Nishitateyama). I think just under 10 degrees is probably the average from around the areas.
It's not sunny though and we have mostly cloud cover up there. Well not here in the Maruike area anyway, though I can see it seems to be brighter and some blue skies over in Kumanoyu.
There's just a light warm breeze.
Today should be the odd one out though as it will get colder once again tomorrow. Not mid winter cold, but more like what we have had prior to today.
Nighta operations planned for tonight at the following resort area: Ichinose Family

Spring has certainly arrived in Furano and the warm weather has cleared most roads of snow, and snow banks around the town are slowly reducing in size. Luckily the mountain hasn't suffered too much from this and the snow is still in very very good condition for this time of year. Today temperatures on the lower mountain will rise well above 0c but from afternoon snow is expected on the upper mountain and then temperatures tomorrow will be back to winter norms. Read more ...

Yesterday I said that today should be warmer. And warmer it most certainly is. Outside the thermometer now says 10 degrees, and the forecast says a high of about 16 degrees at town level. We're all set to see it cool off a bit again though from tomorrow, but there doesn't look like much chance of much (any?) snow in the coming week with more of a chance of rain at times than snow. So is that our lot? The optimist in me holds out for one or two more refreshes, though the realist...
Anyway yes a cloudy morning though some patches of blue sky on show behind the clouds.
Tomorrow won't be as warm as today and mostly cloudy conditions again, with a chance of rain/snow showers in the morning according to the latest local forecast.
In a bit of resort news it seems that Maiko Snow Resort, while still open until 31st March (and then two more weekends only), has the Gondola closed. This doesn't affect the runs open as you can still get up to the back bowl using the two quad lifts...
