It's a lovely morning in the Niseko area, nice and calm but and mostly clear with blue skies and importantly that new delivery of 10-15cm of snow that I have just signed off on making it even lovelier. Lovely.
Perfect weather and probably conditions too for the start of the weekend. And the fine clearer weather looks like it's going to continue as well, though the downer of that (apart from the probably lack of fresh overnight deliveries) is that from early in the week it will probably be getting a bit milder than it has been with town temps. getting into positive numbers.
For now though, should be a really great day. Busy, but great. Have fun finding those untouched places!
Niseko Avalanche Report
Niseko base 6am: -9C, 12 hours snowfall 30cm of crystal snow, no development of snowdrifts. Moiwa 800m: N6m/s, 30cm, -9C, moderate development of snowdrifts overnight. Annupuri 1150m: N7m/s, -11C, development of snowdrift. Peak 1308m: NNW5.9m/s, -12.3℃. Hirafu 1000m: -8℃, 20cm of fresh snow. Coastal data: Benkei cape N11m/s, Kamui cape E5m/s, 1.7m waves, 1022hPa.
Isobars are largely spacing out, mild wind with no drastic development of snowdrifts. Accirding to snowfall transition and 5am observations, the general avalanche risk is low. The surface layer of new snow is getting heavier on top of Feb 13-15th layer, caution is still required in 1100m altitude slopes with heavy load of snowdrifts. Winter mountains are always hazardous, especially in this time of the season. Opening of gates 2, 3 and 6 will be delayed in order to minimize happy-go-lucky visitors. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Riding the anti-avalanche barriers along route 66 is dangerous. Parking on the road is prohibited. Beware of sudden weather changes and falling into cracks. The snow is in good condition.
Official snow depth numbers and lift news at time of writing:
It's a beautiful morning in Hakuba. Just a few small fluffy clouds here and there looking rather lonely but mostly clear blue skies.
No new snow being reported overnight.
Very cold overnight and I am told down to -14C here in the village, and as of 9am it is around -6C. With the sun out today from early on, it's forecast to warm up to around -1C. Let's keep it on the right size of zero. It's due to dip right down again overnight tonight and a similar pattern tomorrow. And perhaps Monday too. A warming trend looks set to continue into mnid week as well, but that's a few days off so we'll deal with that later.
For now though, fantastic weather conditions for the weekend and the snow should be good too.
Already looking pretty busy out there. Have fun, remember to take care.
Official snow depth numbers and operations (as of 22nd February 2014):
Hakuba Goryu: Reporting 0cm of new snowfall. Upper - 280cm Toomi - 180cm Iimori - 160cm
Hakuba 47: Reporting 0cm of new snowfall. Upper - 260cm Lower - 95cm
Mixed conditions this morning. The sun is out down here at base, but still quite a lot of cloud up top and it was snowing earlier on this morning. We seem to be sandwiched between areas this morning where it's still snowing (Yuzawa) and places to the west where there's brilliant blue sky (Hakuba) this morning.
Oh yes, the resort is reporting 18cm of fresh snowfall up on Yamabiko and up to 30cm on Uenodaira since yesterday morning as it was snowing for most of the day up there on the mountain, with not as much to show for it lower down by base - 5cm or so. Hikage area reporting 10cm.
Forecasts tell us to expect the sun and so I reckon it will probably clear up and leave us with a good fine day here, with similar due tomorrow too.
Hardly any snow forecast through into the middle of next week. Sun, clear and cloud is lined up. It's also due to get warmer as well mid week, perhaps a bit too warm for our liking.
The weekend should keep pretty cold though. Enjoy!
It didn't really stop snowing for long yesterday, though this morning we have around 10cm or so of fresh snow outside. Resorts in town seem to be reporting around that number, with Kagura coming up with 15-20cm.
It's still snowing as well at 9:30am, so not clearing up just yet here like in other neighbouring areas... perhaps later today, very probably by tomorrow.
Good that we are getting the fresh snow in though as once this clears up it'll the skies that should be clear. Clear and sunny and gradually warming up as well. Tuesday onwards the forecast is looking decidedly 'too warm' and well clear above the zero point.
That's next week though. For the moment it's very good conditions and should be a good weekend.
Temperatures remaining where they have been and about -6c now. Chance of light snow showers but I can't see it lasting for long even if it happens. Feels more like a day when the sun will win out. Similar conditions predicted for tomorrow too.
Actually, we're looking at the coming week without much sign of snow and it warming up a bit. Hopefully not a lot. I doubt the winter conditions are over yet, there'll surely be more coming up...

Shiga Kogen Now!
Saturday 22nd February 2014, 9:43am
Partly cloudy, lots of blue sky
The sun is out up here this morning. Lots of blue sky. Quite a few clouds too, but the blue and the sun are the main thing this morning.
Keeping quite cold though from tomorrow onwards it will be getting a bit warmer each day. By the middle of the coming week, we might even see some temps above zero. That's not what we want to see but hopefully it will be temporary and get back cold quick. We can't ignore the passing of time though as we reach late February. But when you think that some places are open in May, there's still a long way to go.
Right now though some fine snow conditions to enjoy. More people filtering in to Shiga Kogen now as happily there's no transportation problems this weekend like last week.
Official snow depth data, as of Saturday 22nd February 2014):
The day has started way more sunny than it should have: snow is falling to the north and east, and is supposed to be falling here as well.
But instead we have the blue skies extending in from Nagano City. Nice to see the mountains, actually...
Pretty good snowfall yesterday (none of which I have cleared, thanks to the missing/on-order drive belts for the snowthrower). Looks like we could get more later in the day, as the clouds are threatening to move in.
