Niseko Now!

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 8:07am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The last couple of days in Niseko has seen cool tamps, cloud and plenty of rain. Today has dawned much the same although the temps have dropped considerably. Up in northern Hokkaido there has been snow to sea level this morning. A little precipitation should hit us a bit later this morning which should fall as snow almost down to village level.
Still heavy rain a couple of nights ago did do considerable damage to the sow at low levels and in Hirafu you can only ski out to the base now on a narrow strip of snow that's been built up by the groomers. With it's slightly higher base and better aspect the Annupuri side is much better off on the lower slopes.
Only a couple of weeks to go before then end of the season, here's hoping the weather clears again for a few more fine days before it's all over.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 240cm
Bottom - 15cm

Niseko Village:
No longer updating snow depth

Annupuri:
Top - 210cm
Bottom - 45cm

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 10:14am
Weather conditions: Snow (!), rain, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Would you believe it? Snow this morning at Kagura. It's rain once you get down to the Mitsumata area, so nothing to get too excited about - you're not going to need snorkels - but snow all the same and good to see that even in late April. Due to the weather conditons (including wind), only limited operations up there though it seems and very poor visibility again.

Lower down in Yuzawa town there is a lot of cloud around. It is a relatively chilly 8 degrees and rain falling. It looks like clearing up though all round and by later this morning the rain should be over.

Tomorrow looks set to be fine weather and warmer once again with a high of around 17 degrees on the forecast.

Mt Naeba:
90cm
Kagura Tashiro:
180cm

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 10:26am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud, fog
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The last few days things have got back to being quite cold with the temperature even venturing back down into minus territory. And, it is even trying to snow and actually snowing in the higher areas of Yokoteyama now and also over at Okushiga. We can't expect big snowfalls, and it seems likely to dry up as the day progresses. With the low cloud there is poor visibility out there.

In other news, the road linking Shiga Kogen with Kusatsu in Gunma (Route 292) is now open. During the winter the road is closed, meaning that you can only get to Shiga Kogen via Yamanouchi on the Nagano side but now that this road is open, you can also get to the area from Gunma side.

Mammoth - 1 lift
Ichinose Family - 2 lifts
Okushiga Kogen - 2 lifts
Kumanoyu - 2 lifts
Yokoteyama - 6 lifts
Shibutoge - 1 lift

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 10:45am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is light snow falling at the top of the mountain this morning. It's a chilly -1 degrees up there as well so a bit of a return to winter-like conditions. Just for a short time though as it is likely to clear up this afternoon making way for fine weather tomorrow and warmer temperatures once again.

For now though poor visibility on Yamabiko and cold blustery conditions. Yamabiko now reporting 110cm of snow, and still planning on being open until the end of Golden Week (6th May).   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 10:56am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well there was talk of snow and it has actually happened. There has been light snow falling at the top of Kagura and parts of Tashiro this morning. Come down a bit to Mitsumata and below (as well as in Naeba) and it is rain rather than snow. It's definitely much colder than it has been for a while though and heaters are once more out and on this morning.

Kagura started off the day with some lifts waiting on the weather but they are now fully open, including the No5 pair lift at the top.

This cold snap doesn't look set to last long though. Cloud is forecast for this afternoon and then fine weather tomorrow along with warmer temperatures once more.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 11:05am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As colder temperatures return to the region and rain in the village areas, news this morning that the Seki Onsen resort has now apparently closed for the season. They were planning on going on until May 10th, but that now does not seem to be happening. I just called the resort to make sure and the reports seem to be correct.

This leaves us with no ski resorts open today (and tomorrow) but Akakan are still apparently planning to open this coming weekend. They plan to be operating the Myoko Kogen Skycable as well as the Hotel No5 lift with the Hotel A Course open. The resort was saying that they will decide whether they can remain open after this weekend, though with Seki closing and a real lack of decent snowfall remaining, I would think it unlikley. Whatever, I'll bring you the news here.   Read more ...

Snow! Yes, evidence of fresh snowfall high up on the resorts this morning as temperatures fall right down once again and we are reminded of winter. Just a couple of cm or so up top, but enough to bring smiles to the faces of people venturing out today. Still cloudy and poor visibility higher up but breaks in the cloud down in the village.

Tomorrow the sun will probably be back warming things up to perhaps around 16 degrees.
