A quiet Monday evening, and Furano is poised for its first snowfall of the year. The surrounding mountains have been coated off and on in a wintery shade of white for weeks, but now it is the village's turn for a foretaste of old man winter. Temperatures have been hovering around 6 degrees, but threaten to drop to around 1 or 2 by the wee morning hours, just barely cold enough for snow. We should see some big, wet flakes come sunrise, right on time for the first snowfall of the year. The snow is forecast to turn to rain by the afternoon and then turn back to a messy wintery mix before tapering off for the evening. Something about the smell of snow in the air puts me in the mood for winter. We'll see how it all plays out tomorrow, but here's hoping for a small sample of what's in store for this season.
