Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --

Snow continued through much of yesterday and overnight and this morning has seen some of the heaviest falls of the system so far. At lower levels it has been very wet snow and sleet at times and it has not accumulated all that much. Currently outside there's around 5-10cm on the ground in the village. Up high I'm really not sure how much will have accumulated but there would have to be at least 20-30cm.
The heaviest snow of the system appears to have moved just a little to the east of us overnight. Nakayama-toge, the pass between here and Sapporo is reporting 65cm on the ground this morning. That's a serious amount of snow for October! Anyway hopefully the clouds will lift later so we can get a glimpse of how much snow there is up top here.
The remainder of the week is expected to gradually warm up again and all the snow will melt from the lower slopes but up high there just may be enough snow now to last right through.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud, fog, snow
New snowfall: --

Good news to bring this morning as winter rapidly approaches.... the first snow of the season has fallen!

Yes, this morning we are being treated to a blanket of white in Shiga Kogen and a cm or two on the ground in places. It's still very cloudy and foggy so there's not much to see other than the frosted trees and lots of white.

Of course, we are still a ways off the season actually starting and no doubt this first snowfall will very soon be melted away with more autumn-like weather conditions returning soon, but it is always exciting to see the first snow of the season.

More regular updates from now on in!   Read more ...

Hot summer and a short autumn then....?

This morning we are happy to see the first snowfall of the season in Naeba. Seems fast after the summer we have had and then a relatively short autumn - only a few days ago people were on the gondola enjoying some spectacular autumn colours.... but this morning it's all white with the snow pretty much down to the base of the resort. Just a sprinkling and with warmer temperatures forecast for the coming days it will surely be quickly disappearing once again - but great to see all the same.

It's not long now before the season really does start. Kagura is planning on opening on 20th November and Naeba on 4th December.

We will be updating this page more now as we countdown to the season.

First snow!

Yes, the first snow of the season has fallen on the slopes of Nozawa. Yesterday was a really cold one and rainy but this morning we have been treated to some white slopes down to perhaps just under 1000m or so.

The mountain was shrouded in cloud this morning but things have been clearing up as the day has progressed and there is now some blue skies and the sun appearing as well.... lovely to see the white on the hills.

The forecast is for some finer warmer weather over the next week, so we might well be back into autumn like conditions soon.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 27th October 2010, 17:43pm
Weather conditions: First snow of the season on the mountains - turned into a fine day
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday evening sure was cold, but it's worth it when snow falls.

Yes, last night the mountains got snow down to around 950m and the snow was sticking 1200m and above. After a cloudy and overcast start to the day this morning with poor visibility, and just a light breeze from the north, things cleared up and it became a very fine day with clear, blue skies. Temperatures rose to around 9 degrees today.

Tomorrow should stay fairly chilly but after that things should get milder towards the weekend.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 27th October 2010, 19:48pm
Weather conditions: Remarkably wintery
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow! And I'm pleased to add that the Snow Japan weather service very correctly predicted the snowfall way ahead of time--much better than the big Japanese services.

So it fell last night; just a nice dusting at base level, but the slopes are all nice and white. Seki is reporting 30cm, which seems generous, since the hut at 2,100 meters below Mt. Hiuchi reported (and showed photos of) probably 30cm at the max. But it's always nice to see, even if it melts away. It will be back, we will be on skis, and life will one again be good.
