Kiroro Now!

Friday 27th March 2015, 7:25am
Weather conditions: Bird
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 260cm
Get your best T-shirt on if your heading to Kiroro today as it is most definitely warm and sunny!

We have another stunningly clear morning, with rather warm temperatures indeed, well into the postive side of the scale 6 degrees at the base and 2 degrees at the top. Probably the warmest day of the season yet.

The wind situation is calm around the base with light breezes up at the peaks, just enough to keep you cool as you shred around the spring snow in your favourite t-shirt.

This weather is here to stay at least for today and tomorrow anyway so enjoy it while its around!    Read more ...

Here I am with an early report this morning but it's such an easy one today.

And much the same is forecast for Saturday.

Looking like a chance of rain on Sunday but back to sun early week again.

Niseko Now!

Friday 27th March 2015, 7:40am
Weather conditions: Sunny, clear blue skies
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 435cm
It is a fine and clear morning here, if not slightly hazy looking.

I'm off to Sapporo this morning and so my report comes to you before the resorts report in.

The report below says that there are fairly strong winds higher up but whether that will affect lifts today... please check with the resorts come 8:30am for the latest info there.

Tomorrow similar conditions are forecast so it will be more sun for some spring fun.

Some signs that temperatures may dip a bit again mid week next week but that's a way off yet. For now it'll be mild and... well, yes, spring! Still lots of excite to be had.

---

Resort specific news as of 8:20am - subject to change during the day

Niseko Grand Hirafu:
Should be open as normal. (Ace Number 1, Ace Number 4 and King Number 1 now not operating).

Niseko Hanazono:
Set to open as planned this morning.

Niseko Village:
Should be open as normal. (Morino Chair lift now closed for the season apparently).

Niseko Annupuri:
Should be open as normal. (Jumbo Number 3 lift now closed for the season apparently).

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -2C, no snowfall, bluebird. Moiwa 800m data n/a. Annupuri 1000m snowpack 340cm. Hirafu 1000m: +4C. Peak data: WNW16m/s, -0.3C. Coastal data: Benkei cape S3m/s, Kamui cape SSW21m/s, 1011hPa, 1.6m waves.

The wind is blowing relatively strong up high, but snowdrift development is minimal. The temperature is inverted, low in lower altitude and higher up high. Peak gates are expected to open from the morning. A medium scale climax avalanche (250cm crown, 60m wide, 50m long full depth slide, running for 200m) has occurred in Mikaeri bowl around 700m altitude. The ground vegetation is bamboo grass and the grade is 40°. Risk of similar slides will rise around 900m areas over the weekend. If a climax slide occurs in Osawa or Kozan no sawa (Backbowl) 1100m area, it will be big, devastating everything on its way, debris running all the way down to the water reservoir in Annupuri. Many traverse tracks from gate 2, across Osawa, to the Backbowl were present yesterday. It is not wise to ride those potentially hazardous slopes. We may be forced to close the peak gates if people keep ignoring the heads-up and/or cannot imagine the consequences of those slides. One foolish track will lead many others to do the same and unnecessarily increase the chances of accidents to happen. Please respect the Niseko Rules in order to protect the freedom of out of bounds riding.

Hakuba Now!

Friday 27th March 2015, 8:05am
Weather conditions: Not a cloud in the sky
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 140cm
Good morning from Hakuba and it's another beautiful one.

Blue skies all day yesterday, and this morning it's pretty much the same. Clear blue skies, not a cloud to be seen above the village and mountains.

It didn't seem to get too warm yesteday considering, and temperatures dropped overnight and it felt cold out there.

They should be rising today though, and tomorrow too. A high of around +12 degrees is expected down at village base.

Over the next few days I am going to be (very probably) posting earlier reports for a number of reasons. Luckily, the weather being fairly stable and uneventful will help me in that respect!

Some forecasts have us down for rain on Sunday (chance of snow high up possibly?) so for the weekend the pick would have to be tomorrow.

What's this though, might we get some fresh snow around Sunday (while it rains down in the valley)? Keep an eye on that. Won't be sustained though with more sun from Monday.
