Minakami Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 7:43am
Weather conditions: overcast and lightly snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow started falling yesterday afternoon and around 14:00 and has continued through to this morning and is forecast to keep falling to around midday. The rate has been very light so only around 5cm has settled in the valley so far with around 15-20cm in the upper mountains. There is a light Northerly wind and the visibility ranges from good on the lower ski areas to poor at higher areas. Visibility should become increasingly better during the day with the dispersion of clounds around midday.

Looking towards the weekend, the forecast shows a low front moving over Japan from the West which should bring snow to higher areas in Minakami.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 8:19am
Weather conditions: Snowing lightly.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another cold night with 5+cm of fine, dry snow falling in town.We have received around 10cm in the last 24hours down here and around 15cm on the mountain top. The forecast for today is snow in the morning then an overcast afternoon with the skies clearing tonight, giving us an even colder night to come.

The conditions on the mountain yesterday were fantastic; we had a good 15cm of extremely light fresh powder on the higher areas and there were very few people on the mountain so fresh tracks were to be found through most of the day. At 1pm they closed one of the main runs and groomed out all the bumps that were starting to form in the fresh snow then opened it again by 1.45pm and it was a beautifull smooth run from top to bottom - great for those who like some speed racing!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 8:28am
Weather conditions: White Sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning! A cold one at that! -5 this morning with a steady breeze coming from the North West. There's a fluttering of large snow flakes and further we've received 7cm at the village. It looks to be light snow for the rest of the day with these white light conditions. So it will be all about the orange filter in your goggles today, which will hopefully get you across those hidden bumps safely! Not much to be seen of Naeba from Asagai either.

Expect an excellent morning tomorrow, with the forecast sunny day. Up early please (do your bit), as the weather seems to be trying a little for you - prepping up that mountain for your enjoyment!

Looks to be more snow the day after??

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 8:29am
Weather conditions: Broken cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A trace of fluffy new snow was observed this morning in the upper Hira Kawa valley. Some sort of a centimetre or more fell above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain yesterday afternoon and more may have followed it during the evening. A ski-tour party is going there again today (same guide as yesterday) and will report observations.

The sky ths morning is a bit more than 50% covered in cloud ("broken cloud"). the forecast is for this to become overcast for the bulk of the day. In the valley bottom the temperatures arre forecast to be between -3C and 0C, with light west to north-west winds and no precipitation.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds
Temperature: Present: -4.1 C
Maximum: 1.0 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind: Calm
Winds aloft: Moderate (apparently) from the north-west
Precipitation: S -1
Barometer and trend: 919 hPa and rising slowly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): Trace
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 65 cm
Foot penetration: 15 cm
Surface: new snow, size 2.0 mm
Density of surface snow: not enough to measure
Crust: breaking down under 3 cm of dry snow

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Moderate

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Low

N.B. Surface hoar is being found (down 20 or so cm) on northern exposures that usually reacts to compression testa as a "resistant planar "shear but occasionally it reacts as a "sudden planar" shear.

Travel Advisory:
the snow pack is generally settling well but please review yesterday's "Travel Advisory". The Avalanche Course senior instructor is particularly concerned with the variability of the buried surface hoar. The course participants have been digging lots of holes and done many many compression tests. There is something out
there. The south exposure crusts are breaking down slowly and there is definitely recrystallization taking place around these crusts. Right now this is not a major concern but a sudden heavy load increase could change this picture. Yesterday on lower angle south exposures above 1,800 m a.s.l. in the shade of coniferous trees the snow was still powdery and the skiing was good as long as you read the shade affect correctly. there was 35 cm foot penetration at 1,800 m a.s.l. on the north exposure.

Niseko Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 8:47am
Weather conditions: Overcast with light snowfall.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Today has dawned brilliantly! Last night 15-20cms of nice dry snow fell with little wind. Early this morning the sun was out and blue skies were showing through. I'm jealous of any getting out there this morning. Todays snow on top of the 10 cms yesterday will provide some great conditions today.

Currently its about -5 degrees in town and -12 on the hill and the visibility is good for much of the mountain. Again up higher the visibility will be variable and the winds will be moderate. Todays forecast is for generally overcast conditions with some snow showers through the day. This should continue into the evening. Tomorrow looks like the snow will ease and it will be mostly cloudy.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 9:05am
Weather conditions: Snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A snowy start to the day today in Nozawa, and a welcome top up for the base depths on the mountain. Right now on Yamabiko there is 170cm down 10cm from the morning yesterday, and on Uenotaira 135cm which picked up 5cm overnight. Snow is still falling consistently and the visibility is understandably poor, with near white out conditions on Yamabiko. The temperatures are -1C in the village and between -6 and
-7C on the mountain.

The forecast maintains that snow will continue falling throughout the day but will stop tomorrow morning. The skies will be cloudy Friday and Saturday with snow to begin again Saturday evening.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is about 5cm of fresh snow on the top of cars that have been out overnight this morning and the trees on the mountains are looking nice and snowy out there. At the moment it is snowing - it's that kind of snowfall that we have a seen a lot of this season, ie. light snow that doesn't do much for those snow depths.

The new snow is of course welcome and it will mean that conditions on the slopes will be better today. The forecast is for snow to continue all day into tonight with tomorrow looking like it will be a fine sunny one.

As the forecast stands now, we have cloud/rain forecast for the weekend, but I hope to be able to bring you changes to that particular piece of news by the end of tomorrow!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 25th January 2007, 16:40pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, fair
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Apologies for the delay in posting the report today.

We have seen some quite changeable conditions today. It started out with some light snow falling (there was a sprinkling overnight) and then the clouds cleared up and there was some blue sky on view from time to time. It has once more clouded over at the moment here in the central part of Shiga Kogen.

Temperatures around the same as they have been the last week or so - at the moment it is -4 degrees outside the building.

Tomorrow looks set to be a fine and sunny day.   Read more ...
