Weather conditions: overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterdays snow actually continued for most of the day but at the village level it was so light that it did not amount to more than 2cm.

The sky remains clouded today with relatively cool temperatures and light northerly winds. Snow is expected to start from late this evening and continue through to early Thursday morning but it likelt to remain fairly light. It may bring up to 20cm in the upper mountains.

Weather conditions: Snowing heavily.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is a good 5cm of beautiful powder on the ground in town this morning so should be another fantastic day up on the mountain. No wind at all overnight and temps down to around -15; perfect conditions for seting up some perfect snow.

It is snowing heavily as a write and predicted to carry on through the day, can't wait to get up on the mountain sometime today.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud, overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's colder this morning than it has been of late, currently -2 outside, and at the moment there is a cover of overcase cloud in the region.

There seems to be a sprinking of snow on the mountains again and things are frosted over at town level. Even with snow falling on and off for a fair part of yesterday though there is no change to the snow depth numbers at resorts to report this morning. Places higher up got the best sprinkling with Gala, Kagura and Naeba being are the places that will currently have the latest topup of snow.

The forecast is telling us that we might be in for some snowfall tonight, so fingers crossed that is right!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 24th January 2007, 8:59am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was a nice top up of 5-10cms overnight of some really nice powder. Right now it has stopped snowing and the cloud cover has lifted to bring good visibility to the lower half of the mountain. Up high it will remain cloudy with a moderate wind around the peak. Its around -4 degrees in the village and -12 degrees up on the hill.

The day is forecast to remain overcast with generally light winds. Not a lot of snow is expected throughout the day however overnight the snow should return to give a similar amount tomorrow morning.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 24th January 2007, 9:32am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow expected last night didn’t arrive and it still isn’t snowing this morning. The conditions on the mountain yesterday were fantastic however today will not likely be as good. The weather is threatening so hopefully by mid morning we have snow fall at least on Yamabiko. The temperatures on the mountain this morning range from -5C on Yamabiko to -4C down at Uenotaira. The visibility is considerably good. Once again very few people heading up to the slopes so there is plenty of room on the mountain and as usual no lift lines.

The forecast is still for light snow this morning getting slightly heavier tonight. Tomorrow should be lightly snowing as well. Friday morning will be sunny but snow should begin again on Friday night.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 24th January 2007, 9:39am
Weather conditions: cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Gloomy.....that's the best way to describe todays start. It's overcast and a very cold -3. It feels a bit colder due to the wind that seems to be picking up, then dying then picking up again. No new snowfall overnight but we are expecting more snow throughout the day. Lets hope it comes sooner rather than later. The top of Naeba is clearly visible at the moment but as we all know that can change in a matter of minutes.

The snow was crunchy underfoot this morning so riding conditions maybe a little hard further up the gelende, so lets be careful out there!

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 24th January 2007, 10:51am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A grey sky over the Hime Kawa valley was evident in the first thin light of dawn. There is no new snow and the winds in the alpine yesterday are reported to have been "strong from the north-west". The green and easier blue runs benefited from the recent new snow but the steeper piste is a tad rough.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -5.5 C
Maximum: 3.0 C
Minimum: -7.0 C
Wind: Light from the west
Winds aloft: Moderate from the north-west
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 920 hPa and righty
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 66 cm
Foot penetration: 12 cm
Surface: new snow, size 3.0 mm
Density of surface snow: not enough to measure
Crust:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Considerable

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. As noted yesterday: the hazard may increase with daytime warming and/or increased load. The loading increase would be a result of wind transportation, so look for lee pockets at and above tree line.

Travel Advisory:
The Level One (professional) avalanche Course reports that they observed high winds in the alpine from the north-west. This is loading the south-east exposures. On the north exposures at tree line there is 20 cm of storm snow over a layer of surface hoar (size 3 to 6 mm) standing erect in the snow pack. This is reacting to the compression test with "easy" to "moderate" results. Down 40 cm from the surface is another shear that reacts to compression tests with "moderate" to "high" resistant planar results. On the south exposures there was melting at the surface to at least 2,000 m a.s.l. The upper snow pack on this exposure is composed of a lamination of melt-freeze crusts. There was faceting observed around these crusts.

The high winds from the north-west are definitely transporting snow. Beware the lee slope.

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the fine start yesterday clouds moved in and we got another light sprinkling of snow before this morning and a lot of frost earlier on as it was a cold morning with a cold breeze.

This morning is overcast in the region and according to the forecast it will be similar conditions all day, though right now the sun seems to be making an effort to appear through the clouds. Tomorrow is forecast to be a fine day with a chance of some light snowfall at times.    Read more ...
