Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 26th March 2009, 9:30am
After some fresh snow last night it is a sunny morning here in Nozawa. 20cm of new snow is reported for Yamabiko where it is currently -9 degrees with a 30km/h westerly wind. It is -2 degrees in the village right now.
The weather is expected to close in again this afternoon bringing more snow right down to village level. The snow is forecast to continue through until Sunday, with more than 30cm predicted to fall over that period.
This return to wintry conditions should see the snow hanging around for a while longer at least on the top half of the resort.
The following courses are no longer available for sliding; Kandahar, Challenge 39, Kurokura, Hachiman, Schneider, Ushikubi, Skyline, Grand prix, Jumping, Mukoubayashi and Karasawa.
Kandahar, Yunomine, Challenge, Utopia, Nagasaka link and Karasawa lifts are closed. Read more ...

Snow started to fall lightly yesterday afternoon and got heavier into the evening with about 5cms falling down here at village level. Views this morning were mid-winter with all the trees white and everywhere covered with snow. Blue skies since early morning and warm sun has melted much of that now. Warm temperatures will continue for the rest of the day.
It's spring vacation time and the lines stretched around the block yesterday as students lined up to buy lift tickets. It was one of those days in the mountains when all you only had to wait a bit if the weather didn't suit you - it shifted from sunny to snowing all day. Overnight, 20 cm of fresh powder and the beech and birch branches are frosted white this morning. The season's not over yet.
Route 18 was wet, but not icy this earlier morning and should be drying out by now. The section between Myokokogen and Nakago was temporarily closed due to an accident. Off 18 and up toward the mountain roads are packed with 15 to 20 cm of snow, which will turn slushy if the sun stays out.
The forecast for the week ahead is still calling for light snow daily through Sunday at least and snow showers Monday, so it looks like conditions will be fairly good the next to last weekend of this season. This morning should offer some good, if crowded, runs as temperatures are below freezing under mostly sunny skies around the area. Looks like northwesterlies and more snow on the way this afternoon.
Heavy rain last night made way to snow it seems overnight as this mornining there is a sprinkling of snow down to town level - perhaps up to 5cm in places. It almost feels like early season again as the mountains that were brown/green yesterday now have a white dusting look to them. It surely won't last long though as right now there are bright blue skies all around and very fine weather. The forecast still insists that we will see snow again by the end of the day and into tomorrow, so no complaints there.
Naeba are reporting 5-10cm of new snow while Kagura is apparently enjoying 15-20cm of fresh snow since yesterday - so conditions up there this morning should be really good. It will all help lengthen the season too.
After a cold start it is warming up with a forecast high of around 5 degrees in town. As things cloud over later on it should get colder again with a cold night forecast.
Nighta tonight is open at the following resorts in Yuzawa: Naeba Iwappara

In a big contrast to this mornings fine and sunny weather with blue skies, it is now snowing - and actually quite heavily! From around lunchtime it started clouding over and by 1pm light flakes of snow were falling and right now there are some fairly big winter-like flaks of snow falling.... it's even sticking at town level! Snow is also forecast right through until tomorrow evening and possibly beyond, so who knows how this will turn out - the more the better of course.
It was good to see some snow falling properly and its been like Winter again with minus temperatures and icicles stuck to the car. Cold up in the alpine today with our weather station reading -12.5 at 2080m and snow is forecast from the early afternoon continuing through to tomorrow morning.
Still some decent runs to be had with Goryu's top slopes nicely groomed and 47 well-manicured as always. Happo has been a mixed bag of moguls but when they get the groomers out there's lots of good times to be had hitting the corduroy and cat tracks and jumping the dirt patches. Might have even been a bit of fresh snow this morning...
Over at individual resorts:
Lower slopes at Happo, Iwatake, Norikura and Tsugaike are now closed due to the lack of snow at lower areas.
Over at Goryu, a number of courses at Iimori are now closed and the Snow Park closed on the 24th for the season. Iimori is planning for the remaining areas to be open until Tuesday 31st March.
Nighta at the Toomi area of Goryu is now closed for the season (and perhaps optimistically they are saying that if conditions improve then they might re-open!)
We'll bring you more news of when resorts plan to be open soon...

Cloudy with light snow showers
The perfect start to yesterday did deteriorate later in the day as cloud and a few light snow showers moved over the region. The snowfalls that were expected last night largely missed Niseko, mostly passing through further south of us. So there's only been a dusting but there will still be some good quality snow up higher on the mountain. Southerly and westerly facing slopes will have a sun crust from yesterdays clear weather though. Still great conditions out there for this time of year and further snowfalls are expected today and tomorrow.
Well there was perhaps 15cm or so of fresh snow yesterday and overnight fall on the slopes of Shiga Kogen - a welcome cover for the hard icy slopes we had been experiencing just previous to that. This morning started off cold and bright and sunny, with the temperature rising since then. It could well be back on it's way down again though as clouds are forecast to move in and we might be getting more snowfall before the day is over and also tomorrow. So winter has quite given up yet!
The following resorts plans to be open for nighta tonight: Ichinose Family Kumanoyu
It almost feels like winter again! Snow on the ground this morning and with Naeba reporting 5-10cm and Kagura reporting 15-20cm of fresh snow on the slopes, conditions out there will have been good today with all gondolas operating as planned.
The day started off cold and actually quite sunny in parts, though snow clouds moved in fairly quickly this afternoon and it is currently snowing again - with more forecast for tonight and tomorrow and quite possibly even beyond that into the weekend. And, more snow even later on next week too. Lets hope it turns out to be the case. So basically improved conditions out there with that new fluffy snow to enjoy. Read more ...
