Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm

Morning from Geto.

Yesterday ended up being a pretty wet day. :(

Light rain persisting this morning along with a stronger wind and limited visibility earlier on.

The rain is due to ease off this morning which is good news and hopefully things will get clearer and the wind will be less too. Would be nice.

Not many days left now.

Golden Week

'Golden Week' is approaching. But what exactly is it?

Golden Week is a period from the end of April through early May containing a number of national holidays. Those holidays are as follows:

- 29th April is 'Showa Day' (Showa-no-hi), the birthday of former Emperor Showa
- 3rd May is 'Constitution Day' (Kenpo-kinenbi)
- 4th May is 'Greenery Day' (Midori-no-hi)
- 5th May is 'Children's Day' (Kodomo-no-hi)

What this means for 2018 is that most people will enjoy two long weekends - 3 days this upcoming weekend and then 4 days off the weekend after:

Long Weekend #1: Saturday 28th April - Monday 30th April
Long Weekend #2: Thursday 3rd - Sunday 6th May

Some people may even be lucky enough to have/take Tuesday and Thursday off next week, giving them a long 9 day holiday!

The weather is often really good over the Golden Week period and of course the end of Golden Week is also the end of ski lift operations here in Niseko.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 26th April 2018, 8:09am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, due to clear up
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Yuzawa.

First of all a bit of news. Once Golden Week starts this weekend, Naeba was planning on being open daily until 6th May, but that's not going to be happening. They have announced that they will now be open from Saturday (28th April) until Monday (30th April) - and that Monday will be the last day of the season. Not entirely unexpected with the weather we have had this spring.

On to the weather...

The roads are still wet this morning but the rain has eased off (outside where I am anyway) and it is very cloudy around town. I see there's some blue sky showing through up at Kagura though and the forecast does show clearing weather conditions so it might well turn into a fine day.

It's quite chilly this morning and temps are in single digits. A high of around 17C forecast later on.

All areas of Kagura should be open as planned today.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 26th April 2018, 8:17am
Weather conditions: Mostly cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Hakuba.

Yesterday started with rain but it eased off fairly early on in the day.

Damage has been done though, as it will at this stage of the season. Some will be disappointed that the top Riesen Grat course at Happo-one now needs to be closed and there's more ground showing through in places too. Now that Goryu aren't trying to keep that lower Toomi course open back down to the Gondola, the snow down on that narrow strip has now been quickly disappearing and will be totally gone pretty soon I reckon. You can just about still ski or board back down to base at Hakuba 47. It's patchy though...

It will be interesting to see if the resorts can all remain open through until 6th May as planned.

Anyway it is a cloudy start to the day but clearer skies are forecast today.

Clearer and more sunshine along with warming temperatures are likely as we hit Golden Week...

Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm

Morning from Nozawa.

Some rain has been lingering this morning - and not actually falling when I walked out just now - and conditions are due to be clearer during the day today. (The resort was reporting light rain on the top of the mountain as of 7am).

And they should warm up a bit too; it's actually feeling rather cold this morning and I see the resort are saying it's just +2C up top at Yamabiko.

Lifts should be opening as planned this morning. Webcams show some limited visibility early on... should clear up if the forecasts are right.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 26th April 2018, 9:04am
Weather conditions: Earlier cloudy, now turning fine
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Shiga Kogen.

Blimey, there's a whole lot of news to report to you this morning as a handful of resorts have cut back on their season.

Anyway, here goes:

Terakoya, Ichinose Diamond and Tannenomori have already closed.

Ichinose Family will only be open until... today!

Mammoth will be opening now just from this coming Saturday until Monday 30th April.

The quad lift at Kumanoyu will now not be open for skiing, and will be operating just for 'summer lift' operations.

The Yokoteyama and Shibutoge lifts will be open until Monday 30th April -- possibly beyond then, depending on the snow.

Phew. It all seems kind of sudden and whirlwind and a bit of a shock, but at the same time it's not that surprising given the weather we have had this spring season. We might even see some more changes...

The info below has also been updated with specific lift operations.

---

And how about this... some very light snow has reportedly being falling earlier this morning and it is cold. Right now just lots of cloud.

---

You can get to Shiga Kogen from the south via Manza, but the part of Route 292 that connects Shiga Kogen and Kusatsu in Gunma is currently closed.

---

Planned ski resort operations in Shiga Kogen. Note that all are subject to change - please check with resorts:
