Furano Now!

Weather conditions: bluebird day. fantastic snow quality. bright sunshine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow continued to fall yesterday afternoon which left another 8cm in the village, and a light top up over night as well. There is blue skies today, a perfect seeing day. The volcano is smoking on the Tokachidake ranges and the view is spectacular. Bring out your cameras today.

Yesterday the snow was fantastic. Check out some pics below.

Today is going to be a cold day on the mountain. The wind has switched to the north, and windchill is expected to be around minus 12 at the base, and colder again up the top. So rug up today of all days. The blue sky and sunshine can be a little misleading.

Ice bars in the village are now in operation. Each guest to Furano is entitled to a free drink at Kan Kan Mura, so ask your hotel for a drink token.

Yesterday was a great day to be on the slopes. Once again, very few people were up there enjoying the wonderful conditions. Fresh powder, although quite heavy, was very easy to find. There was a thick fog in the village, but just a few hundred metres up vision was absolutely perfect with spectacular views out into the valley.

Freeze thaw conditions are expected today and tomorrow right up to the top of the mountain. The big news is we are forecast for 4 days of snow starting on Friday night. Hopefully with this the rest of the mountain will open up.

I am especially keen to see the Nagasaka slope open for New Years Eve night skiing!   Read more ...

It's a frosty morning here and overcast early on but will likely clear up as we have a fine day forecast today (and also tomorrow at the moment). Around -1 here in town with the main gelende up at Kagura reporting -9 and Gala -4. So it looks like it will be a cold but fine one today.

There is no fresh snow to report though and it is still looking like it will be at least the weekend before we can expect any.

The Santas will be gone this morning making way for some New Year decorations as people gear up for that big holiday here.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud, overcast
New snowfall: --

It is a cold morning up here with temperatures below zero across the board. No new snow to report, but conditions good out there after the snow of the previous few days and temperatures staying low.

Not much else to report this morning. Christmas Day wasn't perhaps as busy as people expected and today looks set to be the same. From tomorrow though more and more people will be making their way onto the slopes in the run up to the New Year.

There is still icy and packed snow on the roadsides and a lot of slipping going on out there on the roads so care needs to be taken.   Read more ...

Snow depth: --
No new snow to report this morning but it's hovering around 0 degrees and a chilly morning. A mix of cloud and some blue sky but the top of the mountain isn't visible at the moment, with almost no wind just a chill in the air.

Good conditions prevailing out there and now almost all of the Naeba resort courses are open, though lift operations will depend on the day and conditions. Today the Number 1 gondola and Dragondola are working but Number 2 is taking a rest.

Nighta tonight until 9pm, so a long day on the slopes for some!

Tomorrow looks like it will also be a fine day, and we're hoping for snow over the weekend.   Read more ...

Merry Xmas! (slightly belated)

The snow fell for most of the day on the 24th, bringin aroun 30cm of fresh snow to the higher ski areas. Yesterday was an overcast day with high cloud and a stable temperature (0 deg C) which has preserved the snow nicely. Last night the clouds cleared for a starry sky with the full moon lighting the valley. Temperatures dropped to -8 deg C overnight creating a thick frost layer this morning.

Today and the next 2 days are forecast for sunny clear skies with stable cool temperatures. The snow is forecast to start on Saturday (29th) and continue for 4 days. This is the snow that the lower ski areas have been waiting for and just in time for the new years rush.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We had another day of firm cover on the hill yesterday with the higher slopes offering some softer, loose snow and the lower slopes getting hard and slick. The skies turned cloudy by mid morning but the sun managed to burn through from time to time. There was *technically* snow falling most of the day, but it was more like Christmas decoration than actual snow. It looked nice but overall it was nothing to write home about.

The charts aren't showing anything significant for the next three days, but there is a good chance of some reasonable precipitation on the weekend, which should coincide with a big deep low moving in from the west at about the same time. If the low can sustain for a couple of days we are in for some good snowfalls. Fingers crossed...

The avalanche risk is reported as being low, but nonetheless everyone should take care and avoid doing anything too desperate to get away from the the groomers. It's going to be a cold day despite the clear skies so make sure you keep warm.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Blue Skies

Bluebird day today, no fresh snow but nice groomed runs. Relatively quiet day on the slopes after the long weekend and Christmas. Snow is possible over the weekend. Enjoy...

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Nice clear day and cold temperatures. Good day for hiking and snow pit evaluations. Still watch out for the lee slopes which got a heavy load from the winds and unstable cornices. Exercise caution on solar aspects as the day progresses and remember only go out the back with the right gear and a team of people who know what they're doing.
