Minakami Now!

Monday 24th March 2008, 8:15am
Weather conditions: Overcast with some rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a warm sunny day yesterday the rain moved in this morning. With the remainder of the week looking warm it seems that the last snow storm will not eventuate in March. Many of the ski areas have been setting late finishing dates because of the large snow pack but many will be revising dates this week.

Backcountry Advisory
Be wary of wet slides and large glide cracks (crevasse) opening up, especially on convex rolls.

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: overcast, chilly winds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Overcast, windy, and feels like it is going to rain. The weather report is for rain tonight, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts raining early afternoon.

The snow didn't have a chance to freeze last night, as temperatures stayed warm, so expect soft conditions over the entire mountain today.

Night Skiing is now finished on the Kitanomine Zone, it is only on the Furano Zone now through until Saturday night.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 24th March 2008, 8:46am
Weather conditions: Cloudy & Raining
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a nice weekend rain began falling pretty heavily sometime this morning and looks set to continue through the day clearing however as the day progresses. 5 degrees in the valley and Goryu patrol measured plus 4 on top and at the base this morning with precipitation falling as rain pretty much to the top with some strong North/North-easterly gusts. Forecast to clear through the day and for better weather tomorrow.

Backcountry travel advisory:

Temperatures are still warm and currently only getting warmer. There are big holes & cracks showing and South faces are looking devastated. Lots of water sliding under cracks and supported slopes are sitting on cracks and water. Still keep an eye on those parts of the South faces that are waiting to come down with these temperature rises and rain on the slopes. It is still important to time traverses under South slopes early in the day or on days of cool temperatures. North Faces high in the alpine have not been receiving the same solar radiation and snow temps are still relatively cool. Be careful of intense wind loading on the Northern aspects high in the Alpine. A lot of them have fallen but some cornices are still big and will come down with the heat and rain.

Watch solar radiated slopes, and around rocks and cornices as they warm through the day.

Naeba Now!

Monday 24th March 2008, 10:28am
Weather conditions: white sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Rain. If it's 1 word in the report this morning that will be it. Absolutely chucking it down it is, I woke thinking I was back in the UK and all was normal, but no, not quite.

2 degrees in the village with pretty much no wind. The Naeba mountain has been sheared off at the top of the challenge course area by low cloud so we only have half of the mountain today - the other half is left to the imagination - not so good for the people that are actually up there now in decent, in the rain wiping their goggles only in vain, as it looks like a 5 meter visibility scenario from here. Good look to all ye who venture out today, we're all staying in doors with the Asian teas and the internet. 'See you tomorrow outside'.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 24th March 2008, 10:33am
Weather conditions: Rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's raining steadily in the village this morning. Apparently it is raining at Uenotaira too. The camera system monitoring the mountain and providing feeds to the village and web have broken, so we can't really tell what it's like up there.

The forecast is for the rain to stop this morning and temperatures to drop a little. There will hopefully be a little scattered snow throughout the week. It is still miles away but Saturday it is meant to get down to -7 at the top, and to snow a little. What what what?   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 24th March 2008, 10:52am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cloudy start to the day here. A few spots of rain, but it is holding off as I write this now and the sun is out at the moment. So changeable weather this morning with rain/cloud forecast for the rest of this morning and this afternoon.

The winds are quite strong this morning, with Gala Yuzawa and Tashiro closed - Kagura Mitsumata is open up to the Kagura No 1 quad lift. Those winds should die down later this afternoon and winds shouldn't be a problem tomorrow, when fine sunny weather should be back with us.

We should see a top temperature of about 9 or 10 degrees today with that rising a little higher tomorrow.    Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 24th March 2008, 10:53am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not the nicest day here in Niseko so far with overcast conditions and very strong winds at the top of the resort. The strong winds have forced the closure of many of the lifts. The highest lifted point in Hirafu at the moment is the Ace #2 Quad chair.

Some light snow is forecast for tonight however the freezing level is around 1000 metres above sea level so only the very top of the resort will get snow.

Temperatures have dropped since yesterday and it looks like we will have sub zero temps for most of the week at the top of the resort which will keep the base in good condition.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 24th March 2008, 13:06pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There's a lot of cloud around this morning.

We were treated to some sleet/rain overnight and while there were spots of rain just before right now it isn't raining but still fairly dark and cloudy and foggy in places. Temperatures are over 0 degrees in all areas of Shiga Kogen from early on, so it's another mild day but with a bit of wind making it feel colder than it has been and has been affecting lift operations in some areas of Shiga Kogen (including the gondolas at Yakebitaiyama).

Nighta at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen tonight:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Kumanoyu   Read more ...
