Light snows yielding to clouds only
A light dusting last night has smoothed the crispy stuff out somewhat, but the early bird definitely catches the worm today. Temperatures will skyrocket to 5 degrees by 2pm, bringing on slushy conditions on all slopes.
A winter pattern is slated to bang in at some point, but perhaps not until the evening. Stay tuned. Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!

Light cloud, overcast
It is an overcast morning here in Nozawa. Light cloud shrouds Kenashi-san and it is currently -4 degrees up the top where the snow depth is reported at 240cm and there is a southerly of around 20 km/h. It is currently 0 degrees in the village.
The wind is predicted to strengthen somewhat and turn southwesterly, bringing with it some light precipitation falling as rain on the lower slopes and a mixture of snow and rain at the top. The rain will continue through Wednesday but as the freezing level drops snow will be falling lower and lower down the mountain, eventually snowing at village level by Tomorrow evening.
Yesterday saw very low visibility with thick fog closing in for most of the day around the top of the mountain. Temperatures however did not rise to high and so the snow pack has not suffered too much. It remains to be seen how much damage will result from the precipitation today.
All lifts will operate except Mizunashi.
All courses are open except Kurokura and Hachiman.
Just a bit of snow yesterday then as it kept fairly mild during the day and we are on for more of the same today with similar temperatures early on. It is just cloudy at the moment and.... well, that's about all really!
Next snow to look forward to? Perhaps some tomorrow and Friday, but a heavy snowfall isn't currently on the 6 day forecast. Conditions remain fairly good though not what we would expect for mid-late February. Just keep those temps down please...
The following resort plans to be open for nighta tonight: Ichinose Family
Official resort snow depths as of 24th February 09:
Yesterday we had that snow/sleet/rain for most of the day. Not the best day of the season that's for sure, though as has often been the case this season up top new sprinklings of snow were seen.
It is just cloudy this morning and about 2 degrees, with a high of around 6 degrees forecast for later on this afternoon. There's a chance of rain this afternoon for a short while, but lets not think about that. ;)
Wind-wise, right now things don't seem so bad in town, but there are some strong winds forecast for all of today (SSE 6m/s) and into this evening which are affecting resort operations. The Dragondola and Tashiro (winds of 10-15m/s) are closed this morning as well. Mitsumata is open from the Ropeway to the No1 quad lift. GALA Yuzawa is also closed. Other resorts seem to be open though lifts may slow or stop at times depending on the winds.
Nighta tonight is at the following resorts in Yuzawa: Naeba Iwappara
In Minamiuonuma just to the north, nighta at: Ishiuchi Maruyama Centleisure Maiko Joetsu Kokusai
Yesterday was certainly one of the great days of the season. Clear skies and deep powder, it just doesn't get any better. A few light snow showers did move through throughout the day but there was plenty of sunshine which was welcome after a week of storms. The sun will have created a bit of a crust on some south facing slopes so beware of this today. Last night was mostly fine and quite cold. This morning a bit of snow has moved in but this should clear as the morning progresses but later in the afternoon more snow is expected to hit the region as another weak low approaches from the west. The snow should continue through the night into tomorrow. The new snow will be very welcome as much of the mountain was tracked out yesterday although there should still be some great lines off the peak. With winds remaining light over the last 24 hours the snowpack has stabilised and avalanche danger today is low. A stronger low pressure system is expected to start affecting our region on Saturday and bring good snowfalls into early next week.
Cloudy today, the top half of the Naeba hill is not to be seen anywhere due to low cloud. Not too cold either only -3 in the village. No new snow either. However this doesn't seem to be stopping the early risers as whisp off to ride the unridden sections of the mountain.
The Dragondola appears to be closed whilst both 1 and 2 gondolas at Naeba are open. The top quad at kagura is closed today due to winds. Read more ...

High overcast, almost sunny.
No new snow overnight, but it was nice and cold last night at -14 C. Temps will approach freezing today and tomorrow.
High overcast, and very light winds.
The views are spectacular again today, so get up on the hill and have some fun.
Some light snow fell in the later half of the day today and continues in the upper mountains. It only amounted to around 5cm but it all counts!
It looks like similar weather on the cards for tomorrow with temperatures remaining cool and some precipitation expected in the afternoon.
The snow conditions above 1300m have been preserved nicely with the cold weather ans there is some powder to be found in the backcountry and in trees close to the slopes up high. Looks like temperature may rise on Thursday but this shouldn't effect the upper resorts too much. Read more ...
