Minakami Now!

Monday 26th November 2007, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The large start to the season has fizzled out somewhat with warmer temperatures and sun for the past 2 days. The temperatures at Tenjindaira have remained low enough to continue snow making and preserve the last dumps that they received, but it still only has one lift open at present.

The outlook for the next 5 days is for reasonably low temperatures (2-8 deg C) with a chance of snow on Friday.

The avalanche in Hokkaido last week was a good reminder to make sure you have your avi gear ready for the upcomming season. Beacon batteries changed, probe and shovel checked and ready , first aid kit stocked. This is a great time to get out and practice your beacon finding skills. As a general guideline, you should be able to find 1 beacon in under 2 mins.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is another sunny morning here in Yuzawa, perhaps a bit more cloud than there was yesterday but still very fine and it will be nice up that on the slopes today - and probably less busy than it was over the weekend.... reports of full car parks and some queues on the first weekend of the season - but more importantly excellent conditions for November.

A high of around 10 degrees around lunchtime is forecast.

There is a chance of sleet and hopefully snow tomorrow afternoon.   Read more ...

There is no more snow to report as it has been fine weather for the most part over the weekend and today is also a sunny day with blue skies. Cold overnight but it will be relatively mild today compared to the last few.

People in the village are busy with the last-minute preparations for the new season - still due to start here on the 1st December.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Monday 26th November 2007, 10:04am
Weather conditions: warm day yesterday and overnight. rain expected this morning before temps drop and it turns to snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A warm day yesterday saw the snow pack melt some, and then freeze overnight. Rain is expected at village level this morning, before temperatures drop and turn to snow later in the afternoon. 10-15cm of snow is expected over the next 24 hours.

The Kitanomine Zone which is currently not open has had snow cats grooming it over the weekend, and it looks ready to go. However resort managements line is that they are just 'packing' the snow for a solid snow pack and will be opening in the second week of December.

Previously I had reported on here that the Furano Half pipe that is built for the World Cup will not be constructed this year (because there is no World Cup event). However, on Japanese ski maps advertising the resort it indicates a pipe will be available from mid January under a user pays system.

Some sad news from Tokachidake backcountry.

11 persons were caught in an avalanche a few days ago, 4 persons have been announced dead. The avalanche occurred on Kamihoro Kamettoku, which is the peak towards the volcano mouth to the north of Ryonkaku Onsen. The avalanche was 70m wide, 460m long and between 70cm and 200cm deep and is reported as the biggest avalanche ever for this time of year.

The group caught in the avalanche were not skiers or snowboarders, but members of the Hokkaido branch of the Japan Mountaineering Society and were doing winter climbing.

Currently the Japan Avalanche Network are investigating further, however it is thought that heavy snowfall in the lead up to last weekend, and an unstable snow pack, were contributing factors.

Tokachidake is extreme back country and avalanche prone terrain. All visitors to the region should be warned of the dangers and take appropriate care.

The excitement of the Furano ski resort opening has been tainted by this horrible sad accident.

Hakuba Now!

Monday 26th November 2007, 10:14am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies clouding over this afternoon
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No powder left here after everyone made short work of it on Friday and over the weekend. Goryu and Happo-One are both running up top with Goryu reporting a 90 cm base and Happo-One 75 cm. Tsugaike Kogen is also now part open.

Looks like it will be cooling down again this week with clouds coming in so hopefully temperatures drop up top and we see more snow working on that base.

Niseko Now!

Monday 26th November 2007, 10:30am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is trying to break through at times this morning in the village. The warmer temperatures over the weekend look to be dropping now. Today is expected to see a gradual fall in temperatures and tonight looks like it is going to fall below zero. There is a few systems beginning to move into the region now so the next few days have been marked for snowfalls.

The mountain is holding up well with the warmer temps and the front slopes are now open to the public. Up top has excellent conditions that are giving everyone a chance to workout the bugs, get those early season falls out of the way ready for the serious stuff to come.

Many of the village staff arrived over the last week and all are hard at work to make sure the village and all it's services are ready to go when our guests arrive!
