Another sunny start to the day in Niseko with temperatures similar to yesterday, 6degrees C in the village and 3degrees C at the top of the resort.
There is a strong haze in the air today, this is ‘kosa’ or yellow sand which is carried by the winds for thousands of kilometres from the deserts of Central Asia and western China, giving the surrounding mountains a silhouetted look about them.
Winds are light at the moment but are looking to strengthen throughout the day, with light snow predicted for top half of the resort tonight. Read more ...

Cloudy with rain threatening
After the sunshine and heat early in the week the weather has cooled a bit and its currently cloudy here, 8 degrees, with rain threatening this afternoon. Aokiko lake is warming up and we got in the first eskimo rolls of the season yesterday and a team has gone out on the canyoning virgin run of the year today.
Canoeists, kayakers, rafters and fishermen have been out in Lake Aokiko brushing the cobwebs off their strokes and fishing poles and some taking the first dip of the year. The mountaintops are white and everyday the valley is getting greener. Cherries are starting to bloom and will be at mankai (full bloom) through the Golden week holiday. So you may want to gather the gang for some morning skiing, followed by a paddle on the lake, mt. bike ride or even some cold water canyoning before enjoying some afternoon 'Hanami' in the Northern Japanese Alps. The weather for Golden Week at this stage looking fine with temperatures pushing back up into the 20's.
It's no longer possible to ski to the bottom at Goryu meaning Gondola trips down from the mountain. As most years 47 still has clean runs to the bottom and should do until closing at the end of Golden Week. The Terrain Parks on Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike are open and in great spring condition.
Temperatures are rising and water is freely flowing in the snow pack thus slab avalanches to the ground are a definite possibility. Watch out for those precariously hanging slopes of snow on steep convexing terrain and under glide cracks. Move quickly through areas in terrain trap valley bottoms. There will be general loose wet slides on all slopes as surface snow temperatures rise and due to the snow pack being isothermal, ( all right at 0 degrees from ground to surface) Slides can be very big at this time of year so play smart.
Well it is a fine and bright morning here, but unfortunately some strong winds are preventing Gala Yuzawa to open today. All of Kagura is open though, so the choices for today are Kagura and the small parts of Naeba that are still open.
The Dragondola connecting Naeba and Tashiro will be open every day now until the end of the season at Naeba and Tashiro, May 6th.
The forecast for tomorrow is mixed with a bit of rain, cloud and sun in there - so it could really go any way. Hopefully the winds will be weaker allowing Gala to open. Read more ...

We had fine weather and very warm weather conditions for most of the week, with just a little rain. Today it has been a bit of a mix - rain/sleet - even snow! - earlier on higher up but cloud for most of the day down below. Some fairly strong blowy winds from time to time higher up but that has not affected the operations at Kagura or Naeba.
The Dragondola will be open now every day through until the end of the season at Naeba on 6th May.
The only snow remaining on the lower slopes of Naeba now is the snow on the courses that they have open (it looks similar to how it does before the season starts).
It looks like a mixed bag for tomorrow but very possibly fine weather and then a lot of sun and warm temperatures once more lined up into the week.
PLEASE NOTE: We'll continue to make updates to this Naeba Now! page occasionally, but from now on until the end of the season at Kagura the daily reporting from the Yuzawa area will move over to the Yuzawa Now! report section, so remember to check out that page as well for the latest. Read more ...
