Clear, some cloud, bit of sun
Hello and good morning from Hirafu and I am happy to report another 18cm of snow measured since my report yesterday morning. It carried on snowing most of the day yesterday and there was some more during the night.
The snow has eased off now though and the sun has actually been making an appearance. It is generally a more grey-tinted clear kind of sky at the moment with some low cloud remaining here and there. The temperature is currently around 0C and shouldn't be rising much above that during the day.
We're expecting current conditions to continue for the next day or so, with snowfall returning tomorrow - and it's looking rather promising as well.
Hopefully it might bring enough for things at Grand Hirafu to open this weekend. Please note though that there is no word just yet on the planned opening of ski lifts - as it stands we need more snow for that - but I will be posting regular reports from now to keep you updated.
Planned opening dates for the Niseko resorts:
Niseko Grand Hirafu: as soon as there's enough snow Niseko Annupuri: Saturday 28th November Niseko Village: Tuesday 1st December Niseko HANAZONO: Saturday 5th December
'Nighta' should be starting on Saturday 12th December Read more ...

Lots of cloud
Hurray! It is good to see some snow on the Kagura webcam this morning. A thin cover by the looks - the resort is reporting 3cm - but white all the same on the main course. They have started the snow making machines as well on that main Kagura run in an effort to get things started up there fairly soon.
Down here at town level in Yuzawa it was a pretty miserable day yesterday weather wise and no snow to be seen on the mountains around town. Lots of cloud around this morning but it is not raining. Rain is expected again though later on today and through tomorrow. Kagura is expecting snowfall though so hopefully a good amount of fresh cm can build up over there.
It's colder today and probably won't reach 10 degrees though tomorrow is forecast to be warmer.
Planned opening dates for resorts in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City (by date):
Saturday 21st November: Kagura (Mitsumata) - 1100m course at Mitsumata open with snow mats (no snow yet)
The early cloud burned off and it was bluebird for a while, but now partly cloudy.
Winter has certainly arrived in Furano
And it's as if she never left. If you have come to ski Furano in the past, I can tell you that today it looks like it always looks. The snow clearers have been out, the footpaths already have stacked snow along them, the parking lots around town are cleared, and life is going on as normal, as if nothing even happened. Furano locals are clearly very good at this.
On the mountain, the resort would have benefited from the 30 or so centimetres that fell at the base in Kitanomine Village. We are seeking updated numbers from the resort, but the beauty of Japan is they really don't worry about measuring such things. At least in Furano they don't. A lot of snow is a lot of snow. Once the ski season gets going, what really matters in Furano, because the snow is dry here in the centre of Hokkaido, is whether or not there is any fresh to play in off piste or in the nearby back country. Today there most certainly is fresh snow. My family went up to Tokachi Dake this morning for some turns.
At about 7am it was -5 degrees at Kitanomine Village, so about -9 or -10 atop the resort.
